21st September 2026 Americas Cup Avenue Newport, RI Cloudy 65°F Autumn arrived early on this last day of summer for us Northesterners accompanied with a little drizzle of rain and ocean mist. Thus, Hubby and I decided to take the 3 hour Viking Trolley Tour of the cottages of Newport along the Atlantic coast. We were lucky to have one of the best tour guides, Dominic, who filled us in with very detailed history of every mansion, along with his hilarious sense of humor, plus a little local gossip of the past millionaires, and current billionaires who are buying up the formidable coastal properties. Did you know both Presidents, JFK and Eisenhower were buddies who had homes in Newport across the road from one another and frequently golfed together? Also, September 12th 1953, Jack Kennedy's wedding to Jacqueline Bouvier had 1500 guests in attendance here in Newport. The locals called the colossal wedding a "festival" ! I definitely recommend getting a ticket to this tour, then decide what you will see on foot the following days. Enjoy! read more

The tour guide, Tom was almost non-intelligible. If I heard every fifth word he said that was being generous. On more than one occassion he rudely told everyone on the trolly/bus to be silent so he could do his work. Was the tour interesting, sure if you want to see the lives of the robber barons of the 19th and 20th century. More than a bit of a tourist trap. read more

I highly recommend a trolley tour through Newport. There is so much history here that you might miss if you don't take a formal tour to get the details. Our tour guide and driver was quite funny and very informative. Getting tickets online was easy and meeting at the pick up spot was also very easy. I've now done Viking tours twice - once for just the trolley tour, and then this second time we hopped off to see The Breakers. Our tour guide Ray - a Newport native and retired middle school history teacher - was super. It was nice to not only hear the history of the town, but to also see the field where he played Little League, and the bar where his grandparents had their first date haha. It is clear that Ray loves his job, as he's been doing it since college. The tour is fantastic - lots of history while you sit in an air-conditioned trolley with windows on all sides. He was very knowledgeable and shared many interesting historical facts as well as a few stories from his childhood growing up in Newport. We had great views of all the buildings and the ocean. He showed us some places to watch the sunset, as well. We toured The Breakers and it was breathtaking! We will definitely take another tour with Viking when we return to Newport, RI! read more

We took the tour this morning and it was unorganized and overbooked. There were two buses, one was supposed to let people off at the mansions and the other was just the trolley tour. Due to an office scheduling issue, the buses were a mix of people, and it was confusing when boarding. We finally got on the bus, and we had to sit opposite the driver in very uncomfortable seats where you couldn't stretch your legs so our legs fell asleep but the worse part was in when he told us to turn right to see something we had to stand up and turn our entire bodies around in cramped seats or miss out, we chose to miss out bc our feet were asleep from being crammed into the seat! It was wrong, they should not overbook these tours so that all people get decent and comfortable seats. When people got off at the Breakers we were able to sit in the vacant seats which was night and day. Our guide was wonderful, knowledgeable and apologetic. I want a refund for what we had to put up with for 2/3 of the ride, it wasn't fair or right. read more

Very informative tour today. I took the trolley around Newport and was dropped off at The Breakers. My tour guide was super friendly and informative about the houses and buildings around town. The Breakers was a quick tour, the only thing I found that would be nicer is if we had maybe another 20 mins to roam around here. I pretty much zoomed through not knowing how long it was, just wanted to make sure I made it back to the trolley on time. All in all, very good tour. read more

We took the highlight tour and had Ray as our tour guide. It was the best part of our trip to Newport. I highly recommend you do this early in your trip to get an idea of the things to go back to and see. Not only did he tell us about history which was amazing, but he had lots of personal insights about the area. He told us places to go for lunch, places to see the sunset and sunrise, as well as places to park to get away from the crowds especially in the summertime. So glad I booked with Viking Tours of Newport for my niece's 8th birthday adventure! On the summer day we picked it was rainy and muggy, so the trolley was a huge relief since it is enclosed with air conditioning! The fun seats, the views, and the driver, Ron, all kept my niece interested while us adults listened to the narration... who knew there was so much history and celebrity life in Newport!? There are a TON of cool things to learn! When booking our trolley ticket we opted for the bundle Viking offers with the Breakers Mansion tour. I HIGHLY recommend this as my niece was soooo excited to get off the trolley at the "biggest house" and see inside. BONUS: it us the only mansion with a children's tour - so it is a fantastic combo ticket if you travel with kids! The whole excursion was about 3 hours - just the right amount of time before we got hungry! Driver Ron suggested a nice restaurant with a kid friendly menu and it was the perfect way to end the tour. Since the weather was so bad, I reached out to the Viking office for further indoor suggestions in Newport for kids. Kirtley and her team really pulled through for us and within minutes we had a list of indoor locations to try! This went so above and beyond since their suggestions had nothing to do with their trolley. We finished our afternoon nice and dry at the arcade and having ice cream. We are all so happy with our experience, we must have smiled all day, despite the rain. We felt totally taken care of! I Definitely recommend Viking Tours when in Newport! read more

I went on a tour of Newport to see the historic homes, beaches and other points of interest. I really liked the tour, and the bus driver did an excellent job narrating and driving. The trolley was cute on the outside but the seats were uncomfortable, there was nothing to hold on to in order to steady yourself. Unfortunately even though it was advertised as an open air trolley, many of the windows didn't open and the air conditioning wasn't adequate and was so loud that it was hard to hear the bus driver at times. I did enjoy it however. It was about 2 hours and that was decent for the 25 dollar fee. read more

