This place used to be my favorite in the entire valley. Today I drove 35 minutes out of my way to pick up an order which I thought was going to be amazing as usual I ordered my usual, chicken tikka masala spice level five because seven is way too spicy. Portions are smaller the sauce has absolutely no flavor and zero spice. It's too bad they used to be very good despite always having bad service. I would only recommend this place to a mother-in-law you hate. That would be the best prank to play on unsuspecting in-laws. Now they neither have good service or good food. If I could leave a zero I would. Called ahead to order take out, was told it would be 20 minutes. Showed up in that time frame, was then told it would be another 10 minutes. No problem I thought, have been coming to this place for years, can wait. Again ask in 10 minutes, was told it would be another 20 minutes without explanation. STILL after a total 50 minutes of waiting, no food, ( not from the time of order actually on premises) was told 10-15 more minutes. One person working in the front, not sure how many people working in the back, but a total of 6 patrons in the restaurant. Really not that difficult, take the order and do the job. We love this restaurant. It's actually our kid's favorite. They love the mango lassi drink and the chicken tikka. Our favorites are the chicken tikki masala and the eggplant Bharma (maybe spelled that wrong). Our sons don't like spicy but we do so the staff will even accommodate and offer spice on the side (Peppers or chili paste). The ambiance is good for a date night, quiet family night and they have room for large groups. read more

This is quite possibly the best Indian food we've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. We visited on a Monday night, a typically quiet evening, and our family ended up sharing nearly half of the menu. The samosas were perfectly light, setting the tone for a fantastic meal. The roti and naan were outstanding, truly some of the best we've tasted. The gentleman assisting us was professional, kind, and courteous, making our experience even better. While ambiance isn't our top priority, we couldn't help but notice how welcoming and comfortable the setting was, adding to the overall experience. We have been to this location pre and post-pandemic. During the pandemic we have been getting take out (instead of inside seating), so this review is regarding our last two take out experiences. You can order on-line which makes it easy. Our to go order has always been ready on time when we arrived for pick up. Staff are pleasant and assuring. As with the in-person seating, the take out food was quite good. We usually get the chicken korma. The sauce is always thick and rich. The ingredients blend well, the sauce is not broken even with a take out experience. By "broken", I mean the ingredients start to separate - did not happen. We have also had their chicken tikka masala, medium heat. If you like tomato based sauces, you may want to give this a try. It was quite nice as well, but we like the richness of the chicken korma sauce with the cream added as part of the sauce recipe. The chicken tikka masala is made with chicken breast, and the chicken korma is made with dark meat chicken. That may help you decide as well. The naan bread is always delightful. Their naan is more of a "pull" bread, with some stretch, as naan should have. The size of the pieces of naan for the price is fair. To enjoy with our rice and naan we ordered their raita. While sometimes we find it is thicker than others, the flavor is always nice, just the right amount of cucumbers and mint. The take out portion, about 8 ounces is enough for two people to share. The papadum, crispy crackers made with lentil flour, was also quite nice. Nice and crispy. If you like chips or crispy things, give an order a try. It is served with a tamarind and a coriander sauce for dipping. We asked for extra dipping sauce and it was included in our bag. Regarding portions: if you get an order of papadam, an order of naan, an order of chicken korma and an order of raita, it is just the right amount for two people to comfortably share for an evening meal at home. We ordered soup, naan, two entrees and split rice pudding. Everything was delicious. For a 5 rating, the service would need to be better. It took a silly length of time to get a bowl of the soup of the day. After the entrees arrived they did well at refilling water glasses. We didn't order soda, but for $3.99 I would be angry to get a 12 Oz can of Pepsi. In the can. Honestly, a restaurant with tablecloths should not serve soda in a can. Very simple achy. And there had better be refills for the price. We will go back (when not in a rush) because the food was worth it! read more

