    Picnic at the park! Lakefront!
    Samantha E.

I frequent Al Lopez Park and not just for free Covid tests but those were nice too! Once you are in AL Lopez park you no longer feel like you are in the City of Tampa. You can walk an a large nature trail through what feels like native Florida and see bunnies and other wildlife. If is incredibly peaceful yet minutes from Dale Mabry Highway. There is a really big lake with a bunch of picnic tables around it. My husband and I will grab food from a restaurant nearby and enjoy it looking at the lake. The entire trail loop is about a mile but I recommend checking out the shady area near the lake in the summer because it's cooler and a Florida throwback vibe. The park also has pavilions that you can rent and bathrooms, amble parking, a bat cave, open fields, a few dog parks and a playground. The park is also home to many 3k races and walks. Otherwise, it's never busy, really a Tampa secret so don't tell anyone!

Beautiful park! Came here for a picnic and it was lovely. Very specious. A great place for dogs and kids. A nice hiking trail that's about 1.1 miles, lots of trees so there's a good amount of shade. Ample parking.

Beautiful trail through the woods. You'd never know it abuts to a busy dale mabry. Thai park is serene with lots of trail to keep the burn of your walk going. Shaded with lots of trees and multiple playground areas for the kids. The park is well kept and my dog loves our nature walk around the beautiful lake. Catch turtles, birds and a gator every now and then. Lots of shelters to rent and plenty of restrooms.

Dog park has plenty of shade

This is an instance where I wish I could give 3.5 stars, but the positives outweigh the negatives (see end), so 4 stars it is. Those who know me know that I have an amazingly cute, yet very demonic dog who has me wrapped around his little finger. I'm joking of course (about the demonic part... well, kinda). My exploration of Tampa required I find a dog park and I came across Al Lopez park. First impression is that this place is massive. It comes with domino tables (with a huge sign on the road pointing to the domino table), pavilions, trails, trees, a deck, open fields, statuary, a swamp, and yes, a dog park. The positives are that there is tons of shade, numerous pavilions and a great deal of variety at this park. It has a similar quality to much larger parks such as Boston Common, where you forget you're in the heart of a city and just a few hundred feet away there is tons of traffic and hustle and bustle. Specific to the dog park, it has a segmented area for super tiny dogs with overly cautious parents, and a large open area running space. My dog quickly became a spec and then started sprinting back. They also have foot-operated watering stations and some tables under trees. Makes it very convenient not to have to bring a portable dish/water as well as having to stand while the kids get their excercise. The negatives: Some dog owners here are a bit on the suspect side. I saw some larger dogs growl and look like they were going to scuffle. So of course, instead of separating, they all decided to sit at the same table, so the dogs kept scuffling. There is also the thing with barriers all around the park. Some roads dead end into metal pillars designating pedestrians only. There is also a legit looking entrance that you only realize is NOT an entrance when you hit a chained up wooden fence 20 feet after you turn. There are also random cones that close off a street and make you try to u-turn inside a parking lot.

We live right next to Al Lopez. It's a great park. There are three playgrounds within the park. Plenty of trail and pathway to walk on or bike ride. Lots of field space to play sports. Plenty of pavilions and picnic tables. Lots of parking. We love going to Al Lopez and meeting our friends there!

I just moved to the area and I found this place on Apple Maps and I decided to pop in and take a new trail. This place has so much to offer and a lot of space to do so definitely my new favorite spot! There is also a huge dog park I love it!!!

Amazing Park. The walking paths are awesome. There is enough room to walk, skate, and ride your bike. A lot of open space to enjoy a game of soccer m, or just run around. I love the fact that there are a few different play ground areas for kids. A really nice park that meets all kind of needs for everyone.

This is a great park in Tampa. Al Lopez has a very large dog park, children park, as well as a walking trail(1.3 mile loop - mostly shaded) and lots of open grass for outdoor activities. The dog park itself is located within the main park. We walk the dogs at Al Lopez multiple times a week and also frequent the dog park. The dog park is grass and some patches of dirt. Water fountains for dogs are inside the dog park. There is a few picnic tables to sit at. There is no washing station for the dogs, but my dogs usually don't need a bath after playing there.

Small dog park is pure nasty dark sand. There is no grass on small side.
    Josie I.

The small dog side is nothing but dirty nasty dark sand. There is NO grass. Will never be back. I'm not sure why they haven't put down Astroturf or mulch Robert chips for the small dog side. It would be helpful if they had a rinse-off station considering your dog will be just covered in dirt sand. Having shade was not worth the mess. I'd bring a towel with at least a 2 gallons to rinse your dog before getting back in car. Also this is the type of sand that stains.

It's a park for any type of gathering. There are a bunch of pavilions, multiple pathways and trails for working out, multiple playgrounds, and there's a scenic little lake. The pavilions are actually pretty large in comparison to some other parks I've been to snd they have grills for BBQing. I believe you can rent them out for events. On the far end, there's a even a dog park. I wish someone would upkeep this park a little more because it really is pretty but the filth is overpowering. Maybe I went on a bad week or month but it was pretty run down. When I was by the lake, it really stunk which is so unfortunate because it's a beautiful view.

Al Lopez Park with it's entrance on Himes Avenue, in between Hillsborough and MLK Avenues
    Steve E.

