We've been to plenty of hibachi restaurants, here in Indy and also in other cities. There really is nothing special about this place. An overview of our experience: Environment: Overall, it's pretty lame. Nothing special. A few paper lanterns here and there, bamboo trees throughout, but the kicker was the basket full of fake kittens at the entrance. Also, seriously cold when we were here. Granted, it's December, but we were literally covered up with Lindsay's coat the entire time. Service: Was also just okay. It took what seemed like forever to get our drinks and have our order taken. (This was somewhat complicated by the people on the opposite end of the grill, who acted like they had no idea what was going on. Really??? Read the menu and be prepared. It's not rocket science). Once we had our order taken, things did speed up. Food: meh. I've had better, I've had worse. The miso is nothing to compliment, it's really boring and plain. The salad was decent. A note worth mentioning, you get a choice of dressing here, which isn't standard for any of the Japanese restaurants we've been to. (Get the ginger, not the sesame). The rice was tasty, as was the rest of the hibachi meal (I got chicken and steak, Lindsay got the salmon). I ordered a spider roll from the sushi bar. It was decent, but much smaller than most other maki rolls I've had before. Price: average. Including tip, 2 hibachi meals, and one maki roll it was $67.00. Overall: we won't be going back. We have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while. Yesterday I almost passed it up after reading some poor yelp reviews. I am very glad we didn't. I'm not sure it really rates five stars, it's probably more like four, but I want to offset the poor reviews. The food was fantastic and we were seated and served very quickly. The restaurant considers itself as a sushi and hibachi restaurant. The sushi part is very lacking. The menu was very Americanized. Almost every sushi option included either fake crab and/or cream cheese. With an already limited sushi choice and then the Americanized options to narrow it down even more, there just wasn't anything that interested me. I was very disappointed. Had never tried this place -- so I tried it and based on my 1st impression will be the first and last time I ever eat here. I was used to Hirosaki Restaurant in Avon and figured this would be very similar, wow I was wrong. The soup was ok , I could literally count upon first glance how many pieces of lettuce was in my salad. The sushi I ordered was warm? I had unsweetened tea that tasted like straight tap water. So the chef comes out and starts cooking, I was hoping my entree would be good. I feel like I got half the portion for double the price compared to my usual Japanese place. $20.00 before tip ? DO NOT get sushi from this place. Go to Kroger! We called in a take-out order giving them the benefit of the doubt from the bad reviews. The food took twice as long as stated, and they didn't complete the order, "didn't have time" to make one of our caterpillar rolls. When we got it back to our place to eat, it all tasted bland and the one caterpillar roll wasn't even cut into individual pieces. We called and asked for a refund, they wanted us to bring it back, so we did, but they would only refund the uneaten portions. Plus I was on hold waiting for the owner for 17 minutes before my husband returned with the uneaten sushi and then they hung up on me. They never apologized or admitted any shortcomings. The chef we had one night was excellent. He really knew his stuff and was a natural ham. I had a lot of fun watching and interacting with him. The food was pretty good, too. The mushroom soup was excellent, the edamame served hot, and the cold sake was pleasant. However, it was a warm day (low 90s) and next to the stove it got SO HOT. I was sweating! This place isn't bad, considering you are in a land-locked mid-western state and it's located in a strip mall. I was visiting from Texas, where we have some great seafood and amazing sushi restaurants, so a critic I am... I was a little taken aback by the young hostess who sat us in an awkward spot around a hibachi grill in the empty restaurant. The waiter came out and asked us for our drink order and then within a minute we were served our drinks and though we had barely sat down and picked up our menus, he pensively came to ask us for our order. Another party came in--two high school boys and their mother--and were sat down across from us...not necessarily ideal for a first date, but hey, we're flexible. We ordered a sushi combo which consisted of four pieces of enari and a spicy tuna roll. For sides we got a seaweed salad, miso soup and some fried rice. We definitely over ordered, but because we didn't want to inconvenience the harried waiter, who brought out our miso soups and passed them out to everyone at the table as though he were serving beer at a sailor dive bar somewhere on the shore. The "miso" soup was good, but I don't know why they didn't just call it chicken broth with a couple of pieces of chicken floating in it. I could neither taste nor recollect when I had had miso soup quite like that. Our next course was fried rice, which was probably the coolest part of the meal because a hibachi chef came out and did a whole rice cooking performance for us. The party across from us had ordered steak and grilled sides, so we also got to watch him in action for their meal which was very entertaining and made me wish we had ordered steak. When we got our sushi, it was pretty decent for what it was and I enjoyed my seaweed salad, which was your standard sweet tasting algae on a plate sprinkled with sesame seeds. Overall, our experience was positive and again, you have to take everything at face value and try to get over the young, somewhat inexperienced waitstaff and just enjoy your time watching the chef play with your delicious food. read more

