Why 5 stars? Because this was our most memorable meal in Venice. --- --- --- We had another meal in Venice that was pretty damn delicious, but there was something so delightful about Al Nono Risorto. First off, our journey to find the restaurant was an interesting one. It was definitely off the beaten path, and since it was dark outside, it was interesting to walk down the alleys at night. In any other circumstance, you'd assume you might be in a potentially bad situation to be walking down a dark alley at night, but in Venice, almost everywhere is an alley! And almost everyone there is a tourist like yourself. Once we arrived, we sat out in the garden, which was as charming as possible. We were on a kick to order pizza and pasta every-other meal, and since we had pasta for lunch, guess what it was time for? We went with the carbonara pizza and the prosciutto pizza. Both were as good as it gets - definitely up there with the best pizza that we had in all of Italy. But the most memorable aspect of our experience was the tiramisu. This was the best that I've ever had, without a doubt. After every bite, I almost wanted to cry: #1 Because it was so perfect and #2 Because every bite I took meant I was one moment closer to no longer being able to eat it. I had the beef fillet pieces with a green peppercorn sauce and peas. It was pretty tasty. The lasagne was so creamy and soft, it practically melted in your mouth. The same could be said for the gnocchi - that sauce was to die for. Service was a bit slow the day we were there, but I wasn't in any particular rush so it wasn't a big deal. Very nice garden area to have lunch or dinner. Not particularly touristy, thankfully. Just simple, straightforward, and good. I had the spaghetti with mussels and clams and was very happy with the overall flavors. The pasta was not home made, but it was still pretty good. My girlfriend had the penne, which was also quite good as well. Those dishes plus bread, beer, a bottle of water, and an espresso came out to €34 so not bad value for money either. We had high hopes for this charmer just across the canal from Campo San Cassiano. We wanted to dine with the locals (assuming there were some) on our final night in Venezia, 2/13/2016, before continuing on to Firenza. Everything about the dining experience was okay. However, the next morning, my wife and I were both battling food poisoning- mine moderate, hers severe enough that we had to cancel our travel plans, extend our stay an extra night, and call in a doctor. The suspected culprit: the shellfish in the special of the day--either the clams or the mussels, or both. My wife is a big fan of shellfish, so I let her have the majority of them, and took just a few for myself; hence the difference in the severity of our illnesses. Still, mistakes can happen in any kitchen in the world, and the other dishes--the big salad, a Margherita pizza and squid with polenta--which we shared more or less equally, were delicious. The service was expectedly casual, the atmosphere was rollicking, and everybody had a splendid time. Until the next morning. So, a 5-star effort spoiled by a 0-star finish . . . Pizza with salmon and arugula 2/5 - this dish was overly salty and barely palatable. I thought it was going to be more lightly seasoned salmon but this was more like lox....and quite salty! Skip this one Fried seafood platter - 4/5 - this is a surprisingly decent sized dish with a nice mix of seafood on top of polenta. There was one thing in there that was particularly gritty and of the sea but all the other items were super fresh. If you're sitting in the outdoor area watch out for the tiny Mosquitos! We got attacked during our meal but didn't quite notice the extent until later...its location next to the small waterway must be harboring some mosquito eggs! read more

Difficult to find, but looking for this adorable place just added to the adventure! Not a touristy place at all. There are tables inside, but the best seats are in the garden. The menu has many, many choices, but we decided to order from the "Menu del Giorno" which gave us each a two course dinner with bread. My daughter started with the "Spaghetti al Nono Risorto" which was full of shellfish and topped with a light tomato sauce. My starter was "Pennete al Ragu' (short pasta with a flavorful meat-sauce). Both were delicious.... and those (along with the wonderful bread and olive oil that was brought to the table) would have been enough for a meal. But alas, in Italy pasta is only a starter. For our main courses my daughter had pan fried salmon and I had beef bresaola with parmesan cheese and rocket salad. Both entrees were fresh, light, and flavorful. Found this place by accident and s lucky one at that. A tree covered courtyard offered a respite from the high heat. A friendly and attentive staff brought the required liquid refreshment quickly. What a difference a night makes. Went last night, 6 of us, promptly seated. Great service, great food. We liked it so much we decided to return for another night. Big mistake. Seated promptly. Took our orders. 4 of us received our orders in a timely manner. When everyone else was finished one of our party finally received his order. When he was done the remaining person finally received her order. From start to finish about 90 minutes from first order to last. Needless to say the meal was ruined. Waiter tried to blame us....really? Voiced our displeasure over the situation with the waiter, not even an offer of a drink or dessert. No refund. If you don't mind eating in shifts give it a try. If you would like to enjoy each other's company over a good meal shared together, move on. If you do give it a try and something goes wrong be prepared to be insulted by your waiter. After reading reviews on both Yelp and Trip Advisor my family and I thought this would be a good bet for dinner after a disastrous lunch at a restaurant where we ordered first, THEN read the reviews. Unfortunately, we were just as disappointed with this meal. We waited about 20 minutes for a table which was fine considering we are a party of 5. Once seated we waited another 20+ minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. A waitress came over to take our order and when my mother asked a question about how something was prepared (my mom has a food allergy) she was very curt and said she would check with the kitchen. We never saw her again. Another young man came over a few minutes later to take our order. He was helpful and spoke good English so he was able to advise us on what my mother could eat. He came back with a drink order but then we didn't see him again for at least another 30 minutes. Once the food arrived I found my meal, gnocchi with shrimp and zucchini marginal at best. My daughter's caprese salad was meh... the mozzarella was OK, but the tomatoes lacked flavor. My mom and sister both ordered the baked sea bass with potatoes. It didn't look like sea bass, but maybe sea bass is different here in Italy. Overall this was a very disappointing meal. I really thought food here would be better than this. read more
