Their billing system is obtuse and opaque. Long story short, I had a credit due to me that wasn't getting applied. Their own customer service couldn't make sense of their system and promised a call back from the credit department. This went on for months. Had to finally call and email the boss of the person in the credit department who wasn't responding to me. Credit rep finally got back to me and said to let her know the next time I ordered so that the credit was applied. Did that. She says credit was applied and sends screenshot showing our account with credit on her side. On my side, I'm still getting bills for full amount. They need to change their billing system. read more

When I replied after being gone for almost 3yrs the manager Larry, made it personal and the fact that he personally told me that if I ever wanted to return to give him a call. He then also sat with me during my lunch and told me that he would hire me back if I wanted to return, so can you believe that he ghosted me and when I applied I was told i didn't have the qualifications for the job. If they only had good customer service, they'd be the best choice by a long shot because they have all the welding, and safety products you could ever need or want. What happened? Was it a particular visit? No, not really. It happens almost every time. What is really happening? Well it's the lack of personal customer service when I walk in or call. They are not rude at all, but I've been in and out of this place for 20+ years and they've been great at NOT offering help. Asking for stuff they don't have in stock, fugget about it! Especially over the phone, you won't get a call back from them even when you leave your number. Should have wrote 'em off long ago, huh. Well, when your choices are limited what do ya do? I purchased two refill canisters of propane at Walmart in Escondido. Walmart charged my credit card and them told me the Airgas vending machine was out of service then Walmart refused to refund my card so I called Airgas and Stephanie told me Walmart was responsible. Now Walmart will not help me and Airgas could not care less. I was ripped off for $39.84 by both Airgas and Walmart in a time when we were under severe storm threat from our government. They don't have good customer service. They wasted my time and gas money! I called to see if I can fill an oxygen tank for my dental office. They told me that I needed to bring the dentist license to purchase. They said just bring your tank and they would fill it. But when I got there they told me I needed to open an account. Ok, so let's do it. No, I have to call a number and ask if I can open an account on the phone because they can't do it in person. So stupid!!!. So I go back to my car, call the number 4 times, but nobody answers. So I call the number on their sign. A person who is new and can not help me, puts me on hold for 7 minutes and a woman gets on the line and tells me they need to email me the forms and it has to be done on line. I just hung up. Went back to work, called a competitor and within 2 minutes, they scheduled a delivery for next day at the same price airgas quoted me for going to pick it up. So simple! read more

My boyfriend and I went in to buy an argon cylinder, and asked the guy 3x about the price before buying it since we swore we remembered the San Marcos location said less. The guy said he was only able to sell it cheapest as $238.19. So after buying it, we drove down the street and called the San Marcos location and they said they sell it for $130. So we immediately went back into the store to then be told, after they made a few phone calls to management and to the San Marcos location to verify the price, that they'd adjust the price to match the San Marcos location; however, no one there that day was able to do so (new employee was working, and the other just didn't have the ability to do so). They said they'd have someone call us tomorrow. They did indeed call, to then tell us they'd only adjust the price down to $150. Absolutely ridiculous. The staff didn't know anything about their products, let alone what types of products they had, nor where anything was in the store. The San Marcos location is wonderful, and full of knowledgeable / helpful staff. I can't believe this location said they adjust their price after scamming us, to then call and say they wouldn't fully do so. We're currently waiting for a call from management and still haven't accepted their partial adjustment of $150. We're not happy. read more

It was time to get my CO2 filled for my kegerator. 5#s lasts for about 15 kegs so I don't need a fill too often. Anyway, I walked in and one of the 4 or 5 guys working the counter asked what I needed. "5lbs of Carbon Dioxide please" He nods and puts on some safety goggles and gloves and wanders off with my cylinder. Three minutes later he's back with my filled cylinder, ice cold and covered in condensation. He rings me up and off I go ready to tap another keg! Quick and easy. Four stars. read more

Bought 2 tanks from the Berkeley location. Don't fit where I need them to fit so called back to swap. I was told no way, you bought them, we don't take them back. Also came in the other night and bought a pound of welding stick for $56 that's on the Airgas website for $38. Of course you can get it for a quarter of that price anywhere else. I guess every new welder shops from these guys once before they learn. I've shopped there my only time. I'll drive 2 counties over for gas before I give these guys another penny. read more