Just had hibachi dinner. My date had scallops & shrimp and I had chicken. The food was tasty, they served a lot of it, the chef was Japanese and skilled, and it was a good experience over all. We had sake and a Pina Colada, which were good. The service was exceptional. We spent $70 on the two entrees, two alcoholic drinks, egg roll appetizer, and 20% tip. It is clean and well maintained! We came in at 1 on a Saturday. Busy place today but not hugely crowded. Still 4 empty hibachi. Anyway, table we were seated at was dirty, I asked for an extra salad and was told no, I can't substitute soup for salad. That's fine; I wanted to pay for an extra salad. Was told no. This is never a problem during the week. I'm a regular here. I would complain but it's the manager who seated us at a dirty table. I don't know that I will be back for awhile; managers attitude and attention will have to change before I give them anymore money. read more

The food is not that great! It was very salty. The teriyaki sauce tasted like salt. The service was VERY slow. We ordered sushi at the beginning of the meal and it took so long to get it it was no longer desired. The manager came to the table and proceeded to argue with my cousin. 1-27-18. 4 people with an $81 bill for lunch. Tried to flag down a server for a refill on drinks through the whole meal. Finally after we were done eating I had someone come up and offer a refill. I declined saying that I am now done eating. The little older woman that works there happen to be standing there. I tried to explain to her what had happen and asked for 2 soft drinks to be taken off of the bill. She literally said we are to busy to give refills. I argued my point then she walked off shaking her head at me. I approached the same woman at the cash register about removing. This time after receiving the bill and the drinks are still on there. She told me they were to busy again. And I should have grabbed someone to get a refill. By this time I am very upset and tell here to hire more people and she tells me that they called in. So, I reply then you should not take in more people then you can handle. We went back and forth trying to get her to remove the drinks and did not see my point on very poor customer service. She just told me that if I did not pay for the drinks she was going to call the police. And picked up the phone and started dialing. All this over 2 soft drinks. Not to mention 2 people's meals in our party had the yakisoba noodles given to someone else at the table and had to run and remake them with out the vegetables that came in them. Just through them on the grill and then on the plate. This was a terrible experience. Meeting there after a funeral for loved one topped it off. I will never return to this place. Funny how they had time to refill everyone at the table with water but not anything else. Worst customer service on the worst day. Unbelievable!!!! Congratulations on being one of the worst restaurants I have ever visited. My intent was only to have a quick sushi dinner. It turned into an hour of hell. My experience began by my waitress saying, "I'm OK I guess" after asking her how she was doing. I knew things would do go downhill from there. After placing my order, 35 minutes went by with no service. Finally she shows up with my sushi order. The fish was horrible -- fresh is simply not in this restaurant's vocabulary. For a brief moment I thought there might be SOME hope. The waitress showed up again with a take-out box of calamari, telling me this was compliments of the restaurant given the delay in service. Nice touch. At the end of the meal, however, the front hostess grabbed the box and told me it was for someone else (of course I had already eaten two of the pieces). I tried to ask what she was doing but she could barely speak English. Hope the other folks enjoyed their partial order with my germs in it. At the end of it all, my waitress disappeared. I never saw her again -- serving me or anyone else. I guess she wasn't "OK" afterall. And, with the vanishing service went a vanishing tip -- ZERO. First time I've done that in years. Oh, and did I mention how the habachi chef likes to use his cooking instrument that touches all your food to turn on the dirty fan switch above his head? Yuck! So, friends I have one piece of advice. My First time at a Teppanyaki style restaurant. I came here on my very last day here visiting family (I'm from California) with my Aunts and my Cousin. They had a $5.99 deal for Chicken Teriyaki Hibachi that came with Fried Rice and Soup. The Fried rice was awesome and I still crave it even though I've only had it the one time. The white sauce they provided for dipping was also really good. The only complaint I had was they forgot my Cousin had ordered shrimp and when we told the chef the mistake he only gave her a small serving (she had ordered it as her main dish). The waiter took her order off our check and comp'd us. Fair Enough! Damn. Now I'm craving that fried rice. read more