First of all, it now has a new name so I'm guessing new ownership? Went last night. Got there around 5:45 pm and maybe there were 4 other tables of patrons. We had to flag down the one person, so we could order. After threatening to leave, we were served close to 7pm. I had ordered salmon which the server called " fish". When the other two dinners came out, he asked again about what I ordered so I cancelled it. So it took an hour for two dinners and two starters (which came out with dinner). Food was tasty. Went to Al Hamra today with a group of 8 and it was clean, spacious and had an amazing vibe. The food was to die for. We had the lamb dish, chicken Tikka masala, butter naan, ginger chicken and amazing samosas. The food was exquisite and the customer service was above and beyond. My favorite was their tea at the end of the night. It's a half milk and half tea combination and it was delicious. The owner made us feel so welcome and he was so hospitable. Al Hamra is our go-to place for Indian food. My son loves it. He said the food is the closest to his Indian grandmother's food. Which, if I'm being totally honest, is saying a lot! It's also in our hood, so lucky us! The prices here are little higher than other places, but well worth it in my opinion (especially for North Scottsdale)! Full disclosure - we mostly order takeout/delivery (at least once a week!), but the service has always been friendly when we've dined in. A buddy and I had planned to eat at a fantastic Scottsdale sushi joint, but they were jerks about seating (no, I DON'T want to sit at the bar!). We left, and started looking for Indian food instead. We discovered many Indian restaurants had closed during the pandemic. Very sad. Al Hamra was literally "restaurant roulette". It was about as precisely selected as throwing a dart on a map. You are probably familiar with an Indian pastry appetizer called "Samosa" with potatoes, peas and spices. In most Indian restaurants, I am convinced they are buying frozen from the same supplier. They taste good, but the Samosas' at Al Hamra's were a _revelation_. They hand make them, and what a difference! I think we could have eaten another 3 orders of those. For the main course, I had Tandoori Fish. It was perfectly cooked and spiced. I wrapped in plain Naan with Raita. We both left with full stomachs and a smile on our faces. We have dined at Al Hamra several other times and have been very satisfied. Tonight's dinner was disappointing - both the food and service. We shared 2 entrees -Tandoori Chicken and Vegetable Biryani. The spice level on both was consistent with the 3 / 10 heat level that we requested. The chicken tasted good, but you'll never confuse this chicken with 1 from Costco, as the pieces of the half chicken were pretty small. We never had vegetable biryani before (at any Indian restaurant), so weren't sure what to expect. The dish was basically a very large plate of rice with some cooked vegetables throughout the rice. Again, not knowing what is typcial, we thought that there should have been much more vegetables dispersed in so much rice. This restaurant is usually not too crowded. Tonight there were 5 other tables with patrons, plus 3 people sitting in the bar area (see photo). My husband and I have been coming to Al Hamra for years. It's our favorite Indian restaurant in Phoenix. The food is consistently great. The naan always comes out piping hot. It's never very busy.....sometimes we are the only people there, but they appear to do more take out business than dine-in. It's a pleasant place to dine-in......nice tablecloths and cloth napkins. Me and my family always go here once a month AT LEAST for some indian food. It's always amazing and the staff is always so kind. You have to try their tandoori chicken if you go. The sauce that comes with it is so perfect with the tender, spicy chicken. You even get to choose your level of spice. As someone who cannot handle spicy things too well, it has been very convenient and perfect. I like getting a spice level of 4 out of 10. My personal favorite dish is the chicken coconut curry. The chicken is very tender and the curry is so nice and creamy. I usually hate coconut flavored dishes because it makes me feel gross after a few bites, but they somehow perfected it. Their naan is also perfect with the curry. Everytime I went, the naan was perfectly fluffy and never dry or too chewy and hard. So confused by the ratings here. We got chicken makhani and malai kofta. don't have a small sample size. The makhani sauce was good, but the chicken was surprisingly very dry. The kofta was the worst I have literally ever had. It had the consistency of dense paste and tasted undercooked. I love malai kofta and have had it at many restaurants all over the US and the world, so when I say it was the worst, I don't have a small sample size for comparison. I would not come here again for any price because I value delicious food over cheap food- but the fact that their prices are so high adds insult to injury given the quality of the food. read more

