She teaches in a one room school house that serves less than 10 kids , K-12. What year is it over there? 1850! On that note, cell service isn't a problem. I think that's worth noting! Ferry employee Nicole was super nice and told me a lot about the island on the way over. She works the ticket booth on the mainland, but also serves as the bartender on board. Prudence Island can be a day retreat , or you can try to rent a cottage. I went for the afternoon. On Thursdays in September, they run a 1:30 ferry. I then took the 4:30 back. I wish I had rented a bike so I could have covered more ground.

Today, for instance, the bus #1113 was over two hours late. Frequently, this is because they have a completely new driver assigned for that day. Additionally, the bus has a tendency to show up early and drive off, or not show at all. The driver actually lies about the time that they reach a bus stop. My daughter was verbally abused by another kid on the bus. When we complained to the branch manager (a certain Ms. Lillian Benoit), she merely said that she would pass along the complaint to a higher authority. There was no mention of follow-up, neither were there any efforts to assure us that my daughter would be safe on this bus. The least I had expected was that the other kid would be made to change buses. The previous bus service (operated by a different bus company) was fine. Since we were made to switch to this bus company, every day has been an adventure (and not the pleasant kind!). If anyone in the RI government is listening, PLEASE take action against this bus company.

21st September 2026 Americas Cup Avenue…read more Newport, RI Cloudy 65°F Autumn arrived early on this last day of summer for us Northesterners accompanied with a little drizzle of rain and ocean mist. Thus, Hubby and I decided to take the 3 hour Viking Trolley Tour of the cottages of Newport along the Atlantic coast. We were lucky to have one of the best tour guides, Dominic, who filled us in with very detailed history of every mansion, along with his hilarious sense of humor, plus a little local gossip of the past millionaires, and current billionaires who are buying up the formidable coastal properties. Did you know both Presidents, JFK and Eisenhower were buddies who had homes in Newport across the road from one another and frequently golfed together? Also, September 12th 1953, Jack Kennedy's wedding to Jacqueline Bouvier had 1500 guests in attendance here in Newport. The locals called the colossal wedding a "festival" ! I definitely recommend getting a ticket to this tour, then decide what you will see on foot the following days. Enjoy!

The ferry is an excellent way to visit the Rose Island lighthouse and the downtown area of Newport, RI. The ferry staff was very friendly, professional, and helpful. They suggested to use some local favorite restaurants, and other sightseeing attractions while we were visiting the area.

Perfect day trip--great way to explore Newport and Jamestown…read more While winging it around Newport this past weekend, our thoughtful server at the White Horse Tavern recommended we check out the Jamestown Newport Ferry--and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. We arrived casually at the dock around 10 AM and hopped on without much planning. Our first stop was Fort Adams, where we enjoyed some surprisingly interesting historical sights. The timing was perfect--about an hour and ten minutes later, the next ferry arrived and took us to Rose Island Lighthouse. That visit was a standout. The guide was excellent, and we were fascinated to learn you can actually stay overnight at the lighthouse--definitely something we're planning to do in the future. (Fair warning: if you're not a fan of birds or geese, you might want to skip this stop.) Next, we cruised over to Jamestown, where the ferry crew recommended the Narraganset tavern and dinner at JB's on the Water. Enjoyed both. We were back in Newport by around 7 PM, totally relaxed, and without ever feeling rushed. Fine people, friendly staff, no stress--just a great way to experience the bay. I highly recommend the Jamestown Newport Ferry if you're visiting the area.

We all decided to take a tour of the harbor on a shuttle. It's a 55 minute tour round trip if you…read moredon't get off. It makes six stops. You can get off at each stop and make a whole day of it for just one price. Adults $12, children under twelve $6. There's a lot to see in the harbor. One stop in particular is Fort Adams, a Fort commissioned in the 18th century, now the home of the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals. Pretty views and vistas throughout. Our tour guides were very informative. My suggestion would be to equip them with microphones so hearing is easier due to many maritime noises.
