I tried Alchemy for the first time based on the overall advice of Yelpers. I was nervous about going here - I don't have a whole lot of confidence in trying new stylists - and am soured on those bad experiences with ones who never listened to anything I explained about my hair - but I had a really good experience at Alchemy. I was able to get an appointment the same week - with Holly. When I arrived I was greeted by the front desk associate. She offered me tea/water and the place (at the front area) kind of had a spa feel. Even the chair you sit in when you get the shampoo done - they recline fully and even massage. Once I was brought back to Holly's chair, she was open to hearing what I wanted and offered some ideas as well. She was extremely pleasant and friendly. She did a great job with the cut, and now, a couple months later, it has been growing out very well! The only negative for me was the fact that there was hair all around Holly's chair still on the floor from the prior cut when I was brought back. I would have appreciated a clean-up of the work-space so I wouldn't have felt like I was going through a hair cut assembly line. Regardless, Holly did a great job on my hair, the salon staff was all very friendly, nice atmosphere, and it was a reasonably priced haircut. I'm definitely going back! read more

I went from brown hair to blonde and Desiree did an amazing job. She is fun to talk to and very thorough and careful. The color was EXACTLY what I showed her in a picture and looks beautiful and natural. The haircut she gave me was good too- I just got long layers so nothing fancy, but she did well with that too. The products they use are paraben and phthalate free, which I love. One big downside- I had some issues booking the appointment. My original appointment was with a different girl who called in sick the day of. Understandable, and they called me in the morning to reschedule. But when I called the day of the rescheduled appointment to confirm, they didn't have me on their books. So I was rescheduled again. I didn't throw a fit- seems like some young and perhaps scatter-brained people are working at the desk. But it's the stylists who count! read more

I have gotten my hair cut by Jody twice and have been extremely happy. The first cut was the deva cut (I just wanted to try it out) & she did a phenomenal job. Took her time, there was clearly no rushing and she seems to really enjoy her job. However, the deva cut itself didn't result in anything too different from a regular cut and I will stick with just regular from now on. The last cut she gave me was a whole new style and it was gorgeous. I love it, it is perfect for my face and hair, & I have received tons and tons of compliments about how stylish it is :p I also purchase my hair products there and they were out of my conditioner for a bit. When I called to check if it had arrived, the girl on the phone told me to just come in and she would give me samples to tide me over. And DID she give me samples! It was enough to last 3 weeks & was just another indicator of their great customer service. It's clean, has a trendy little lay-out, they have snacks/beverages for the duration of your visit, and everyone I've met has been really nice. I highly recommend this salon! read more

I cannot recommend Alchemy enough. Desirea is absolutely delightful, and so incredibly talented. She spent HOURS (bleach, dye, and a cut) working on my hair, making it absolutely perfect. I just tried this place for the first time and went in for a full highlight and blow dry. Like most places now you have to pay for a blow dry with a color service. I came in with balayage highlights done about eight weeks prior and the tone was all wrong for my skin color (way to yellow/warm). I got matched with Kate, luckily, and she was a delight! Service: Kate took time during the consultation and seemed to really understand what I was asking for in regards to cooler tones of blonde. We chatted throughout the process about common interests and she had me pick a crystal from a bowl she keeps on her station and then gave me a free chair she got when she went to Starbucks and my color was processing. I adore her and I can't wait to go back..she was very thorough and mixed up samples for me when I left as well. Salon: the salon itself is not super special. They get points for carrying Oribe and using Olaplex in my book. The waiting area is nonexistent so hopefully I never have to spend much time up there. Receptionist did not offer coffee,tea, or water which is minor, but does set the tone. You can get cash back to tip which is also convenient. The shampoo chairs are reclining massage chairs and feel fantastic!! The place can get crowded and it's not very big! I will definitely be back to see Kate for color again and I will be eager to see her for a cut as well! read more

