This is another fantastic MUST SEE Frank Lloyd Wright home…read more After seeing this one, my fiance and I have decided that we will try our very best to go and tour all of Frank's houses. When you pull up to this house, there is a neighborhood that is built around it. Everything preserved though that is on the property, so no need to worry. Sadly, it was raining when we went, but we still were able to have a great experience. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and went quite in depth for each part of the house. I think the tour was about an hour or so. These types of houses are very interesting because while you are being told about how the room was built, how it was used or something else related to Frank or the house, you can truly picture yourself as a member of the family that lived in the house. The tour is so great I'd do it again! Photos attached are from online. No phones allowed so I left mine in the car. Only posting pictures from the outside. See for yourself for the inside!

Our guides were Harvey and Steve, who took us through every part of the house and answered all of our questions. Steve was a patient and knowledgeable guide, and Harvey provided a wealth of stories and anecdotes that added to our appreciation of the house. As an early Wright Usonian, Affleck is well worth a visit, especially in understanding how these houses and plans evolved over time.

It is like a small Greenfield Village, but smaller and way less expensive, except for the train, which is a bit pricey, but they ride is quite long. Not too many places for kids to eat during the field trip, so that was a downfall. I would have liked to have looked around the ice cream and treat area, sounded yummy. Most of the kids liked the train ride, but it was a bit long for the littles, they got bored. I enjoyed going around the area, it was fun for me. The kids then got to see a comedy magic show. They absolutely loved it, I have never heard small children laugh out loud so much, so please let the gentleman in the picture who performed know he now has many new fans. We were able to walk around about two small buildings before we had to leave, so I did not get to see much more. My child enjoyed our time there and would like to visit again. For me, it was fun, but I don't know if I need to come back except if my other child wants to check it out.

So they were inaccessible when I visited. The Petroglyphs were a small area, but there are acres and acres of beautiful trails, suitable for biking or walking. I brought my bike, but it was a bit muddy, so I walked it instead. Native Americans created this unusual artwork 300 to 1000 years ago while they participated in spiritual rituals designed to influence the events in the natural world. The petroglyphs are the remnants of the ancient Woodland tribes that once occupied this area. There are tons of interesting trees, that had faces and spirits to them. Took tons of pictures, and could really feel a presence in these woods. You won't get it unless you go. So do it.

Often, in modern life, we forget how rich the history of our state is...this park gives homage to the Native Americans of our state that is often overlooked within written history. The actual rock with all the engravings (the petroglyph? petroglyphs? its one rock, is it plural since there are more than one carving? whatever...) is protected under an overhead roof and high fencing. One can only see them if there are guides on duty, which was the case when I went. Honestly, its really hard to make out what is carved into the rock until you really look. It also helps if the guide on duty provides you with a "key" of images, so you can point what's what on the actual rock. Other than the actual petroglyphs, the park also offers beautiful trails for your walking pleasure. I didn't get to do too much exploring but I did enjoy a mini-hike on the trail that ran alongside a large stream. It was absolutely beautiful. This park is a great little treasure in the thumb region, make sure you stop when in the area....just make sure you go during petroglyph visiting hours so you can really take it all in!

Because I arrived early, I was able to park for free on the street a couple blocks away. The venue itself was very well maintained and very clean. Every staff person was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, it's fallen on some hard times over the years and has been open for events intermittently over the last few years. There is hope, however, for this beautiful old landmark to shine once again. There are plans for reinvestment into the Capitol Theatre, although over the years, there have been numerous stalled attempts at redevelopment and renewal. It's still gorgeous and the interior, while fading a little bit each passing year, still shows what this Art Deco era theatre was like back in its heyday. The Will Ferrell fllm, "Semi-Pro," was shot on location here about a decade ago. I have fond memories of going to a few concerts here before it closed when I was in high school. It was in a state of decline then, but it was still something to be seen. Shortly before it closed, there were attempts at improvements and renovations, and the Captiol Cafe (a cute little coffee shop) was open late nights upstairs, past the winding, spiral staircase. We used to hang out up there after shows on the weekend back when I was still in high school. Sadly missed. Any longtime Flint native should have some memories of the Captiol Theatre at some point.

I can't believe my sister has lived in Okemos for so long and never took me here before. If you want a glimpse as to what 19th century life was like in the Lansing area, then you need to come here and explore. It's open for tours by appointment only on Saturdays, but you can walk the grounds any day of the week. Here is a sampling of what you'll find: A Greek Revival-style farmhouse built between 1862-5. They know this because as historians were removing wallpaper they discovered newspapers that were used as insulation dated from those years. The farmhouse was relocated here from Marsh Road. Randall School, a one-room rural schoolhouse relocated from near Fowlerville. It cost $853.15 to build in 1883 and served 1st-8th graders. The Barnes House (1849), was the first frame house built in Okemos not using logs. The general store, and the log cabin from Haslett are both cool as well. My favorite thing to see though was the Tollgate House and the parts of the original wood planks from the toll road which travelers from Detroit took to get to the State Capitol in Lansing. A penny to cross is pretty damn cheap compared to the toll roads we drive these days! If you are in the area this is a great piece of Michigan history you don't want to pass by.
