Updated after 5 years of playing in the kickball and dodgeball leagues. Overall, Clubwaka in Abq is…read morepretty clutch. I don't feel there is enough variety of activities for the young professionals in Albuquerque. That said, if you want to get away from the gym, work, life stress, and spend time making friends in a boozy fraternity like atmosphere then this is the right scene for you. It's a great forum for meeting lots of people (if in kickball, it's mostly for drinking and less athletic, with dodgeball it's inverse to that), with a range of interests including drinking, hooking up, and being somewhat athletic (aka glory days). Kickball is great for fun times and making you curse more in a game than you have in a year when your 'fun' team gets crushed by the competitive teams. Dodgeball is crazy competitive and exhilarating in its own way...but the drinks don't flow as much, at least til after the games. Both these leagues, plus the others, reward membership with a T-shirt and 2 open bars (mid and end season parties). Overall for $70 it's a great way to get away to college life again, just be sure to keep your day to day on the DL. No ones got time for your adulting.

Playing ball in this league definitely had its fun moments. However, the peer-based reffing system…read morelends itself to a pretty obvious bias toward inner-circle kickballers who have been around the league a while. If you're part of the "in crowd" calls get made in your favor, and if you're a newbie team or a less than "elite" team, there's really nothing you can do about it. It's also pretty obvious that the league's leadership wants to be well liked by the cool kids because they simply pretend like none of this is going on and any feedback or constructive criticism of the structure falls on deaf ears. Kickball is fun, don't get me wrong, but way too many people in this league think it's all there is to life. You'll find out quickly enough just how awesome their mad kickball skills are because they will let you know constantly...even in the rec/beginner league. If you're looking for a fun, relaxed way to play with people who like kickball, but have a life outside of it...I'd look elsewhere. After more than 5 seasons, I'll be looking for a new league to play in and so will my team. :)

I've been playing at Charlie's Sandbox for a little over a year now, and have to say that I've met some pretty awesome people here. There are 6 sand courts indoor and 3 courts outside. League play is once a week during weekdays (co-ed 4s and 6s, beginners to advanced levels). For a 6s team, cost per person is about $112, which is kind of steep, but it's for 3 months worth of league play. Open tournaments are on Saturdays and Sundays (King of the Beach, Queen of the Beach, co-ed 4s and 6s). Just check the website to see what tourneys are coming up as well as start times (Charlie usually has a tourney every weekend). Charlie's Sandbox just opened their Sand Bar, which can make things more interesting. ;o) they also serve hot dogs, etc. If you're interested in sand volleyball, definitely check it out.

Beyond Dissappointed. Summer practice was ok- coaches seemed to enjoy teaching girjs some skills,…read morechargef a decent fee, but it wasn't all that. A ton of girls and no real games, only scrimmages against the same team..little play time, and not competitive. Gym with no seating, no scoreboard, and mixmatched uniforms. Got a notice of a "club team tryouts". Asked if this was diffetent that summer session, and it was made to sound professional....Let me count the ways I now consider this place a scam: 1. Must pay 35$ BEFORE parent meeting and tryouts..No Refunds. (Thats pay $35 FIRST, show up and get outrageous fee schedule...even if you aren't interested - NO Refunds). 2. Some girls already returning from previous season before trying out, already picked out..seems its NOT merit based. 3. Fee schedule from basic in town $1250 with 2 weekly practices- to $2200 for practices and 4 "national" tournaments against second rate organizations in CO and TX...Id consider that regional not national.. 4. Costs cover: coach fees, coaching expenses, coaching practices, 2 practices per week, uniform...NOT food, NOT travel, NOT lodging (although I'd wager that coaches food, travel, and lodging are part of their "expenses". 5. Payment plan or "fundraising" to help others afford participation (probably selected by the same organizers that couldn't answer simple questions like: How are you diffetent than other clubs in the area?")..(by the way if I pay $2200 Im not selling chocolates too lol)...oh yeah and membership fees of $55 on top of it all. 6. 6 tryout dates..30+ girls each time...$35 prepay..do the math...(here, Ill help..$6,500 JUST for tryout fees..and location hasn't been updated in over 5 years, is run by family, and only has seating for appox. 30 people..where is all that $$ going) 7. And then..8-10 girls per team..so 4 spots rotating out..not much play time...and not competative. These fees are ridiculous. If I were you, unless there are NO other options (btw there ARE other options) and you are desperate to have your child show up for something and have $$ to waste...skip the fee and save your time & $$. I recommend Charlies Sandbox (summer sessions really improved skills!)

You play 3, 4 or 5 on a team and then it's standard soccer on a smaller field. Run around, knock people over and kick the ball into the goals. A 10 minute game can seriously test your endurance, but if you want to go easier, you can do that too. Make sure you knock people over. That's half the fun! Highly recommended!!

If you want to connect with this awesomeness, simply call or contact 'em via their website. The company is very new to ABQ and they're willing to meet you virtually anywhere, indoor or outdoor, as long as the space is relatively level, I'd say they need about 25 yards of length, 10 yards wide. That's it, people. They handle everything else. They're punctual, friendly, informative, incredibly fun and yeah, you will need to sign a waver because this game is not for the faint of heart and claustrophobes should probably sit it out. So what's it about? The pictures provide decent context, but as a participant, you'll begin by squeezing your torso into a giant plastic orb which straps you in by the shoulders, and you'll grip some handles. The view is exactly what you'd imagine, sort of mottled and trippy (you're staring through a couple layers of lining). After teams have been divvied the 10 minute game is on, and believe me, that's all you'll need for a workout that blends something reminiscent of Jackie Chan's Drunken Master with adolescent futbol, harmless Gladiator glee and an accidental goal or two. Prepare to breathe deeply and take a breather, and if you're a hot-blooded midwestern transplant like me, that cocoon will get sweat-soaked. It's cool, though. The vessels are cleaned between matches. A fantastic team-building exercise, this is perfect for corporate events, birthday parties, ex-lover angst expulsion or silly Yelp gatherings, you can't go wrong with this non-blood sport. And when the game is done, you're not done, yet. There's a "Last Man Standing" closer, wherein everybody slams everybody faux mosh pit style. Sounds like a party? It is. Hardcore. But bouncy.

All of the puzzles they had set up worked well with the theme of the room, some of the puzzles were obviously easier than others but they all were exciting to complete. There were six of us in total & there were enough puzzles for all of us to be able to work on something whether it was alone or with a partner to escape the room faster. We think they did a great job with decorating the room to feel like it was straight out of the 80's, we had two party members who were teens in the 80's, two who were born in 89/91 and two in the 2000's so it was a great experience for the different ages. If we were to visit Albuquerque again, we would visit again to do one of their other rooms.

I booked the ZOMBIES!!! room with my brother (just the two of us) and we had the room -- and all of the puzzles -- to ourselves. This room was rated at a 7/10 difficulty, but we both like zombies, so we gave it a shot. The staff was friendly when we checked in, gave us a quick run-down of the process and what to expect, and we got to solving. We got stuck a couple of times and were able to easily get a hint, and then after we ran out of time, they showed us a big surprise we were almost able to solve. I am sure there are a lot of escape room options, but I recommend this one for sure. The next time I am in town, I will try out another one of their rooms.
