I stumbled across Trattoria da Gianni tucked along a busy street with most tables already full, which is usually a good sign. No overthinking it, I took a seat and went with my usual test dish--spaghetti carbonara--paired with a Coca-Cola. After a short wait of about five minutes, the plate arrived piping hot, steam rising off it like it had just been sent straight from the heart of the kitchen. First impression: simple, honest, and inviting. I added a generous sprinkle of Parmesan, gave it a quick mix, and went in. That first bite delivered exactly what you hope for in a place like this. The pasta was cooked beautifully--firm but not stiff--and the sauce was rich, creamy, and well balanced without being heavy. It had that comforting, no-nonsense flavor that makes you slow down and actually pay attention to what you're eating. Sitting outside under the open-air Venetian streetscape added to the experience. Between bites you've got the rhythm of people passing by, conversations bouncing off the surrounding buildings, and that relaxed energy only Venice seems to pull off so effortlessly. It's the kind of spot where you can easily lose track of time--half people-watching, half just enjoying the moment. All in all, Trattoria da Gianni delivered a solid first meal in Venice. Nothing overly complicated, just good food in a great setting--which is exactly what you want when you're starting a stay in a city like this. I'll almost certainly find myself back here again before I leave Venice.

Get lost in Venice and found this restaurant. It is right at the corner of a quiet courtyard…read moreneighborhood. The waiter is very friendly and invite us to have lunch, and menu price look reasonable so let's go for it. We ordered clam and mussels. So amazing and yummy, especially the soup! I really want to finish all of it. The scallop spaghetti is also very yummy. I love this place. Good vibe, friendly service, and most important is the food quality. 5 stars for sure. For dinner in peak season, try to make a reservation as the restaurant is very small. We arrived before our reservation time and were seated immediately inside and greeted warmly by the restaurant owner. We ordered a bottle of wine to start (most under 20 Euros for a 75 ML bottle). For appetizers we ordered the cheese with honey for 13 Euros, absolutely amazing! We also combined this with the local olive oil and fresh bread brought to the table to start as well. For our second course we chose two pastas, the Penne Alla Amatriciana (I think it was around 12 Euros), and the Spaghetti Alla Carbonara (I think it was around 12 Euros as well). Both had extremely fresh homemade ingredients and were out of this world and extreme attention to care in the preparation. For our entree we split the breaded pork chop (I think it was around 20 Euros), including a side of potatoes (similar to the steak fries that you would see in the U.S.) The service was absolutely amazing and we loved dining alongside the owner and his family and meeting the cat that also lives at the restaurant and comes by to greet you during the meal as well. It truly was like you were dining at the home of the owner and is a must try if you are in Venice!

Al Timon was the culinary highlight of my visit to Venice. We went for Sunday lunch-- restaurant…read morewas quite busy; there were a few tables inside. Servers were welcoming and answered questions my friend and I had about the menu. The steak platter was AMAZING. 10/10. Truly such a memorable meal. I loved the chips and tzatziki-like sauce that were served alongside the meat. The complimentary limoncello at the end of our meal topped off our incredible experience. Would travel all the way back just for this gem of a spot. Thank you!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Definitely get the Lombatello steak if you are feeling carnivorous…read more Throngs of lively people sipping wine and snacking on cichetti late into the evening along the canal. The cichetti selection looked very good (variety thinned out throughout the night), but our party of 3 was starving and we opted to sit inside for a late ~8:30pm dinner. We got one order of grilled lamb and the Lombatello steak for 2. The lamb was also good, no gamey taste. The Lombatello steak was simply fantastic, choose this cut specifically!! A heaping pile of medium-rare meat (cannot buy single portions) that was very tender and flavorful. It's cushioned with steak fries and grilled veggies on the side. Paired with two glasses of house wine, this meal was fantastic. Ended up with a to go box of steak and fries. Servers are very busy, bustling around clearing tables, taking orders, etc, but they are vigilant if you need anything. We saw one table of ~10 order a steak platter, and it was a sight to behold - a massive wooden cutting board packed with steak, transported by two waiters.