Since leaving NYC and my trusted, amazing stylist of 6 years, I've had a really hard time finding a stylist that can get my cut right. (I have fine, curly hair, lots of it, and I wear it short). Often the shape isn't great, or they don't account for the thickness of it, or it starts looking like a mullet within 4 weeks. I was in Silver Spring for a wedding last week and, struggling with yet another cut that didn't grow out well, decided to look on Yelp for a place nearby to see what could be done. I got an appointment with Taylor, and was extremely happy with her. As soon as I said I have problems with the mullet effect, she told me about some techniques she uses to help avoid that. I felt like she listened to what I wanted and what I didn't like about my current cut. She also told me everything she was doing as she did it, and asked me several times over the course of the cut how I felt about different aspects of it. She gave me a great cut that will grow out well. If I lived in the area I would definitely go back to Taylor. Having been to salons in New York that charge $100+ for a cut, I felt $58 was reasonable for that level of service. The shampoo massage (w/ massaging chair) was a treat. Also, as your short hair grows out, Alchemy offers free neck trims for regular clients--I wish all salons did that! I'm pretty much mimicking everyone else, but I have to give a shout out to Nikki. She did an AMAZING job. I have never gotten so many compliments on my hair, and that's really saying something considering I got something really dramatic, and Nikki had never seen me before. I also like the fact that they take tips on the credit card, since I never have cash with me! EDIT: After a second time back here, I'm an even bigger fan. Nikki is a true artist. And my appointment had to be bumped up after she was backlogged, but they comped my cut since I had to wait. That is customer service at its finest. I also feel like this is a welcoming atmosphere. They offer you tea and coffee, and the shampoo is SO luxurious. I guess if I had one complaint, it would be that she took a really long time to cut my hair -- but you can't rush perfection. 12/30/18 Update: I was contacted by the Salon and was given a refund for the curling set I received. I really appreciate the customer service. They were very kind and understanding. -------------------------------------- 12/23/18 I got a nice hair cut. The first time I've gotten a haircut I really liked in a long time. But, I wasn't as happy with the styling. I asked to have my hair blow dried and then styled with a curling iron rather than a flat iron. I was expecting to pay the same price as the website said a cut and styling would be, $70. But, curling the hair cost $45 more and I was not told until I went to pay at the register. Other salons I've been to did not increase the charge for curling and that specific service wasn't listed on their website either. Also, the curls didn't last. By the end of the day they got very loose and a little frizzy. I was expecting something way better for the amount I paid. read more

Upon recommendations of fellow Yelpers, I gave Alchemy a shot. I had previously fallen in love with a salon in downtown Silver Spring, but I was feeling lazy and wanted to find a place closer to home. I had to wait a while to get my hair washed, but the woman who washed my hair did a great job. The haircut itself was fine, though I'm not sure I love it yet. Jeremiah cut my hair. He was very professional at all times. I appreciated that he didn't try to engage me in small talk the whole time. (It's much more fun listening to what other people are talking about!) The hair cut was fine. Nothing super impressive, but then again I didn't ask for much--just a trim and thinning. Alchemy was a bit pricey ($70 for a cut), but there aren't many alternatives in the area. The place was clean, though few places could have used a dusting. Unless I find an alternative, I will be back. read more

I booked my first appointment with Julie today for a cut a color and appreciated the consultation I received from Julie. She not only listened and understood my vision for the color and look I wanted but also provided her thoughts and advice. In the end, we incorporated both of our ideas together. In the past, when I visited a salon, it is usually not to 'touch up' my current look, but to change my hair to a completely different look. Because my hair is usually over processed, this usually results in either my hair coming out darker than I wanted, or not light enough (being brassy even after toner). This particular experience was different than any experience in the past. We (hairdresser and I) were on the same page with what I wanted and I have never been satisfied with a salon experience. So I am new to the DMV, and since I moved out here I have not been to a salon (it's been 9 months now). My hair was becoming very brittle from me passing the blower and flat ironing my hair. it was TERRIBLE! I DESPERATELY needed a cut. So I found this place off of yelp. I must say, I am VERY pleased with my cut!! :) The hair stylist, Marianne, did an amazing job!! She did my hair EXACTLY as I pictured. And gave me tips on how to maintain my hair, which I very much needed because I barely know how to care for my hair lol. Anyways, she did amazing. And I do plan to go back in a couple of months, once the health is back in my hair, in order to color it :). read more