This was the tour recommended by the Visitor's Center. While I had seen a few options for trolley tours this once seemed to have the most enthusiastic reviews. I chose the basic 90 minute tour that did not include any mansion visits. After parking at the nearby garage ($10 pre-paid for all day parking), I strolled into the Visitor's Center and easily purchased my ticket before hopping on the trolley parked out front. I would recommend a seat on the right hand side if you are really into taking pictures of sites on or near the water, although both sides have great views and the driver encouraged us to get up and move around when he made his stops. The guide/driver, who is a local, had a lot of interesting information on the history of Newport, Jackie O's ties to the town, the mansions of the Gilded Age, the Astors and Vanderbilts, and some of the "new money" that have purchased mansions recently. It was a relaxing ride with beautiful views that took us through all the main streets of Newport, including the shopping area, the mansions along the coast with views from the back and front (Bellevue Ave), historical buildings, and favorite bars and restaurants. Those that chose to take this tour with a stop at the Breakers were dropped off and provided with instructions on the pick up time/location. This is a great option if only one mansion visit is planned. The tour ended back at the Visitor's Center. I would recommend this tour at the beginning of your visit for a general overview of Newport. It helps to get a lay of the land to see what's what and where things are located. read more

Due to COVID, had to wear a mask the whole time and every other seat was blocked off. Trip was very informative and the driver friendly and knowledgeable. Driver did make a stop for everyone to get off the trolley for a 10 minute stop. Wish it had been near a public restroom for all the morning coffee drinkers, but otherwise would definitely recommend. read more

A great scenic ride with interesting stories behind the city of Newport. I can honestly say that it was good money spent. The mansions were very beautiful, the Marble House was impressive but The Breakers was magnanimous! Our tour guide was outstanding, he had vast knowledge of information concerning the history of Newport. He was entertaining for sure and funny. He takes his time and does not rush to get the tour over with, he stops frequently to make sure you don't miss anything. The only negative thing I could think of was the seats were a bit uncomfortable, other than that it was a very good experience. I think our tour guide's name was Jim, anyways.... Great ride for a big group of people and great rates too!! The trolley arrived 30 minutes early on our wedding day to ensure they'd be here on time, which I appreciated. The place we were taking our first look photos was sort of hard to get to so I explained to the driver as we drove and he was at ease and followed my directions well. He took us to our first look location, the ceremony and then brought us to our reception hall. And through the pouring rain and verbal directions our ride was smooth and comfortable. We partied on with our cooler of drinks and platter of sandwiches! Make sure to bring snacks for long days! I would absolutely use them again! read more

Viking Tours--Bait And Switch! We took what was supposed to be a "trolley" tour on Saturday, Feb 16 2013 from the Visitors Center. Prior to buying the tickets at the counter, we saw all of these nice photographs of a beautiful red trolley pictured everywhere, including on the walls and in brochures. Once we made our purchase and went outside to board the trolley, we were told to board an ugly white small transit bus. It even had a bathroom....we smelled it the entire way! Although the tour was just :"okay", I am baffled how Viking can justify charging $25 bucks per person for this "bait and switch" of a 10-mile tour, when we purchased a 70-mile ticket from Boston to Newport for less money. Not worth the price and FALSE ADVERTISING!!! read more

My girlfriends rented a private van to take us from Newport to Providence from my bridal brunch. Kirtley was great during the booking process! The van was prompt, clean and the driver Joel was great! He made sure we got everywhere we were going on time, escorted us on and off the van and made sure we had anything we needed! I highly recommended them to anyone! read more

Just did the Viking Tour of Newport "Narrated Grand Mansion Trolley Tour", with Ann as a tour guide. It was top-notch. Ann was a great tour guide, and the tour showed a lot of the great sights of Newport. We also got to tour the Breakers mansion for a little more than an hour. If you want an overview of Newport, this is a great tour to go on for a $41 adult ticket. read more

This was not the greatest experience unfortunately. The trolley was supposed to be air conditioned. However, it was not. The air conditioning would not impact my rating but our driver was not the most pleasant tour guide I've had and was very muffled through the audio on this tour. It's unfortunate because these tours are usually fun and informational, we got neither. We could not understand a lot of this tour due to the audio. Needless to say, we won't be using this service next time. There are probably fantastic tour guides, ours didn't smile or greet anyone coming on board. read more

Took this tour with a group of 25. We were able to arrange for the trolley to pick us up at the Naval Station gate. What great service. The price was also a bargain. The tour guide had great knowledge of the city, and was very interesting. Definitely Recommend! read more

We really enjoyed our tour of Newport via Viking Tours. Our tour guide, Ron, provided a great summary of the history of Newport, was very good at identifying/describing all the historical and interesting features that we passed, and had lots of great stories of a native of Newport. We really felt we had all the information that we needed to get us started to enjoy and discover the rest of Newport on our own. There were many streets that were so busy and narrow that it would have been impossible for a tourist to both drive and soak in their surroundings. The tour that we took (#3) included 2 Newport Mansions of our choice. We visited Breakers & Marble House. While we could have visited those mansions on our own it made it so easy to just get on and off the trolley within a block of the front doors of each. My only word of advice to other tourists is to sit on the right hand side of the trolley. It was the side that seemed to always be the 'right' side to see anything on the water. read more

Everyone just loved all his stories & personal accounts of people and places where he grew up, right here in the middle of it There was literally no break in his commentary except to breathe! Our tour guide, Ron, was so full of local history and went out of his way to make the tour interesting for everyone who was there. We bought the package that included tickets to Marble House. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone! The only thing that I would do differently is give myself more time since Newport seems so full of interesting and diverse things to do. read more
