Akel dental... The lab they use has terrible color matching. Took our son to them for a replacement "flapper". His old one, color matched perfectly, but had broken. The new tooth didn't match, so we came back for a special appointment to compare color chips and make sure it was right. Unfortunately, when it came in, it still didn't match the surrounding teeth or the color chip. I understand that this is lab quality control, but the dentist has taken the stance that there's nothing more they can do. Will post photos... *edit this is almost too outrageous to believe but I just received a call from a blocked number who said " is this ### ####'s dad? this is a message from Dr akel you're a f****** a******, get lost, good luck trying to find a new dentist" seriously can't make this up. This is a rare occasion where you see one star ratings and you question them. Well, in this case the one star ratings are well earned. I went here a few years back because I didn't have dental insurance but I had money. I had to have two teeth extracted. I had pain when I had open heart surgery. The pain I experienced here was equal to, if not worse than my surgery on my heart. I would avoid this place at all costs!!!! I don't know if it was because they didn't give me enough, Novacaine or not. I don't have to worry about it anymore I have dentures. Thank the good Lord above. read more

I do not normally write reviews. However after seeing so many negative reviews, I felt the need to provide a new review with my experience. I had previously been going to a "chain" dentist due to my insurance. I was very unsatisfied with them. After switching insurance to get options to go to non-chain places, I was able to get an appointment with Akel. The appointment for a new patient was within a reasonable time. During my first visit, I was able to get both my check up and deep cleaning (SRP) which was not something I had been able to do at many other places. This was an unexpected surprise. The service was very good and the staff was amazing. To top it off, the cost was well below any chain dentist I have previously been to. read more

After having work done at a different dentist, I stopped in to this office to see if they were able to help me. My regular dentist was not very good, just out of dental school. They did x-rays and found out the teeth he had filled were not done properly...and when I asked about a tooth I thought had a cavity, was told there wasn't one. So I went to doc Akel, he said yes there was a cavity, and all 4 front teeth had to have work. I did as he asked and had root canal done, he then said he could fix my front teeth. Now I have had a terrible smile my whole life, every dentist said they could not fix, so I didn't get my hopes up. All the work he wanted to do on 4 teeth, was the same price for 1 at my regular dentist, so I said okay. When he had finally finished...I looked in mirror and cried! I had straight front teeth for the first time in my life! I will never go back to another "chain" dental place ever again. Dr Akel did what no other doctor was able to do. His staff was incredible ! They all were sooo sweet! And took great care of me, even though I was terrified from being through those other dental places, his staff kept me calm. I actually look forward to seeing him again to fix my other teeth, but right now..I'm enjoying the new teeth and smiling for the first time knowing they look great! My son's appointment was at 10am, so I arrived at 9:20am. The lady gives me the paper to fill out and tells me to wait in the car and they will call when it's his time. I walk into the office at 10:40am and asked what is going on. The girl at the front desk tells me he can't be seen till she has the paperwork. Ok so why would you tell me to go to the car and wait for you to call for his appointment!!! I can't stand stupid people....I will be finding a new office. I'm editing this review because I just received a phone call from the office manager who just told me I was stupid for listening to her front office. I was told not to come back in till they called. I've also talked to past patients who had issues with the office manager speaking to them very rudely!!!!!!! read more

I have never had to make such a drastic alteration of review. After leaving my initial excellent review, I found that things went downhill with the next appointments. I was upsold on many things I didn't need and that it turned out later my good insurance covered none of (deep cleanings, etc.). I tried to resolve and was met with rudeness and conflicting answers by staff. Also, I hardly ever saw the dentist himself. He was training one girl and while she was nice and apologetic about having trouble with the procedure, something with the string she was using, I couldn't understand why the adhesive smelled and tasted so toxic. It was strong, like a salad dressing but ten times worse and it made me sick to my stomach for days afterwards. They lost out on my business due to this and the mishandling of my husband's crowns as well. Sad. My teeth were good, now I hardly have any enamel and my regular government dentist who I couldn't get in to see because they were too booked at that time chastised me that I would pay for deep cleanings and other needed work. Now when I eat, the surface of my teeth is poor and food sticks to what is left of my enamel. read more