Al Lopez Park is a beautiful, shaded nature park located in West Tampa, just north of Raymond James Stadium. The park is bordered by Hillsborough Avenue to the north, MLK Blvd to the south, Dale Mabry Highway to the west, and Himes Avenue to the east. The entrance to the park is on Himes Avenue, just south of Hillsborough. My favorite thing about this park are all of the shade trees, which offer a welcome respite during a blistering summer day. Al Lopez is a very popular spot on the weekends for family picnics, but during the week the park is much quieter, and perfect for hikers and joggers. This park is a popular location for various 5K run / walks and other events throughout the year, and as a result they have two well-paved and lit circular trails which are popular with joggers, bicyclists, in-line skaters, dogs on their leashes, and Moms pushing strollers. Al Lopez has a number of picnic shelters, tables, and outdoor grills, as well as a large playground area for children. There are two lakes within the park, and the one on the north end has a fishing pier. You'll see a few bat shelters in the park, which likely means that you'll see the Caped Crusader and his friends flying about the West Tampa at night. In one corner of the park is a large fenced-in dog park with a separate fenced-in area for smaller dogs. Both of these areas offer lots of room to run, sniff the various doggie obstacles, roll in the mud, and have a drink from the doggie fountains. They have signs encouraging you to clean up after your dog, and I am quite sure that Park personnel will hunt you down and rub your face in the pooh if you don't clean up after your mutt. Bad dog! The Cordelia Hunt Community Center also resides within Al Lopez Park, and this provides meeting rooms, and a small indoor workout facility, along with very clean restrooms. In the corner of the park closest to MLK Blvd and Dale Mabry Highway is the Cancer Survivors Plaza. This somber and poignant memorial pays tribute to those who have been afflicted by cancer, and those who have successfully beat the disease. As someone who lost his Mother to cancer, and someone who has seen others survive the disease, I always find this little corner of Al Lopez park to be a quiet place to stop and reflect.

Nice local park in far south Tampa…read more I came here with my daughter and my dog. We followed the Google map directions, and we ended up parking just about as far away from the dog park as one can park (if you don't want to circumnavigate the lake, enter the Interbay Little League area off MacDill, and follow the signs to the dog run parking lot). There's a well-kept, paved path around the lake, and there are a few benches here and there to rest and look at the water. The path is not shaded, so be forewarned. The dog park is pretty nice. There are three fenced areas: one for small dogs, one for regular dogs, and one that is for more aggressive dogs. We went into the largest area, which had dogs of all sizes, but all the dogs were good natured. My pup loved running around with all the friendly dogs. The area seemed pretty clean (there are dog bag dispensers and trashcans strategically placed around the area, and owners seemed conscientious.) there was a doggie water fountain, which was a nice touch. There were muddy areas, but who doesn't expect to have to bathe your dog after going to the dog park? There were a few picnic tables for the owners to use, and there were some trees for shade.

I also saw some pretty, bold squirrels, too. The dogs enjoyed chasing the squirrels up the tree and the squirrels seem to enjoy taunting the dogs. I saw families with little ones, small groups, and individuals walking, jogging, and biking. They stayed a safe distance from one another so that we could all comfortable enjoy the day. This is a great little neighborhood park! I will definitely return.

We took my pup Elphaba (Elphie) to the dog park side for her 3rd Birthday (adoption day since we don't know the exact date). She came to live with us 2 years ago when she found us on our visit to the Tampa Bay Humane Society! We didn't go to the human side of the park but we saw a decent crowd there and a lot of families. All of the park is quite shady which is nice in Florida. COVID: It was outdoors but if you are worried, there wasn't a mask in sight. There were large groups of people under the pavilion sitting together with no masks. We just stayed away from there. Everyone in the dog park side was completely socially distanced from each other, so no worries on that side. The park could use a little refresh and the biggest problem I found is there is no separation for small dogs. My dog is 9 lbs and she was in the park with dogs who weighed up to 100 lbs and were much larger. At one point I had to rescue her since she was the only small dog and the other dogs began to chase her, flipping her over, and stepping on her. They didn't mean to hurt her but they did by playing too rough for her size. They also need to add more grass if it's possible. Your dog is going to be pretty dirty after a visit since there's a lot of dirt area and very little grass. Otherwise, it's still a great place and it's nice to have a spot to take your dog where he or she can run around and have fun. There are plastic bags at the front gate for you to clean up after your dog. Everyone we saw did so and I never saw any doggy poop in the park area. They have a little, plastic pool you can fill up with water and a couple of dog bowls out for water as well. We spent about an hour to hour and a half there celebrating Elphie's Bday! We shared some peanut butter doggy cheesecake and birthday dog treats with the other visitors and had fun meeting people and their dogs from afar! I'm very grateful to have a dog park close by!

It seems that most people who make use of the park live on the neighborhood and everyone I have encountered is very nice. Although I have not actually gone into the other part of the park beyond the dog play area, there is a fenced in area which is good for small gatherings. There are picnic tables under a shelter and a public restroom. There is also a grassy, fenced in area which is suitable to play catch, soccer, or tag or whatever your heart desires. There is also a basketball court and children's' playground play set in addition to a (basic) charcoal grill. The dog park area is fenced and has somewhat sandy ground. There are trees and areas of shade and picnic benches. In the center there is a water station with hoses and water bowls for your four-legged loves. Doggie waste bags are well stocked whenever I've been there. The area can be a bit bug ridden in the evening so it may be smart to cover your skin or wear bug repellent if you have sweet blood. Whenever I bring my dog Sophia she has a marvelous time interacting with other dogs and people. There is plenty of space for her to get her insane amount of energy out. This is one of my favorite dog parks.

I saw owners picking up poop, but there is still enough poop to warn you of your step while there. The was a water fountain at the entrance as well, too. There is a covered concrete portion with seats. It was posted that on Wednesday's the park is closed sunrise to noon for maintenance.