Living in the Silver Spring area, I've never really been able to find a local salon that provides what I believe to be are the 3 most important elements to finding a perfect salon....experienced professional stylists, a trendy relaxing ambiance and all at reasonable prices!! Just a few years ago I discovered Alchemy Salon and I have to say it captures the very essence that every salon should have. I have long hair, with medium curls...and LOTS of it, so it can be a bit high-maintenance at times. I usually go for the works....color, highlights, cuts and blowouts. Most of the time I'll wear my hair curly, but I do enjoy the occasional blowout; therefore it is really important to me that my highlights are never too thin for when my hair is curly, nor too thick for when my hair is straight. I can be a bit picky with my hair, but alas I have been able to find the perfect stylists...Nikki!!!!!!! Nikki provides great consultations.....she is patient and a diligent listener. She is very creative and always provides insightful tips when I ask for her suggestions. I have to say I LOVE MY HAIR every time Nikki does my hair. Oh....and an added bonus that Alchemy has, that adds to the relaxing ambiance, are the massage chairs at the wash bowls. The apprentice do a great job at giving scalp/head massages...it almost makes you want to take a nap in the chair :) Hope all gets the opportunity to try it out! read more

I'm very happy with my haircut, which its something I don't saw too often. I had gotten a really bad haircut about two months ago at a different salon and was looking for a fixer upper but not wanting it any shorter than it was already (shoulder length). Maryanne knowing this explained what she had planned and as she cut my hair she explained what she was doing and why. Before cutting she parted my hair as I usually do and told me she would style as I do so that I could see the ending result. This place is absolutely wonderful! It is by far my favorite salon. I had my hair done last year in a salon in Laurel and was was very disappointed with my service. So, after saving up money, I did some research which landed me at Alchemy. I had my color redone (balayage) and it turned out beautifully! It is exactly what I wanted. Brittney did my coloring--she is great! She is a Junior Stylist and made sure to check with a full stylist before getting started. I really liked that she pulled in someone for another opinion. Bianca cut my hair and she did a great job! We chatted about makeup and weddings the whole time, so I was in my element! She also did a great job suggesting products for me to keep my hair color intact and my curls looking soft and natural. I will be a customer of Alchemy Salon from now on! read more

I thought long hard about whether to write this. I don't generally make time for conflict, but this place needs their license examined. Not only that but If you scroll down you will see a review by a lady with red hair that pretty much encapsulates what happened to me. I literally had an identical experience, maybe slightly more odd. I have been going to Desiree for about 10 months after moving here from Philly. Usually she gives me the exact same haircut, I don't change very much. We added bangs once, that's about it. Just maintain the length, shape it up, We've done highlights and again they are just maintenances services from previous visits. This time I went in looking for red low lights on top of my brown hair. Red is a tough color to work with but since she had done my hair before I trusted her to do a decent job. So she decides that if she applies the red it will not work well with brown until she "pulls through my natural color. I am thinking this will be brown. Wrong, she choose black. She put a shoe polish black and then lowlight red on top. Well the problem is the red was not able to shine through the black. So I paid $150 for lowlights that couldn't be seen, and now my hair is black not brown. The salon has a policy that hair not satisfactorily done will be either refunded or corrected. I tried to live with the hair, but the black was too one dimensional and too dark for my face, it just washed me out completely. Mother's Day photos my hair looked like morticia. So I called the salon and asked if they could schedule a correction. The desk talks to desires (puts me on hold for a real time consult). She comes back and says "she'll schedule you for highlights to correct the old hair job." I arrive with my son and she is now suggesting toner which is temporary and not really permanent, but I ask what can I do to correct this. Well you can't put color on color and bleach is necessary and highlights are necessary but if I want to do this we have to start RIGHT NOW. I am like um ok well let's just try to fix this as I have an event to attend. So she races through the highlights which makes me nervous and she keeps saying: wow I rock! I did highlights in 30 minutes! Assistants are bringing trays of bleach hopefully the correct strength. Then she put me under the heat for "10 minutes" but I am looking at the clock and it I s 15 minutes then new people guide me to the shampoo bowl. Hair was not brushed when dry so now it is a tangled intensely. More toner and dyes being applied by assistants. Desirea is staying positive and then.... at the 2.45 hr mark her tone changes. Now she keeps looking at my scalp and trying to rub color out. Uh oh. Get to the chair now she is hostile as I mention it's...orange. She starts shouting at me "to be heard over the dryer." Which usually doesn't involve finger pointing and hostile tone. So I am now a bit upset as she is not apologizing for making a huge mess. She is angry I am not thanking her for "fitting me in." "She didn't have time for this. She had to reschedule another client." She literally looked like a character in the show "Shameless." Then she stops blow drying the hair as it is getting more and more orange. She then looks at me says: "You are acting like an authority figure, but you are not. (!) toner would fix this but you don't understand. We are not a good fit, get a refund and a new stylist." Here is the thing about aggressive people, if you don't fight back they think they are justified in yelling at you. If they were wrong you would yell back, right? But I have my 8 year old son there (no school that day) and we are in a public place. I won't be screaming like we are standing outside a trailer park. So....use at your own risk. POSTSCRIPT: I was wondering what to do as now my hair feels like straw from all of the bleach. I put a deep conditioning treatment from Oribe. And the color starts to WASH OUT in the shower! It is running in my hand like rusty water. I thought maybe this will help. I kept washing it and it kept RUNNING. I found color correction specialists online and when I went there, it ran in their shampoo bowl too. They said that the bleach had been left in too long Edited to respond to the management comment below: the hair salon I went to afterwards corrected the color in 1.5hours. Got me to the exact *exact* color. It does NOT take multiple visits. It takes a knowledgeable colorist with an understanding of chemistry. read more