Akel is just after the money. I've been to several dentist over the years. I've never had a problem with my gums. During my exam they pushed so deep while measuring my gums that they bleed. My teeth don't normally bleed and I floss all the time. So then they tell me my gum readings measurements are bad and that I need to schedule deep cleaning of my teeth every few months. I told them my feelings about the improper exam so the dentist changed the cleanings to fewer times per year. What a rip off. I never went back. read more

BUYER BEWARE!!!! When you pay a higher price for service you expect 3 things, 1. Quality he delivered a good product, but it did not fit and never having had dentures I did not know what to expect. I was handed them with a baggie with some sample adhesive cream but no instructions or guidance or expectations. And wearing them made me feel like Mr. Ed. 2. Warranty he didn't deliver when asked because he didn't deliver on my expectations or the timetable we established When we started we laid out a timetable and bill and I paid it in cash up front and when it came time for the next phase he handed me a bill for another 3,000 dollars which was never informed of I felt buyers remorace which leads me to 3. Satisfaction guarantee and I was not by any means satisfied. Product was delivered and only usable for 3 days and when asked for a refund I was told he delivered the product and would not give me a refund. I ended up going elsewhere and found a better price with a better fit and I do not feel like Mr. Ed. If I would have known upfront about the higher price tag I might have shopped around for pricing and asked more questions because this was a totally new experience to me, but because I was surprised in the middle of the deployment with it, I was left holding the bag. Again, I would be weary of doing business and shop around first and make sure you know what you are getting and what he is promising to deliver. read more

So far everyone here is good. My only thing is years ago I had to get a crown (in another city) it stayed for 23 years. Then getting a new crown from Akel I was happy with the crown but yesterday after only about 2 years it fell out again . Why can't anyone make it stay like I had before? I would not go to this dentist unless you want to end up looking like you had been beaten up like I did. He was so rough my face was black and blue afterwards for over a week. I wish there was a way to post the pictures on here. I had read several negative reviews but he was the only dentist on my insurance close by so I still went to him. I regret it. I was so sore, swollen and bruised afterwards. I have never had this problem after any dentist procedures before. read more

It begins with the lady at the front desk besides lacking common sense she is nasty and argumentative. From there we go for a xray but not so fast this woman feels that texting is more important than her job. Now let's go to the chair This dentist has zero communication he said 1 sentence and ran out of the room before I could ask a question. This is the first Review its a warning not to go there. The staff is not qualified to be in a professional office I have read some of the other reviews I recommend you do the same. Ok, so this is the 2 nd or 2 rx time we have been here. Then1 st time the office staff say at the front desk talking about other patients. Everyone could hear. Nice HIPPA LAWS!!! Today I go there bc my daughter rebroke her front tooth. Well, after waiting in the waiting room for over an hour. They take her in, 30 minutes later my daughter comes out and says come back. So, I go back and there is the blonde headed hygienist who tells me she needs crown or cap for her tooth. Well I said okay when can it be done. They said well her insurance needs pre authorization. I said ok how long. They tell me 2 plus More weeks. So I say what are we doing about the tooth now? She said nothing. I said we cannot leave an 11 year old with a cracked tooth. I've had a friend who recently went to Akel dental who needed a root canal and his mom was in the waiting room and she heard the front desk girls and other person laughing at him needing extensive treatment. His mom was telling me that it was so unprofessional. I've never personally been there before though. He ended up going to a different dental office on Cortez who was very nice. read more

