It was a cozy spot to curl up with a book in a big chair or on the couch at the end of an adventurous day. Our room was great! The Bear Room lived up to its name, with decor from quilts to shower curtains, and even drawer handles, with bears. Leslie was super accommodating of our veggie dietary request and made hearty and tasty breakfasts to get us started each day.

This bed and breakfast is literally right on the beach and we enjoyed beach combing and even had a bonfire one evening. The main common room features many comfy recliners from which to enjoy the gorgeous views of the channel, wildlife (we saw seals and bald eagles) and mountains. The breakfasts were fantastic (think fresh fruit, cinnamon rolls, french toast, eggs, sausage, juice, fresh coffee, just to name a few)! Leslie also saw to the small details such as ample hangers in the closet, drawer space and locally made hand soaps to use in the bathroom. We were very appreciative of the comfortable and clean beds and bedding and our attractive room with a decorative Alaska feel. The only down side is that its about a two mile walk to town and hiking trails so if you are bringing children, transportation is a must or you can use the local taxi service. As another possible option, a local business and restaurant we frequented during our stay were kind enough to pick us up and drop us off. Just to give an example of how Leslie goes the extra mile, she dropped us off at the airport and must have gone back to the B & B and found a pair of pants I had forgotten because she drove all the way back to the airport and gave my pants to another passenger who in turn, gave them to me. There was narration along the way by Sylvia, the owner. She pointed out an eagle's nest and spoke about eagles. We stopped by an area with harbor seals and learned about them. The best part was that we could stay at Anan Bear Observatory as long as we wanted. There was a group who left earlier, so she took them back to their anchorage in Berg Bay and came back for the 5 of us that were still enjoying our time. When the pink salmon are in full migration upriver, it is a bear viewing extravaganza. We left at 9 and were returned to our marina by 5. We got our money's worth! Another tour company returns by 2 pm, which only gives you 1 1/2 hours of viewing. Watch what you purchase!

Best to check the website (www.alaskabearfest.org), or schedules printed in the paper and posted around town. There's plenty to do in Wrangell if you decide to make the trip up - and we highly recommend you do. This is a town that hasn't sold out to the cruise companies and the tourism machine. Bearfest is a reason for them to show off the real Alaska and what is arguably the friendliest town we've ever visited in America.