I am really, really surprised that I don't see Medinah's name in these reviews... She is AMAZING!! I came in yesterday for a cut and highlights, and let me start by saying that I have been doing my hair with the same person for 15 years, so I was a bit skeptical coming in... Medinah took me in, asked me what I wanted, and the rest was like magic. Initially, they had mistakenly booked me for partial highlights instead of full, but she quickly shuffled things around and was able to accommodate me. She took her time with me, which I really, really appreciated. I have a lot of very thick hair, so my highlights took several hours and after the toner and wash, I was the last person in the salon. Still, she continued to take her time, making sure the color and cut were perfect and finishing it off with an awesome blow dry. She even offered to let me come in for a touch up if I wanted to brighten up the color a bit. Five stars for her skills and service!! The salon itself is also really nice, modern, and clean. They have these reclining massage chair washing stations that are incredible. I will DEFINITELY be back to see Medinah! read more

The only place I trust with my long locks, Alchemy Salon is a hip and chic spot for all of your haircare needs. My stylist's name is Gwen and I adore her style, personality, and skill. Her haircuts last me a long time and she is precise! She always makes sure to listen to my cut preferences and sticks to it. There have been times that I have been to other salons in the past and when I have specified that I wanted only about 1inch-2 inches trimmed off, they stylist ends up going to town on my hair and I end up with a unwanted chop. I hardly ever have to wait for my appointment which is great. I love the deluxe massage chairs as I get my hair shampooed-the challenge is to not fall asleep while you are getting your head massaged. The salon is clean, and the atmosphere is very friendly and alive with good music. I love checking out their array of the latest hair products/tools. I love recommending this salon to my friends and colleagues because I know they will be in fantastic hands. The compliments on my hair are endless. The price for a cut is a bit on the expensive side considering you also have to account for a tip for both stylist/shampoo technician but again, my haircuts last a long time so it's a fair investment. read more

