I'll be blunt: Dr. Failor and I did not see eye to eye. In fact, he didn't listen to me at all. I waited ten weeks for an appointment with him and when I got there, he hadn't read a single word about me; he didn't even know my first name when he walked into the exam room where I'd been (somewhat) patiently waiting for him for thirty-five minutes (he was running 45 minutes late and I was on time). So he spent 10 minutes of our 12-minute appointment reading and scribbling on the lab results and notes that were sent by my regular doctor. Then he spent 2 minutes peppering me with questions, felt my neck for about 10 seconds (I was not there for thyroid!), said, I need to pull some more bloods on you but I don't think there's anything wrong with you, and then left. WTF? Whatever happened to? - bedside manner - taking a complete medical history - reading the notes BEFORE the appointment - looking at me when you're talking to me - educating the patient - common decency He was so rude. They pulled more bloods on me (the same ones I'd had done a week before the appointment, and which were in a lab report under the first one -- he didn't look at them) and the hormone levels were still low but they called me back from his office and said they were normal. Needless to say, I got a second opinion, and that doctor diagnosed low hormone levels and came up with a treatment plan that involved several hormone gels -- and which worked, according to lab reports AND my subjective sense of how I felt. Dr. Failor had been given rave reviews by others I knew, including the doctor who referred me to him, but to me, he was just an ass. Maybe he was having a terrible, terrible day, but having billed my insurance company $400 for that 12-minute visit (that's $2000 an hour, more than my plastic surgeon makes when he's doing intricate surgery!), I think he needs to leave it at the door and deliver excellent care. read more

Beware of this doctor. He falsely diagnosed me as having Graves disease and wanted me to take Polythiouracil med (PTU).... when I was pregnant! I refused, because this med can cause Dwarfism and Cretinism in your baby. I went to a new Endocrinologist/doctor, and we did FNA (fine needle aspiration) and determined I had a benign thyroid tumor, which we surgically removed AFTER my baby was born, a very healthy boy. My OB/Gyn even called him and chewed him out. I'm thankful I elected to get a second opinion and was shocked at Alan Failor's irresponsible and callous misdiagnosis. Worst endo ever. Does not return phone calls, does not talk with patients directly, does not listen to them. (Julia Z: I completely feel you. I hope you found a better doctor.) The last straw was trying to get in touch about an issue I was having and I had to communicate with him through his nurses who would then have to email him, wait for a reply from him, then call me back. It was ridiculous. I'd be better off asking some random dude on the bus for endo insight than to try and talk with this doctor. Please note: Once you *are* talking with him one on one at an appointment, he will condescend to no end and will not listen to you. I'm shocked to see poor reviews as well. Dr. Failor is an amazing doctor and has excellent bedside manner. I've seen him for 3 years now at SCCA. I've been through my share of Endocrinologists and have zero plans to ever stop seeing Dr. Failor. In all honesty, if he were to retire, I would cry! I have several friends who are physicians and say he's the doctor to the doctors. You can't go wrong with that feedback. read more

My encounter with dr was pathetic! He behaved like he was tranquillized, would not look me in the eye but, looked right through me as if he were drugged. He behaved very passively at first, did not help organize the visit at all, was evasive when asked direct questions repeatedly, was outright mean spirited in reaction to comments I made about my condition and provided no useful help or direction as to where I might look for proper medical care. I'm seeing dr Failor for about one year , I just love him , he's a brilliant doctor to me, I find him careful, thoughtful,smart , and can't describe how much I appreciate him , but guys you really shocked me with such bad thoughts about him . He everytime calls me, replies me to every email even in the early mornings, I feel like he cares a lot about me , maybe just because I'm 23 years old and I'm a stranger here in the US and have a rare disease and maybe that's what he treats me like that , but anyway I find him to be a brilliant doctor . I'm just concerned about what you were talking about that he's incompetent and I decided to undergoing a surgery that definitely changed my life ( BLA) and that's because he advised me to do that and now I'm worried if he s the right doctor I was listening to . I was surprised to see negative reviews on here for Dr. Failor. I have been a patient of his for close to four years and I nothing but good things to say about him. He is thorough. He is kind. He asks questions and doesn't just give his opinion. He's really just a kind person overall, but more importantly he's an excellent doctor. As someone who's had a lot of doctors, I'm familiar with the time crunch most of them face. They have x many patients to see in x amount of time. They have to keep things moving, so if you're someone who wants to go on about your personal problems, you may feel rushed or mistreated. Dr. Failor is a top notch doctor who makes the most of the time he's given. I feel very blessed to have crossed paths with him for my health is in a better place because of his time, expertise and care. read more

I have had a completely positive experience with Dr. Failor. I've been seeing him several times a year at the UWMC for almost five years. He's one of the best doctors I've ever had. I was referred to him by a local endocrinologist who wanted to ensure that I had the best possible diagnosis and care when it became clear that my case was complicated. I have found Dr. Failor to be consistently friendly, professional, and thorough. He always remembers personal details about my life that might have an impact on treatment. He never makes me feel rushed when answering my questions, and he always makes sure that I have opportunity to raise any questions or concerns. This was especially true when I first came to him, because the diagnosis indicated the likelihood of a very invasive neurosurgery to remove a pituitary tumor. I remember seeing Dr. Failor's picture on an awards bulletin board at the UWMC. It was for superb customer service, based on patient reports. Dr. Failor is EXTREMELY incompetent and uncaring! I went to him for hypothyroidism and all he did was do a blood test and prescribe some meds. I never felt any better physically from his "care". He didn't do a thorough physical exam of my thyroid gland and it turned out that I had a large, visible, cancerous tumor that I had to go to another doctor to find out about. The tumor was so large it was visible with the naked eye and had been there so long it could have killed me. I would NEVER recommend anyone go to this doctor for any reason! read more

I have been going to Dr. Failor for 20 some years. He has been consistently professional and caring. I've never had a problem dealing with him. Of course, he is extremely busy however, I don't mind asking the nurse to relay a question to him and then getting the answer. That is the norm in large practices. I know he is like most physicians and is carrying a heavy patient load. I've dealt with a myriad of doctors in all types of specialities over the years and I can honestly say Dr. Failor has given me outstanding care. I've had Type 1 diabetes for 49 years so am very knowledgeable when it comes to diabetic care and have worked with some good doctors but I would rate Dr. Failor as excellent. read more

I went to see Dr. Failor by recommendation. What an absolute joke! My entire experience with him really seemed like a bad joke. I saw him in clinic and communicated by email a lot. Initially, I just thought I needed to be patient and hope nothing bad happened while being patient for this Dr who is supposed to be an expert. Well, that didn't work out for me and as my health was becoming increasingly critical he became less helpful. Thinking back at these months, it still amazes me just how unhelpful and condescending he was to me. I've built really strong great relationships with my providers so this was surprising to have such a fail. I finally decided with the original referring Dr to go to a real expert in the country and along with some actual really smart and kind Dr's in Seattle we got to the bottom of my problem that resulted in a major surgery. Again, this guy was a joke and documented to be wrong wrong wrong! I wouldn't recommend this UW Endo provider to anybody. I'm glad I'm on the road to recovery but it is no thanks to Failor. read more
