The hem (2-3 layers) alone was $250, with the rest $50. When I asked, they said hems start at $150. Why not say that over the phone, then? Other bridesmaids paid around $60 for hems, so that price felt excessive. After a 10% discount and scaling back the work to bust, waist, and only one hem layer, I paid $211. The finished dress fit very well, and the seamstress actually hemmed all layers at no extra charge, which I appreciated. Turnaround was also fast (about 1-2 weeks). However, when I picked it up I noticed a large snag in the chiffon. The front desk said, "You already paid for it, so..." before taking it to the seamstress, which was concerning given their strict policies: full payment required BEFORE work begins, and NO fit adjustments without additional charges (unless a hem comes loose.) The seamstress fixed the snag, though. They were vague in their texts and commitment to providing a good result. I wanted to protect myself, so I asked "If I gain or lose 0 weight, it'll fit as pinned, correct?" And only then, did they give me an explicit "Yes." The policies are not customer friendly, their room for accountability was very limited, and the pricing was high compared to other shops, though the final workmanship and turnaround were good. The business might a fit for convenience/people who have money to lose. OR they are a small business that's been burned before and has now adopted broad policies and protections.

While I can't say that my visit to Asheville Cotton was the most fun I've ever had, I was just blown away by the sheer variety of fabrics they had. There are around a dozen tightly-packed aisles, each one with shelves simply jam-packed with different varieties of fabrics, all with different prints. I imagine it would be a quilter's dream. I've got no occasion to be inspecting or looking for fabric of any sort, but I still found myself ooh-ing and aah-ing at the sheer variety offered here. They also sell sewing and embroidery machines. I knew they could be expensive, but did you know that a full-featured sewing and embroidery machine for home use can run $12,000? Neither did I. The employees were very kind and helpful, and let you go about your browsing without tapping you on the shoulder every three minutes to ask if you need help finding something. Unfortunately I can't comment on the relative value of the place, as I have no frame of reference for what fabrics can or should cost. There were also a bunch of awesome quilts hanging around the place, which were part of a voting contest that we got to weigh in on as we checked out. They were taking votes for overall winner, as well as a subset of five quilts made by first-time quilters going for a type of "Rookie" award. It was a fun little way to finish up a shopping excursion I was dreading, but ended up secretly enjoying.

I don't recommend getting important garments tailored here. I enjoyed the shop and customer…read moreservice. And I'm sure the embroidery service is what they do best. As for getting our wedding dresses tailored, we did not receive what we were expecting. My dress just needed the hem shorted as I am average height. My fiancées need some more love, as the bust needed to fit better and the hem shorted. We got measured, paid, and left feeling confident in their expertise. Weeks pass and I'm feeling antsy, so I give them a call for an update. Turns out they were done and ready to be picked up. Once we picked them up and tried them on at home we noticed some issues- My dress now had padding in the bust (did not ask for) and the inner lining of the dresses hem was now longer then the outside. I was able to get into the dress to take the padding out with minimal damage. (given I have minimal sewing skills) But the messed up hem I will have to take to a different tailor. My Fiancées dress had two sets of padding added to it and did not fix the original issue. I removed both sets from the dress. And with my mom's sewing skills she helped it to sit flush to the skin. The hem was also not well done but was less noticeable under the outer layer of tulle. I did not have any extra time to bring the dresses back in to have them fixed. And with the experience we had, I did not feel confident that bringing them back in would fix them. Also with the possibility of getting charged again. I am not writing this to write this place off. They have other services that I'm sure they do a good job at. I am writing this to proceed with caution if you are looking for a tailor. It was definitely an interesting experience for us. And our day was special regardless.
