I walk into a huge collection of beautiful and colorful fabrics from well known designers and brands. To the right side, I walked into another huge area with a vast array of high quality fabrics. It was so hard to choose! Besides fabrics, there was walls with quilt supplies and books. They host classes and have a long arm on site to quilt the backing. The walls and shelves displayed many of their products. Unfortunately, some of the fabrics featured were no longer were available though the instructions were. I even offered to buy the display but that was not possible. I went on a week day so street parking was possible. The owners were helpful and knowledgeable and clearly take pride in their shop. The fabric prices were typical of quilt shops and there were some sales. This shop is on my favorite list and I look forward to coming back soon.

My granddaughter has it now after her Dad learned on it too, when he was young. Because of aging and vision loss, I no longer do much sewing, just the quick small repair using extra lights and magnification. Also I find I often need to "remodel" an item that I bought with the plan to use an alteration to the construction. That is what led me to Sewbo today as there are no more multi craft stores left near me. I prefer quality parts and local ownership so the loss of one chain was really no big deal. But the remaining fabric store, one of my long time favorites, does not carry the sort of thing I was looking for. It specializes in high-end classic fabrics and has a talented staff in more formal design and construction. It pains me to no longer be able to support that business which I had for nearly 50 years. Somewhere along in recent times, Sewbo opened quite close to me but in a rather obscure corner of a shopping center we use regularly for other things. For those confused by its address on Baseline, know that it is on the "back" (south side) of the Basemar shopping center, behind Dougs Diner but with its own parking accessed from 27th Way which connects 28th St to Broadway. You can turn into the store access from 27th Way next to the Core Yoga building. With the reserved parking spaces and before lunch, we had no trouble taking an empty space. Not only does the store carry many choices in contemporary fabrics, they carry lots of notions like zippers and threads. They also teach classes, even for children, which is a great summer project. I wish my granddaughter was here to take one. I found exactly the zipper I was looking for, their colors and lengths stock was expansive. The price was minimal though it appears to be high quality too. A staff member greeted us immediately upon entering and was so helpful in finding the exact type zipper I wanted.. I wish even more that I still was sewing regularly as it is so nice to have another comprehensive quality local source for projects.

The genesis of the business is the ranch in Elizabeth, Colorado where the owners have a herd of 60+ prize-winning alpacas. Much of the wool in the shop comes from this herd, but the owners seek out and represent other local and international craft yarn producers and dyers. Things are a little disorganized and the inventory is limited, but the yarns and raw wools are very unique and interesting. The shop also sells and services equipment for spinning and weaving and offers a roster of intensive classes. This is a very unusual shop, even for the yarn business. Don't let the strange location put you off. This is a great resource for anyone interested in quality yarn or spinning and weaving. I took a class fromPatty and we were chatting about quilt customers. The conversation went along as I stated that in my years of operating a quilt store in Arizona that I only had one check bounce. That customer was is in my store with cash in her hand before I was even aware that her check had bounced. I also stated that quilters are a honest group of women. Patty stated that she had one check bounce. She also stated the ladies Name. That is so unprofessional. I took two Christmas quilts in before I left for a family reunion. I went over the details with Trish. It was a good four weeks when Trish called me to let me know that one of the quilts was completed and ready to pick up. Both quilts were identical, I thought that having the computer set up for one that the second one would be put on the machine next. When I picked up the first quilt I paid for both quilts. I was thinking that the second one would be next. I was so wrong. Trish had stated that she was going to have a procedure on for her knee and would be out for a few days. A few days turned into a week. My associate called me excited because her quilt was completed. Her quilt was taken in after I had taken my two quilts in. I called the shop and spoke to Trish who let me know that my second quilt would be going on next. Should be ready soon, after all she needed two full days to quilt my quilt. I called the shop again and was put off again. I had already paid in full to have the quilting done. I called and Patty answered in her sweet manner. I told her I was coming in and picking up my quilt. That I wanted a refund on top of it. I told her I would not say a word in the store. Which I did not open my mouth. I will not do anymore business with Fabric Play.

We went there because my mom was visiting from out of town and one of her sewing students was needing a few different pieces of wool for her "Make it with Wool" project for the year. We brought in the swatches of what had already been purchased for the project and they were able to pull quite a few wool fabric options that were beautiful. They not only pulled this fabric and placed in the best lighting for pictures for us to send back to her student, but also gave some swatches for my mom to take back to Indiana for the final decision. Not all of the selections we found were available in their online store, but they were willing to take an order over the phone and ship it to her. I have a good feeling this may start to be an annual tradition. She usually selects fabrics at Mood in New York, but the extra level of service provided may make her permanently switch!
