I have been going to airgas to swap a 5 lb food grade CO2 canister. Between the last time I visited and today, the price went from $64.62 to $91.56. The price of CO2 went from $36.66 to $50.04. The Hazmat charge went from $16.83 to $28.25. The arbitrary price hike for the hazmat charge on top of the increase of cost of goods feels like adding insult to injury. I will no longer be patronizing airgas. read more

Know before you go! I zipped down to airgas after reading these reviews about how "friendly" everyone was there. When I read "friendly" in a review of a business I think "helpful", I mean chit chat is fine, but when I am shopping I expect whoever works somewhere to know more than a little bit about the products they sell, and also, to be able to pleasantly transfer that information to the customer. So, back to me zipping down there after reading all the 5 star reviews. Thinking to myself I want to make carbonated water, like I have seen on you tube. With a co2 tank and a regulator (and I assume some sort of adapter?). So cheerfully I go up to the counter and tell the man "I want to carbonate water." Man behind counter (MBC) says "Oh No, we don't do that here.". Me "No, I want to use co2 to carbonate my own water", MBC ":No, we don't do that." Me "You don't sell co2 tanks and regulators" MBC "Yeah we sell tanks and regulators." Me "Great, how much would that cost." MBC "$300", Me, "$300? for a 5 pound tank and a regulator?", MBC "Oh, for a 5 gallon tank, $200" Me "OK, thanks anyway". So, is that the going rate for a 5 gallon co2 tank and regulator for carbonation? $200? Seems to me the MBC did not want to be bothered. Its not like he was busy either, it was just me. The phone did ring during our brief conversation, but it seemed to me that the guy either did not know that people used co2 tanks for that, or he did not want to be bothered with helping me figure out what I needed. Either way 2 stars (generous if you ask me). I give 2 stars because it did appear that if you knew exactly what you needed you could go in there and buy it. I went in to get a pair of welding gloves for pyrotechnic work. They had the mediums I was looking for, which is both unusual and awesome. This is mostly a welding supply and gas store, but they have a few random things like padlocks and flashlights and fall protection gear. Not really a place to go browse, but a tradesman's store. You don't need a business license or anything, but they're not really set up for Joe handyman to come in and ask a million questions about his weekend project, either. They're right near the new T-Third line, which is convenient if you're getting little things. I don't expect that muni would look too kindly on you taking an acetylene tank on a train, though. read more

This place is great! They had all of the welding supplies I needed, a good variety of welding helmets and George. George was very helpful and patient and made me feel comfortable in this "manly" shop. Being on a budget, I was pretty cost conscious so was a bit embarrassed to keep asking the price of everything (nothing is marked) but George was friendly, answered all of my questions and in the end I was pleasantly surprised with the total cost of my items. Always triple check that the guy knows which gas to put in your tank. Even with a properly labeled tank and label, I got 20% oxygen for my 100% argon tank. Wouldn't give a refund, either. Not exactly what you want to deal with when you're already half way to your job site. And definitely don't buy any of their "recommended" products. Always buy the name brand (3m, etc) vs Airgas' brands in the store: their's last about 1/3 the time as the 3m products do. read more

Fair prices here, they helped my to find what I was looking for(auto darkening lense and some gloves for welding). When I walked in, it looked like they were still restocking the somewhat empty shelves though. I needed a 20-pound CO2 tank for a home carbonator. Walked in, asked for one, and they sold it to me. In and out in about ten minutes! Note: they don't do tank deposits any more, so if you don't own a tank, you'll have to buy one. The first fill is free with the purchase of a tank. I found that although the tank costs more here, the free gas fill and lack of shipping charges (they're heavy!) mean you break-even. Also, it's easy to get to from 280; I went just before 5 on a Friday afternoon and there was no traffic to speak of on the freeway. read more

So I value business partners who have professional level capabilities, the spirit of partnership in their customer approach (education, empathy for avant garde priorities, superlative and low-cost solutions alike for different scenarios...), and are inviting and welcoming to my "single-idiot-hobby-needs" B2C spending agenda. I had been aligning myself with another welding supply in the city over the last six months, until I finally made time to wander into Airgas. WOW! What a wonderful experience! They have 2x the inventory physically on hand to consider, introduced me to a new product (amazing $114 new on the market auto-darkening helmet functionally on par with my $400 digital elite), entertained my unavoidable last minute sneak in the door just at closing time (I have an office job you see....) I'm not usually picking partners on price alone, if so I would probably find an Internet answer like Amazon for at least my consumables... But I also suspect their style of whitelabel branded Airgas abrasives, wire and operating supplies will prove cost-effective. There's a reason I use local suppliers with brick and mortar presence when I do... Sometimes I get the "expertise and perspective" I seek and other times I don't. With Airgas... I've newly found my partner in welding and am enthralled. Seriously... you have to check this place out. It may or may not be your type of supplier as it is mine... but it's certainly a shiny example of solution provider that's way beyond simple retail seller of goods... Super excited to find a supplier who looks at the long time horizon and seeks to PARTNER with it's customers, not take from the customer in a predatory way... RIPOFF. They charged me $40 to swap out an empty 10 lb. CO2 tank when Atlas gas in Berkeley on 6th St. charges only $20. Then they wanted $9 for Teflon tape. Um, newsflash, folks, Home Depot charges $1.09 for Teflon tape. They were totally unapologetic about this, too. The guy was like "yeah, well we don't make the prices." Apparently, you don't make the customers happy, either. I'm never coming back. read more