If I could give one star I would. They repaired a chip in my sons front tooth. It fell out three days later while he was drinking water. They proceeded to tell me they couldn't fix for a month. I made them take him sooner. After the second repair, it fell out 2 hours later.... I had to have a family member take him back for a third time , and now the same day so it was fixed before his first day of high school. They gave us till 4:15. My son was there by 4, and they still took in several other patients and made him and my family wait till 4:30. So I called and made it known that was unfair to us since due to their poor workmanship, we have now wasted twice the gas & time. According to our friend who the office was not aware was with my family, after I got off the phone with them, the office girls proceeded to complain about my son & I unprofessionally within earshot of patients in the waiting room. We will not only never be using them again, but I wanted any potential patients to know that you may have to fight for anyone there to do their job... Good luck with that. Wish I could give NO stars!!! This place and dentist is a JOKE!!!!! The dentist was very rude to not only myself but to my 14yr daughter. This office does NOT allow parents to go to the back with their children and when the child is done, the dentist doesn't even explain anything to the parent, the nasty, snotty office staff try to explain the work that needs to be done!!!!! For someone who understands what the dentist is saying, this method would be okay, but for a child, it is NOT!!! After my daughter came out to the waiting room she told me that the dentist was nasty and rude to her and that they didn't do anything AGAIN (2nd visit since November that we have waited months for). I told her unforunetly with Medicaid there is Shi**y dental services and I will have better dental insurance at the end of the year where we can find a better dentist. The office staff went back and told the dentist what I has said and he came flying up front and asked me if I called his office Shi**y. I said yes and he began to scream at me telling me to get out and don't come back. I told him I'd love to but I had another child in the back still. My other daughter (16) came out 2 seconds later (they stopped in the middle of her appointment and didn't tell me ANYTHING about her teeth) and he continued to scream at me to get out and don't come back!!! I visited the Tampa office and had the worst experience ever! First off I purchased a Groupon and when I called they said they weren't taking them anymore- well Groupon is still under the impression you do because they are still available. After having to argue they finally gave me an appointment for cleaning and ex ray I pre paid for. I get to the office she asks me if it's in my name and how much I paid for it- I guess to verify I actually purchased it (even though I obviously did, have the voucher on my phone). Actual visit, so unorganized and horrible communication. They took my ex rays then made me wait 30 mins to see the doctor. So I sat for 30 min and doctor finally came and went over treatment I needed. The doctor actually was informative and had good bedside manor. Then I waited for the hygienist another 20 min. This is where I thought my cleaning would begin but no. She just came to check my gums. She left and I waited again for another 20 min for the office manager to come over and give me the pricing of my treatment plan and tell me I would now be getting a cleaning today. WHAT!? I had just been there for 1.5 hours to be told I need to come back for a cleaning!!!! I have a four month old at home and work full time, my time is precious! Horrible communication and the manager was very rude. She said I could get my cavities filled that day (of course because then they get to collect money from me) but no time for the cleaning. (They had No info in the ad) when i asked where they located and which practice this was....they got snotty and sarcastic with me. At one point they actually told me to "Go To HELL" Because i politly declined the interview due to their unprofessionalism. I took my children for the first time June of last year for routine cleaning. We did wait a long time but since we were new patients I said nothing. The gal came out each time she needed permission to do whatever special thing they thought was needed. She also said my daughter needed a tooth pulled, I knew she did so I said OK. The tooth WAS NOT LOOSE, the adult tooth was growing into the gum instead. So, with NO numbing of any sort he pulled an 11 year olds tooth, she said it took him 4 twists/tugs to get it out, then just left the room. My daughter didn't scream or cry, she didn't tell me until the car ride home. I called when we got home, the nurse checked the chart, saw no mention of a numbing agent. She said she'd speak to him and call back. When she called back she said he didn't deem it necessary. I told her the tooth was not loose and I DEEMED IT NECESSARY. She in a snarky tone said, well, ma'am, HE'S the doctor. I cut her off and said I'm the mother and I !@#!! deem it necessary!!! and hung up. read more