We had an extremely unpleasant experience at Akita Japanese Steakhouse, Plainfield, IN. My husband arrived first, and though there were only a handful of people in the restaurant, he waited over five minutes before someone even approached him to be seated. The rest (three) of us arrived and were seated by a women I assume was the manager; she took our drink and food order. Several minutes later she seated three people at the other end of the table and too, their order; it was clear we were not together. The drinks and dinner prep were well done and entertaining. However, no wait staff returned to the table during the entire meal to inquire about more drinks or refills on lemonade and water. After we finished dinner, we sat unattended for close to 20 minutes. My husband finally went up to the women who seated and took our order and asked for the check. She brought back a check totally over twice the amount we owed, claiming we said the entire table was together, though as described above, it was clear we were not together! Then she tried to blame it on the person who took our order, so we had to remind her that SHE seated and took our order as well as the other party seated at the table. She proceeded to continue to claim we had entrees that we didn't, and it wasn't until after my husband walked her back through our correct order, she finally came up with a more reasonable total. The service and our treatment at this restaurant was appalling and I would definitely not recommend it. read more

The Hibachi Chef was great, he entertained the kids well enough in our group, but my sushi was very loose and fell apart quite easily. IT tasted slighty better than average, as I got the Boston Roll, Asparagus Roll, California Roll, and Crispy Roll. I was not given enough wasabi or ginger. When I asked to have more, they were wanting to charge me $3.50. I declined. The atmosphere is nice. Clean, open, and quaint, but I wish more people could sit around a hibachi grill. I will go back, but might avoid getting sushi and stick with the hibachi chicken and steak. read more

Coming into this restaurant was a mistake. The service and the organization and management of this restaurant was terrible. We entered and were seated immediately. Our order was placed and then we waited. We saw 4 other parties arrive, get seated and eventually get served. We waited patiently as our order was sushi and it takes time to hand craft a good sushi roll. The other diners had ordered the teppanyaki grill option. As we waited for our meal, we noticed that 5 tables around us had small mistakes in the delivery of their meals. Items not ordered or items ordered for other tables were delivered in error. After 50 minutes of waiting patiently, being assured by the waitstaff at the 30 minute mark, that the food was almost ready, I inquired about the delay. The manager said it was busy and they were filling take-out orders and that sushi takes time. No apology but a gruff excuses delivered to without making eye contact or even facing me. As we had plans, I asked for the check to settle up for the single glass of iced tea. It took an additional 10 minutes to get a bill. As we waited, we learned that part of our order was delivered to another table 30 minutes prior. This implies the kitchen was not backed up but rather nobody knew what was going on. I strongly advise against patronizing this establishment if you plan on doing anything after dinner. There is a good chance you won't get your order and certainly not correctly. read more

My wife and I have been here before so we thought we'd go back....it was an experience of a life time the staff was rude and we sat down before another table and order before them yet they received their drinks and soup and salad before us... When we asked they told us they were working on it .. When people who arrived and ordered after us were getting their food prepared before we ever got our salads my wife asked yet again what the issue was we were then told by the staff if you don't like it you can leave so we did exactly that gathered our belongings and left and don't plan on returning...we don't mind waiting for service when busy however when you don't get service until after the people who arrived after you then are spoken to so rudely it sure makes the drive to Greenwood/Center Grove to House of Tokyo worth it !! read more

