You have to pay for your rental before leaving so by the time you come back, you drop it off and it was a very smooth process. The bikes are very well kept, and there is a number on the bike in case you do have any questions or something Has happened then we were given a pretty good easy trail to do in the amount of time that we paid for. I definitely recommend it. It's an easy process and I have absolutely no complaints about this place.

The additional parking lot was totally new to me. I recommend skipping the main lot and parking there. I ended up having to leave my eldest two on a rock, so I could grab the car in the main lot and pick them up. They were so done with me! haha I pushed my toddler in a City Mini GT (all-terrain stroller) the entire time. I like to hike, but I've yet to invest in those fancy backpack toddler holders (see, I don't even know what they're called). It was my goal for us make it to the infamous bridge and back. We did it. I'm so damn grateful. I don't have a dog, a gun or bear spray (yet). I depend on a simple bear bell, my super loud Bluetooth speaker, and the protection of my ancestors, angels, and spirit guides. Luckily, we saw other hikers often. We were never alone for too long. Still lots of snow melting. The trail was still very wet and muddy in some spots. We did not have waterproof boots so naturally we left soaked from the calves down. It was worth it. Highly recommend.

It starts at the Glen Alps trailhead. (same as the most popular hike in Alaska, Flattop: https://www.yelp.com/biz/flattop-mountain-trail-anchorage-2) The Powerline Pass trail itself goes all the way to the actual Powerline Pass (the big mountain on your left/north is Avalanche Mountain https://www.yelp.com/biz/powerline-pass-trail-anchorage, the one on your right/south is Homicide Peak) and then goes south, towards the Turnagain Arm and ends at the Indian Trail Valley Trail (https://www.yelp.com/biz/indian-valley-trail-anchorage). There are also various offshoots including (from Glen Alps): Williwaw Lakes Trail (https://www.yelp.com/biz/williwaw-lakes-trail-anchorage): at about 0.5 mile, take a left, then take a left at the fork in about a mile. O'Malley Trail (https://www.yelp.com/biz/o-malley-peak-trail-anchorage): same as above, but take a right at the fork Hidden Lake Trail: at about 4ish miles in, take a left Great place to use as a hub. If you just want to get out of the city and move your legs, this is a great trail to do a mile or two on. Doing it as a trail in and of itself, it's a little boring on foot. The real thrill of this trail is doing it on a mountain(or fat) bike or skis.

We did the Summer Valley & Forest Hike on Sep 4 with our guide, Bryce, and two other hikers. This…read morewas an easy hike for us - largely flat, and beautiful throughout. Being new to Alaska, we didn't feel comfortable doing any hikes on our own, and Bryce was a fantastic guide. He was on time for our pickup, friendly and informative throughout the drive to the trail head, and best of all, he stopped the van along the way for a surprise moose sighting in a lake by the highway. We were able to capture some great photos and videos of the moose grazing in the lake, from a close but safe vantage point, and without feeling rushed. Then the hike itself was great - again, beautiful throughout, and Bryce had great knowledge of the plants and area. He stopped a number of times to bring our attention to plants and mushrooms that are important or unique to the area and gave us time to admire the views at various stops (among them a stunning waterfall). Be sure to bring water and snacks for the hike, as it's long enough that we got a bit hungry. Go Hike Alaska has many offerings; this was the only one we did during our short Anchorage stay, but given our experience, we'll definitely seek them out again when back in the beautiful state.

As a city trail, it's one of the best. There is lots of tree cover, and "babbling brooks" frequently interweave with it. As a hiking trail, it's kind of a snooze. You *might* see a moose, but you probably won't see a bear. There aren't really any mountain vistas, either. It's a great trail to walk your dog after work or to go for a quick run, though.

They were a little varied (some have zippers so you can stow your gear inside. Some have pop off skirts, and some have velcro skirts. That means the grade (steepness) is much more gradual and, to many folks, it "feels" less steep. The trail starts out low and in the brush. In my opinion, this is the scariest part. Why? Well, you never have to scramble up rocks and use your hands on this trial, but that's not why. The why is simple: BEARS. I definitely recommend hiking with friends, or being loud, or taking bear spray, or all of the above. The lower parts of the trail have many blind-turns and overgrown areas where you could surprise Ballou. Soon you'll leave the brush though, and take a gentle cruise to the summit of Wolverine. The views from the top, looking east (away from Anchorage) are pretty incredible.

Hiking Wolverine Peak was my first activity in Alaska and it left me sore for the rest of the week…read more However, the climb as well as the views made it all worthwhile. The hike is well known locally and is about 10 miles round trip. It can be strenuous as Wolverine Peak is 4500 feet above sea level and most of the hike is straight uphill. The first 2 miles aren't too bad but the trail gets narrower and steeper as you go along so I was huffing and puffing halfway into it. You have to make your way carefully in certain parts where the trail gets narrow cuz there's this plant called Cow's Parsnip (I think that's what it's called) and something on the flower reacts to sunlight so if you brush up on the flower and it gets sunny, you will have very nasty blistering sores. Be careful! Throughout the hike the guide stopped periodically so that I could check out the scenery and the wildlife. There was a moose and her calf.. and we picked wild blueberries on the trail for a little snack. And the views of the peaks and valleys were so lovely. Just really hard to describe... Take lots of water and a nice lunch to enjoy at the top. A great way to spend the day.

The hubs needed to cross his 50th state off the bucket list, so we found ourselves planning a…read moresummer trip to Alaska. It was our first visit and was made even more memorable with a perfect July riding day thanks in great part to AMA. In the weeks leading up to our trip, Nancy was very helpful via email. We arrived on a Monday morning and Keith had everything ready, explained all the legalities, and walked us through the bikes. The lawyer in me appreciated his thoroughness with regard to laws and safety, and the tourist in me appreciated his friendly banter and route suggestions. The hubs and I took the 12GS Rallye (AMA's "flagship" bike) down to the Kenai Penninsula with one of his college buddies, who rode the smaller 650GS. AMA provided the helmets and jackets and they had a good variety of both (I brought my own helmet and jacket because they fit perfectly and I rarely get to wear them, but I would have been fine had I left them at home). We provided our own gloves. For most of the trip, the summer weight gloves were great, but later in the day, it was nice to have the winter weight for the cooler temps and crosswinds. AMA also provided us an aluminum pannier for the back of the bike, which was excellent as a backrest for me and also held all of our gear including a tire-repair kit provided by Keith. Our buddy's 650 was equipped with side panniers. We had no issues with the bikes whatsoever. We stopped for breakfast in Girdwood, checked out some bald eagles on the road to Seward, found a rocky beach in Hope, and ate fresh crab and halibut in Seward. At one point on the ride home, our buddy was dive-bombed by a bald eagle, which was one of the hilarious highlights of the trip. It was nice to keep the bikes overnight because we lost track of time under the midnight sun with our many sightseeing side trips to check out the local shops and eateries. There was also a little construction, which let us really slow down and take in the beautiful scenery. The beemer was comfy and solid as one would expect. Next time we are definitely doing a full week!
