I took a piece in to be tested for authenticity. This jewelry item came with a certificate of authenticity. I was verifying. The jeweler doing the testing used a device on each diamond and stated that at least one gemstone was not natural. Upon having the item re-tested elsewhere, I was told that the diamonds were authentic and real. Two jewelers indicated the piece authentic. Alara did not. The other jewelers provided this explanation: if a jeweler is using a lower end tester for diamonds, the way those work, is that they test for light refraction and can confuse natural diamonds that may have some fluoresce with lab created diamonds. read more

Unfortunately, my family's experience with this retailer was not the experience the prior reviewer had. My daughter had a necklace custom made there(design drawn by my daughter). It was not an elaborate piece, but for whatever reason took an unreasonably long time to finish. While not a huge deal, the rude and aloof attitude projected by the owner when I stopped in to pick the piece up for my daughter, did not make me feel warm and fuzzy. In addition, on another visit, my daughter saw some earrings that she liked very much in the store, but went away without purchasing them. Later, she went back to buy them but they had been sold. The owner of the store informed her that they "would probably not be getting anymore of those earrings in because the minimum purchase amount for wholesalers was too high." My daughter then said that if they DID ever get them again she would love to be told. She left her name and number in hopes that they'd maybe call her. In fact, she stopped by a second time to see if MAYBE they'd gotten them in and had forgotten to contact her. Instead, she was told that, no, that had not received any of the earrings. IN FACT, they did NOT have her name and number on a list to call. Frustrated, but still interested, she AGAIN left her name and number a second time. Fast forward several weeks later...my daughter is window shopping in downtown Bozeman. When what to her wandering eyes did appear? The very earrings she'd been waiting to be called on. Guess what? She did not go in and purchase them. When a business clearly doesn't NEED any business, why give it to them? This family and extended family will patronize other jewelers who want to provide quality service to the customer. This store has beautiful merchandise. I like the dog there. The jewerly is stylish, for now, in 10 years it won't be. I walked in wearing sweats, sneakers and a hoodie. I was still sporting over 3 carats of diamonds in my ears, and on my hands. Yet, I was treated like a homeless. They asked me not to touch the glass when I pointed to a piece. I was not overly impressed with the service, but I was not put off as strongly as many of the other reviewers. However, I will not be going back to Alara after an experience I had there a few months ago. I went into to look at buying something special for myself, I found something that I really liked and told the sales associate that I really liked the piece but would have to think about it. When I stopped in the next day to purchase the necklace another employee informed me that it had been purchased by one of her co-workers! In fact, it turned out to be the one that I had dealt with. Sneaky sneaky... I don't blame her for buying the necklace for herself, it was beautiful! It just seemed tacky and a bad business practice. I walked in hoping to find a delicate gold wedding band similar to my great grandmother's. The owner greeted me and when I told her what I was looking for, she said it wasn't worth it to carry something like that in her store. She proceeded to show me a couple of pieces that weren't even close to what I was looking for. Finally I said that I would just have someone make it for me. Her reply was something along the lines of how she is the only European trained jeweler in the tri-state area and if anyone should make it, she should. Now- if you immediately tell me something I'm looking for isn't worth the time and money to have in the store, why would I have you make it for me? Especially when I'm treated rudely by you. While the jewelry in this store is beautiful, the owner left a bad taste in my mouth and I will not be returning. read more

The WORST jeweler ever. First off, Babs sized me wrong for my engagement ring, which was stainless steel and not resizable. I took it back to her because it was falling off...her solution was to paint some clear nail polish on the inside!!! Are you kidding me?!? She would not give a refund, but talked me into letting her make me a custom one herself...which is a complete piece of garbage. I showed her how bad it looked after a few weeks, she blamed me for wearing it while I do dishes. Wanted me to leave it with her for 3 weeks for some reason. I said no and bought a new ring from another local retailer. I also have two necklaces made by her that I can't wear because the stones are loose...on both! This woman does not make quality jewelry. My fiance got my engagement ring here because I love the artists and the jewelry they carry. However, I agree with the other reviews and want people to know how crappy it is to shop here. The owner is aggressive and extremely snobby. I went in with some friends last week to peruse and en employee followed us around like we were going to steal something. Additionally, she was not at all pleasant. My biggest issue with this store, however, is that buying an engagement ring and going through that process is supposed to be a pleasant experience. As much as I love my ring, I have hated dealing with Alara. After giving them my ring to send off ot be re-seized, I got no call about my ring for weeks. They claimed they would update me, but I heard nothing for 3 weeks. Finally we called (3rd time) to get some answers. They had not bothered to check in with the artist until this point to see what was going on. They made no effort to be helpful or kind, which has sadly put a damper on my engagement experience. Would have loved to buy a matching band from the same designer but I don't trust Alara to do that. Anyway, we will see what happens with the re-sizing of my ring this week. 5 weeks after taking it in... Bottom line: Dang, they are not good. read more

Given the rough reviews on here and the great experience I had with Alara's staff and products, I felt it necessary to leave some feedback on here for others to see (I normally don't go in for reviews much since I feel like they skew towards subsets of the population that aren't truly representative -- like, cranky people, or people who enjoy typing long reviews out in their free time...). Let it be said first that I was thoroughly satisfied with the gorgeous, unique ring I purchased on a trip through Bozeman; later, when an issue with it came up, I went to the staff for resolution even though I did some research and realized that I was asking for what essentially amounted to special treatment. They were exceptionally friendly, responsive, and beyond fair to the point of perhaps being best described as generous -- including Babs, the owner. So, the next time I am in Bozeman I am going right back to check them out. I really feel their customer service is as good as it gets! read more

Avoid this business. The inordinately rude sales associates and their unbelievably naive, even imbecilic sales strategies are some of the worst I've ever experienced, literally anywhere in the world. Their ' locals only ' sale, which required ID, not only caused them to lose my business but that of another customer while I watched. I would not give this shop your business. We bought an engagement ring here in 2012 & came back this year to have it 'inspected'. We brought it into the shop & gave it to one of the employees, who walked it over to the owner to look at--I guess we were not important enough for her to come over & talk to us ourselves 10 feet away, so we listened to her tell her employee to tell us that the diamond was loose, but that we should wait until it "gets worse" before they would do anything about it. Hmmm..."gets worse"? Should I have waited until the diamond fell out before bringing it back?...we left & came back 2 days later, deciding that we would like it fixed now. The other employee I spoke with this time told me "if the diamond gets loose like this, I would just put it in a plastic bag & send it back"...????...the exact opposite of what we were told 2 days prior & no clarification from the shop owner, who was again, standing not more than 10 feet away. It was sent back to us without the brushed finish we had left it with, so we had to send it back again! When they sent the finished ring back, there was no apology for the trouble & it was sent to us, both times, without insurance--no signature required, so it was just sitting in our mailbox! They do BAD business here and the owner gives of an uncomfortable air of arrogance you can feel through the shop. So disappointed we gave them our business in the first place. read more