I have been searching for a solid salon to go to since my last hairdresser quit her job. After reading reviews on yelp - I decided to give Alchemy salon a try and I am completely satisfied. I called the morning of to schedule an appointment and they were nice enough to squeeze me in for the afternoon. I got my haircut with Jody - who is extremely talented and personable. Prior to any cutting she gave me an consultation and asked what I wanted. I told her I wanted to keep the length and add lots of layers and Jody executed exactly what I asked for. Did I mention the hair wash? Amazing! The lady that washed my hair did a wonderful job and threw in an awesome head massage while she was at it. I look forward to returning! My hair is a bit complicated and I'm really bad at doing my hair but they always figure out a way. I do wish they'd carry cruelty free hair care products but that's for another day. I have been going to Alchemy for about a year now and could not be happier. I moved from Upstate NY to the DC area last August and was very concerned about finding a salon and more specifically a hair stylist that would match up to the girl I had been seeing for 12 years. I was lucky to find Johnnie at Alchemy. The Salon itself is very clean, well lit and all of the staff is very friendly. I tried to make a reservation first at Chaos in Bethesda and they wanted my credit card number with my reservation so they could charge me in case I canceled. I was shocked. Extreme pet peeve to give my credit card when I have not even gotten any service from the Chaos salon. I went back and looked around Yelp for someone new. I went to Alchemy to get my hair cut after reading many reviews on yelp. I tried out a new hair stylist who was new to the floor Mary Anne after completing her 3 years of training. She is young, upbeat, and loves her job. She did a great job on my hair. I have a punk cut and she made some slight changes to it that made it sit better. Because of Mary Anne's possitive youthful attitude I would recommend her with teenagers who are fussy about their hair. She could easily relate to children and teenagers and would be a great stylist to this group as well. I am extremely pleased with my new haircut and plan to continue to use her and the salon in the future. They have a massage to your scalp when they shampoo and nice massage chairs. They also had some cookies and water laid out to sample. Very nice, clean upbeat place. Loved what they did with my hair. read more

Absolute best salon experience all around. The massage chair and *amazing* hair wash was, well, amazing! Not to mention the amazing end result of my cut! Dan is seriously great. He's friendly, made conversation with me, and did such a great job on cutting my hair after showing him a picture of what I wanted. Everyone is super friendly and willing to help in any way. I loved the hair products that they used so much that I bought some! They even have a return policy, which I have never heard of at a salon! Got a very nice haircut and a fairly reasonable price (about $50 plus tip) - my hair is long, wavy and pretty hard to screw it up. I am more about the salon experience. It was nice, had a salon feel, but I didnt walk away feeling like I was committed to it. I was there on a busy day so it was really loud and felt chaotic. I would say that this is probably the best within the downtown SS / Four Corners area, but it would be fun to have more options to pick and choose from in our area. From my actual experience that particular day, I would give it a 3 star experience, but it looks like they have potential for a 4, which is how I rated it. I will give it a try again and hope for that 4. read more

I enjoyed my first trip the salon a month ago. My stylist was friendly and understood my needs. My hair is simple and I expect that a stylist should suggest the best cuts for one's hair/face and that's exactly what she did. To begin, I entered the salon, which is located in a small shopping center and was warmly greeted and offered fresh beverages and a light snack. I was asked to put a wrap robe on, to protect my clothing/skin. I then met my stylist and then went and enjoyed a wonderful shampoo head massage...and I really do mean wonderful! Say it ain't so. Things are falling apart. I get a call the day of my appt saying they made a mistake and that my stylist was not available that day nor any day in the next two weeks--she was all booked up. Then how come they called me the day before my appt and confirmed my appt for the next day? They set me up with another stylist since I could not wait two weeks. The cut sucks--there is no shape and I have fly aways galore. I kept waiting for it to grow in, to look better, but it never did. I normally get my haircut every six months, now I will end up getting it cut, somewhere else, after only 1 month to try to get some shape back to it. read more

