We are here several times a year for family gatherings. Located on the Hillsborough River, not too far north of downtown Tampa, & very close to I-275,, this park is ACROSS the street from Lowry Park Zoo. Shelters can be reserved from the City of Tampa for a small fee, but inconveniently NOT online - you have to visit their office on Columbus near Himes. This is the only reason I give this park 4 stars - it's 2015, it should be easier to reserve a shelter! We've been in many different shelters throughout the park, and all have been a great size for our large family. You can look online to see how big each shelter is, including number of tables & location within the park, which is helpful for reserving a shelter. Except, as I've mentioned, not being able to actually reserve online. Bathrooms are hit or miss here. The last time we were here, in mid-October, the bathroom by the large playground was fairly clean, but today it was not. The park has two great playgrounds, plus a boat ramp, and a dock, so there's really something for everyone, right on the Hillsborough River in urban Tampa!

We had a wonderful time at the zoo yesterday!!! I recommend. Food and drinks are pricey so just eat ahead of time.

Located across the street from Lowry Park Zoo, this Tampa Park has a lot to offer. It is great for a quiet stroll or run along its paved paths that lead you to the boat ramp, licnic pavilions, to the springs, and playgrounds. Speaking of playgrounds, there are three for the kidos. Two playgrounds are located in the main parking lot across from the zoo (same area as boat ramp), and the third is in the middle of the park. The latter playground is newer and has lots of climbing features and "monkey" bars. The paths run along side the river where you can see a variety of birds, including the tri-colored heron, night herons, anhingas, and even ospreys on occassion. Turtles are not uncommon, and we just spotted two manatees the other day. Although I haven't seen any recently, there have been alligators in the spring and along the river. The boat ramp is relatively small but it works, especially around invasion time (GET THERE EARLY). If there isn't enough parking right by the ramp, there is a very large open field 1/4 mile away (still part of the park). There are plenty of picnic tables and pavilions for your parties and reunions Come walk through the park and hang out by the river!!

The only thing not giving this park a full 5 stars is the age of the wooden bridges, boardwalks, and docks. They are simply old and showing their age. The rest of the park is well maintained and planned- plenty of small and large structures for picnics and parties, a very new-looking play area for children, and a paved walking path that loops through the interior and along the river. I'll definitely be back!

I've seen stingrays and manatee here when the dam on the Hillsborough River lets in saltier water. You can walk on water on the boardwalk, ride bikes, jog, nature watch or even host a party. There are shelters, picnic benches and restrooms for your convenience and the park staff does a great job of keeping it clean. There are two playgrounds too for hours of fun for the little ones. It's a perfect day to spend the day or a couple of hours. And it's all right in my beloved Seminole Heights across from the Lowry Park Zoo. Never gets old!

The nature center has a bathroom and a bit of information, but all the displays were empty, including the outdoor one that allegedly used to have a tortoise. The center is currently closed due to Covid but the bathrooms are open. From what I could tell, on our mad dash to the bathroom and distance viewing, the displays are informative and well done. I'd love to return when it is safe to and take a look. The park has three trails that are part of the spree. We hiked the Bobcat Trail since it includes the boardwalk. The trail travels for about a half mile through trees and over dusty shells. Then it connects to the boardwalk. This was by far the best part. We walked along the beautiful, tree lined water, getting up close and personal with a bunch of small black crabs. We scanned the water for manatees but were not lucky to find any. The trail ends back at the nature center. We climbed the back steps to the top level and caught a great view of the river and the distant city. After the hike we hit up the playground for a few minutes. This is always my kids' favorite part. We also stopped off at the butterfly garden which was pretty active on this day. The park was in great shape, the bathrooms were clean, there were lots of people around doing various park things. Canoeing, kayaking, hiking, nature hunting and playing on the playground are just some of the things available at your fingertips here. So glad we visited! Can't wait to return to check out the other trails.

We visited the park recently and were on the hunt for as many bird species we could identify. Found some birds we had never seen before and it was so much fun trying to hunt them down by their calls. I've never not seen a gator when visiting but you had to take your time and look closely. I can't say enough about this park. Just $2 to enter the park. There are picnic areas you can reserve, volleyball courts, playgrounds, trails, restrooms and an onsite nature center. You really cannot ask for much more. Definitely worth the visit!

We walked the paved trail all around the park and got to check out the boardwalk too. We were able to see snakes, turtles, rabbits and alligators while we were here which was exciting. I didn't know there was a nature center building, but once we saw it we went ahead and checked it out. There was a lot of educational things about the park history, environment, animals, etc inside the building. On the outside of the nature center is a native plant garden. You can also rent canoes and kayaks, but we didn't do that on our visit. Overall: highly recommend! I will definitely be back especially with the weather cooling down later in the year!

This is an all ages, all ability, open park and playground…read more The location is great because it is in a neighborhood yet close to the highway. There are plenty of shade trees, and there are a few areas to picnic as well as different playground areas if you feel one is too crowded for your little one. We went to the larger playground area with my grandson, and he loved it. There are swingsets for all ages and abilities, which is very nice for all. The pirate ship has a great musical area as most kids like to bang on things that they can control the sounds. There are plenty of open areas to play ball or just run from tree to tree like the squirrels. My only complaint is that the park could be a little better maintained for trash. There was random garbage that people should have thrown away, but they didn't, so it made the park look a little unkempt. Parking is plentiful but not in abundance in any one area, so be prepared to park and walk to the playground on a busy weekend or after school.

This is a great local park with wide grassy areas for kids to run around…read more My local park was all booked up for my daughter's birthday weekend, but there were picnic shelters available at MacFarlane Park, so we decided to check it out. We rented a "small" shelter that had 24 person capacity. An all day rental was about $27, a bargain. The park is pretty big with multiple areas where you can park, so make sure you look at a park map to get an idea of where you should park to be closest to where you want to go. The playground looked like a lot of fun, but our shelter was closer to the tennis courts, and the kids ended up just running up and down the hill, which was fine with me! The area looked well-maintained, and the shelters were in better shape than the picnic shelters in most of the South Tampa parks.