I have always liked the food here and the service is very good. However, I think the prices are a bit high, particularly on drinks. I had a split of sparkling wine (prosecco/champagne) which in most restaurants usually ranges from $9 - $12. Here it was $14. If I go there to eat in the future, I won't order alcohol. read more

I am so confused about this place and how it remains in business. I just went there for the third time. We had a reservation for a table for eight. During the time we were there, maybe an additional 6-8 people total came in and out. There appeared to be only two people working in the entire place. One was the cook, and then the other poor guy was the maître d', waiter, bartender, and busboy. In order for him to take care of our table of eight, he would only take our drink orders along with our food orders. So no having a conversation over a drink while we peruse the menu. He really did try his best but he missed at least three or four of our drink orders. Most of the table enjoyed their food I think. However, I ordered a chicken tandoori dish that was so dry it was hard to swallow. I have heard that this place is very big for takeout orders, but they might as well just close the restaurant portion of the place and save money on rent. read more

I lived on the east coast with incredible Indian food and had the hardest time finding anything good here. I found this place a. Couple years ago and it is SO good. I have eaten here 10-20 times at least over the years , and was sad we moved and couldn't get it ... that was ununtil Uber eats started driving to PV for them. I had some issues with Uber eats and commented about the spice level on my ticket- they went out of the way to call me bc I was using a different name for the slice level than they use out here ... medium spicy back eat is a 8/10 here... but I've never had a company call me from an Uber eats order to make sure they got it right- especially not one who doesn't need the great reviews bc they are already so good. The wait staff was good but the food wasn't the best. We love Indian food and eat it several times a year. Everything else was closed so we tried this place. Chicken Tikki masala wasn't the best. Just ok. Malai kofta was salty and hard. The pakoras are weird. You have to choose just onion or just broccoli. They don't have a "veggie pakora." The onion pakora was like American onion rings. Really bizarre. They didn't look like Indian food at all. And I suspect they have either msg or gluten or both because I felt terrible after eating. Usually authentic Indian food is gluten free with the exception of naan but likely not the case here. The rice was sticky and clumped together. I was up all night with gut issues and pain. I recently ordered takeout from Al Hamra, after not eating there for years. It used to be great, but obviously things have changed, since it was overpriced and awful. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Biryani, Samosas, Garlic Naan, Papadum and Mango Chutney. The Chicken Tikka Masala was almost inedible and there were maybe four tiny chunks of chicken for $22. It was greasy and gross. My husband got the Chicken Biryani, which he said tasted pretty good, but also had maybe four tiny chunks of chicken for $21. I think between both of our entrees, we maybe had two ounces of chicken. The Samosas and chutney were good. The Garlic Naan was gross. It was soggy, which I can understand from being takeout, but the flavor was also gross. Worst Indian food I've ever had. I was so disappointed because I've tried Indian food all over the world and was looking forward to trying their tikka masala. When it arrived watery with no flavor I was so confused because everywhere I've had it has been so creamy and flavorful! Their naan bread was also very thin and burnt to a crisp. Surprise! Perhaps the most delicious Indian food that we have had in Scottsdale. That said, there were some failings. The waiter had no clue. Really undertrained. And his bartending skills were worse. But, the family style food we ordered arrived all at one time, after a long unattend and was spectacular although no serving spoons were offered for a family style meal. We all ordered 5 out of 10 spice level (heat) and the kitchen got it right. The portions are not large so for family dining you have to order more dishes which ups the tab. Yesterday I stopped by to pick up take away foods: chicken tikka masala, rice and garlic naan. So I was asking the chef if the chicken tikka masala has the same quality and same taste from the former restraunt: Tandoori Village. Then I got home and tasted it for very first time since I have that chicken tikka masala from Tandoori Village. I didn't know that owner sold Tandoori Village over 10 years ago and set up new restaurant called Al-Hamra! So yes! That chicken tikka masala tastes the exactly same way from Tandoori Village that I hope for and I was so pleased!! You need to try it! This has full of rich flavor and aroma taste!