This was my second time coming here, and the first had been at least 4 years ago, with a similarly bad experience. Went for a hibachi lunch after church today. There were 3 in our party with a group of 11 in front of us. Our wait wasn't terrible...10-15 minutes or so. Once we were seated, we sat for a good 10 minutes or more before who I assume was the owner finally had to come take our food and drink orders. Then we sat for 40 minutes before our waters even came out. The same lady finally came out and said she thought the waitress brought them. Our salad and soup was out even before the waters and that still took 30 minutes. I get that they were busy but this was just ridiculous. The food was mediocre. I've definitely had better hibachi before. Finally, as we were leaving, a phone call came through and a potential customer was asking about (I assume) ordering some food. The waitress was polite enough to the person on the phone, but as soon as she hung up, started trash talking the caller, right in front of us, other customers. So unprofessional and just added reason why I will not be coming back to this restaurant again. Horrible service and terrible attitude from the wait staff. Enjoy hibachi, but typically do lunch to avoid the dinner $$$ and crowds. Arrived roughly an hour after open, was seated at a table by myself (yeah!) and only two other customers were present...both had eaten and were waiting on their check. Thus, I am the only customer "on deck...." Order was taken, hibachi chef/cook came to my table in maybe 5-10 minutes. So, at this point, I'm only there for a total of 10-15 minutes, which is great... Was told the table/grill had not yet been turned on so it would "be a few minutes" until he could cook, so off he went back to the kitchen. After ten minutes, a large party walked in and they sat them at my table instead of at a different table. So I have now been waiting 25 minutes and I have to wait even longer. The waitress, to her credit, tried to avoid this, but the owner/manager insisted she sit them at my table. So now the cycle starts all over again. Of course it took the large party a bit to order their food (to be expected.) 60 MINUTES LATER I receive my food...when I was the only customer "on deck" for the first 25 minutes. GOOD -------- - Waitress was pleasant** - Cook/Chef was quiet/reserved, which I enjoy over crazy/yelling - Food was decent BAD ----- - Owner/manager with busch league customer service - Many people in the Kitchen screaming/laughing on top of loud music. There is a TV in the main dining area and you could not hear it. I have been coming here since this place opened. In the early years, the food & service were both excellent. Starting going downhill 3 years ago (or so.) I've been "giving it another shot" every six months or so to see if things have changed, but no such luck. They have lost my business for good. There are other options, albeit not great*, in the area that will have to do. *I'm a hibachi junkie and frequent them all over the country. I remember when the Avon/ Plainfield area had 3 very good restaurants for such. I would rate 0 stars if I could. This is the ONLY Japanese steakhouse I have ever been to where they only cook hibachi style meats/veggies at the table... but they don't tell you that. I went in with my sister and ordered some sushi + hibachi stuff. Our soup/salad/sushi came without incident. However, almost 40 minutes passed without them even starting our main meal. When I pointed it out, the cook threw some meat on the grill so fast your head would spin. It was almost if the staff had been coached to act in this manner in the event of any complaints, that way they could still charge me. When I spoke to the manager she threatened to call the police on us if we did not pay. The place was not at all busy, but people that arrived a good 15 minutes after us were eating as we waited. The manager then proceeded to tell us that they only cook meals when the hibachi tables are full. So in the event that a small party wants to sit away from a bunch of strangers, they basically have to wait until who knows when for their meals. I was in the Army for 10 years and have been all over the place... eaten at countless numbers of these types of restaurants, and this is the only one that does not have the capability to cook for you in the back kitchen. Normally, I would have taken that in stride - ordering something else if need be. But they didn't say one word about the possible wait, and proceeded to threaten to call the police if I did not pay for food I never even received. read more

My husband and I went to Akira last night--one of the few nights out we have been privileged enough to have as parents of three--to celebrate our anniversary. The restaurant was somewhat busy, but we were seated at an empty table immediately. Our server was pleasant, and drinks were delivered promptly, so kudos to him! Food, on the other hand, appeared to be a scarcity. My husband ordered a $15 sushi roll, and another $16 sushi combo, which you would have thought would've thrilled the owner! Instead, the owner / sushi chef threw a complete primadonna hissy--apparently telling the servers there were too many sushi orders--, got in his car, and left! Luckily--an hour into our visit--our server was kindly enough to tell us about 'the crisis,' as he called it. We decided to leave, and paid for our drinks (which, in my opinion, should've been complimentary), warning incoming patrons as we exited. The woman at the register was apologetic, but there wasn't much that could calm our anger at having been denied our order because it was 'too much' at 7:30 on a special occasion Saturday night. So, if you want a place to sit for a long time with no food, this is it! If you want an actual meal and general hospitality, though, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. read more