I loved my experience at Alchemy Salon. I've always wanted to dye my hair, but since it's very dark (black, basically), I wanted a professional to take the first stab at it. Desirea was absolutely delightful - she talked me through a couple of different options and was super honest about what could and shouldn't be done to my hair (I want it dyed, not falling off my scalp!). In the end, I decided on a lovely deep purple with highlights which took Desirea a solid 3-4 hours to complete. She took a LOT of time and care with it and it paid off! I was super happy with it and got lots of compliment to boot. I came back in 5-6 weeks later to get some toner and she did an awesome job with that too. YAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSS!!! Every bit of my experience at Alchemy was awesome today. I got my hair washed by Khadija. It was so relaxing. The wash chair automatically leaned back and propped my feet up. It was like the la-z-boy of wash chairs. And it had a back massage function! Khadija gave me the best scalp massage I think I've ever gotten. Then, she sat me down and detangled my hair. Now, I have very curly hair that loves to twist around itself and make these gnarly knots. So I was ready for some serious yanking...nope. She detangled my hair so quickly and easily. I was like...wth? Can you teach me that so I can do it at home? Then, Nikki came over and cut my hair. Her consultation and analysis was right on point. I thought I knew my hair better than anyone, but she really understood it right off the bat. I told her everything I wanted and she delivered. It was a little shorter than I initially intended, but I LOVE IT! I mean, it is just perfect and so out of my comfort zone. I really needed a cut like this. Then, we proceeded to the blow out. She had someone come over and help. I could tell her helper wasn't as skilled as she was, but it still came out really great. My hair is soft, bouncy and shiny. And I don't look like I have helmet head. I'm used to the Dominican blow outs. And this one was pretty darn close. Nikki's also super friendly and I actually enjoyed talking to her (usually I just want to zone out in the chair). Then, at the end, I got a free $10 gift card for my next visit because it was my first time at the salon. I'm definitely using it for coloring. I've been going to Alchemy for 5+ years, so it's probably time that I write a review. Desirea has been my stylist since day 1. I'm extremely picky about my hair and Desirea never disappoints. She listens, responds thoughtfully and (MOST importantly), doesn't tell me something that I want to hear, but instead tells me what I NEED to hear. The LAST thing I need is a stylist lying to me just to hurry me along so they can get their next appointment in their chair. There have been plenty of times where I have gone in there asking for something crazy and she gently explained that what I wanted wasn't going to work for my hair type and/or color. This girl knows her stuff. I have mousy brown boring hair and she's always made it look fantastic. Even when I came in with my dark hair with purple highlights, and asked for blonde, she explained the entire process, that it would take a couple times (which it did - 3 times to be exact), and STILL made it look amazing. I chose this salon based on others' Yelp reviews. I went on a Sunday and it wasn't crowded at all; the stylists took their time and the whole thing felt very relaxed. I went to Shideh -- for no particular reason other than she was available during the time I wanted to make an appointment -- and she was lovely. She was really informative while cutting/styling my hair, and gave me tips on how to manage my new haircut and keep it looking nice. She wasn't all business though, she chatted with me about work/restaurants/etc. and just generally made me feel really relaxed during my appointment. (I consider this a huge bonus on her part, because I'm always stressed out during hair appointments as I hate getting my hair cut!) I'm really pleased with the way she did my hair and will definitely be going back to Shideh. It was a bit pricey -- $70 for a wash and cut, plus I left $14 for a tip -- but haircuts are one of those things I won't skimp on, and the service here made the price worth it. The only person in the world I let color my hair is Shereen! After moving out of the area, I couldn't bear the thought of losing my colorist. I've been coming down from New York City to see her for almost five years now - and there is absolutely no one that compares to her. I've seen her do everything from modern to classic styles, and every time I've left the salon BEAMING. She is a true master of her craft who somehow always knows exactly what I want. My current style is long and blonde - let me tell you, no one is able to do blonde color like Shereen! My golden locks are brighter, yet still natural looking, and I NEVER have to worry about looking like a bottled blonde. I've gotten so many compliments on my color throughout the years, I wouldn't consider looking anywhere else for a stylist (even despite the four hour drive!). I've followed Shereen from several salons and I couldn't be happier with Alchemy. They only use the best products and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I always go to Shareen. She makes my hair look alive again. I typically go months without cuts or colors, and when it is long and needs to be revived, I visit her. I've been following her around for years because, as a brunette, it is hard to find someone to do color and highlights that don't look orange, thick, or cheap. She has never steared me wrong and it always looks great. I also get her to darken my hair and she does a great job of changing it for me. Overall, I really like the salon as well. I like the vibe, the shampoo person always gives an amazing head massage. I also like the product they use. read more

Alchemy is a great salon. The atmosphere is pleasant and they have great customer service across the board. I booked an appointment with Brittany, one of the Junior stylists. I was absolutely exhausted and she was very patient with me despite my crankiness. She's knowledgeable and helped me to figure out what I really wanted. She good at providing options and explaining things. She fixed my roots/gray hair/brassy highlight situation-thank God! She also gave me a blow out and trimmed my bangs. My new look was so bouncy, shiny, and polished! I swear my haircut/style makes me look younger!