Did you know that the U.S. is having a helium shortage? GRRR. I called Air Gas today to price out yet another place to rent a helium tank for this Friday's 1st Annual SD Yelp Holiday Party. After getting quotes from places like Party City which were reasonable, but they don't take reservations... to the smaller mom & pop shops who charge a small fortune (more than double the rates of Party City) but they do reserve... I called Airgas after having 3 different people recommend using their services. After being placed on hold for several minutes, my call was finally answered by a woman who was less than helpful. She informed me that there was a helium shortage and they were no longer doing helium rentals. When I asked if it was just SD that was being affected she rudely answered, "Uh no, it's Nationwide" like "DUH, you dumb blond!" Anyway, with a little luck I'll get my hands on the ever elusive helium tank... but if you show up to the party and you see balloons... please know that I might have had to sell my soul or promise my first born, because apparently I am going to have to go underground and get some through the black market! First of all they are RUDE, after being on hold for seems to be half an hour, they answer me with an attitude that they really don't like what they are getting paid for. I have used this company for over 3 years for my current dental office. My delivery guy is the greatest. Always checks my tanks for me. If I do not need certain tanks, then he will let me know. At times when we forget to order and I need to go pick up, I have had good experiences and they always get my order ready for me in a promp manner. Worst company as far as communication and competence. I have worked in the Lab business for many years, and I have never experienced such horrible communication. ESPECIALLY in the accounting department. It has take 2 months to resolve the most minor of issues, and everyone keeps deflecting. We had the worlds best sales rep named Ken who retired last year. Ever since then, the company has gone to hell. The person who took over for him knew nothing about gas, and was never any help. The service department is very nice and tries to be helpful, but they are given very limited abilities which ends up going in circles. Airgas charges a phony monthly HAZMAT FEE that they do not tell you about when you rent a cylinder from them. They could not show us in our contract where it stated we would be paying this fee. We are stuck paying this monthly fee until we use all the gas in the cylinder but we will not be using them in the future. They hide fees- Be warned! HAZMAT fee is 1/3 the cost of the monthly cylinder rental. Our gas isn't even a hazardous material so I have no idea how they can legally charge this. Their sales agent said it is just a fee they charge to make more money as this is how they generate more profit. If you are an accountant or CPA please investigate whether this is legal and if they are mis-filing this on their taxes. We also had to pick up the gas ourselves as they could not figure out how to deliver it. Very unprofessional and most employees are untrained. Seriously, do not use them. read more

I needed a simple CO2 tank fill. I called ahead they said they could fill it no problem. Mind you i've been to at least 5 other welding supply and beer stores and have had this filled in about 3 minutes. Well I get to airgas and he states he cant fill it due to FDA regulations. Take something up to the counter for a price check and get different prices depending on the day. For example, I asked for a price check on some electrodes and got $70. I asked again next time and got $30. - Gas refills are twice as much as competitor's prices. - Counter guys often seem like they have somewhere else to be. - It takes far too long to buy something. I just wanted a couple packs of tig rod and was in the store for 30 minutes. - Merchandise total varies depending on how they "write it up". In summary, prices are inconsistent, clerks are unhelpful and slow, and gas is overpriced. read more

I'm going to have to agree with captain J on this one: the people who work at Airgas are extremely difficult - in all of my interactions with them over the years it really seems that they don't want your business. Despite frustrations with them in the past, my most recent experience has tipped the scales to make me finally write this review - I show up to get a CO2 refill, guy says he can't do it because my tank is aluminum and it has some paint on it. So I ask what the big deal is? it's just a little paint and he says "We can't tell if it was 'bead blasted' in order to prep the surface for painting" (apparently 'bead blasting' would fatally damage the cyclinder for pressurized purposes - a questionable assertion on it's own) Now I bought the cyclinder brand new and know for a fact that it hasn't been 'bead blasted' and, since the paint is practically peeling off on its own anyway I'm thinking I can just go home, scrape it off and come back for the refill - but I'd rather just get the damn refill while I'm there, so I ask what happens when I go home and strip the paint and come back ... his response "Oh we can tell, we can tell if you bead blasted it to remove the paint ..." It goes on like that , but I'll stop there and hopefully you get the idea that they will straight up contradict themselves in back-to-back sentences - which is extremely frustrating. The one thing I will say for airgas is that, while they are not exactly the only game in town, they are pretty damn close - and since all of the other gas places/people are similarly frustrating, airgas may not have a significant motivation to improve their policies or attitudes. I think the best recommendation I can provide is that, because these people deal with a lot of rules and regulations in their business (including hazardous materials &/or hazardous pressures) their default answer to any of your questions is pretty much going to be "No". And since these are the people who found themselves in the gas service business in the first place, you can be assured that they are not very bright - so you'll probably stump them pretty easily, and when you do they will shut everything down quick with a stream of "no"s. Do your research and call around extensively to get a very clear idea of what you want and how you want it before attempting to deal with any gas service employee in person. read more

Tried to upgrade to a 6K tank from a 200 cf nitrogen tank. Through a series of mistakes on their part I ended up without the upgrade and paying for 1 200CF fill and 1 304CF fill. Took the hit instead of wasting a ton more time trying to get them to sort it out. Out the time, out the money, not upgraded. Not worth the trouble. Use the local welders supply instead of this bureaucratic bad dream. read more

This company, Airgas SD overcharges customers with a price of 9.00 per liter of liquid nitrogen (not including gasoline surcharge and other expense like insurance to come out, which is more than 15 times (1500%) than other providers such as Praxair. Moreover, there is poor communication, and the persons on the phone lines are not well-trained and lack of courtesy, and frequently hanged up phones on customers when asked about pricing details. Our company had been with this company for ten years--the price is very high but not like the present price, and the service people can be very rude and unresponsive---Now it is getting far more worse. Horrible, horrible, horrible service. These people either just don't care at all or just plain LIARS!! They tell you one thing and come to find out it was not true. We need to pickup oxygen filled tanks to deliver to our sick patients and they're constantly lying to us saying tanks are ready and filled. When we get there to pick them up, nothing has been done, no tanks are filled, patients are now without oxygen and are having to wait hours and at times days before getting their oxygen. When I worked in biotech Airgas supplied our tissue culture CO2, HPLC gasses, and liquid nitrogen. They handle commercial accounts really well. They picked up our empty cylinders promptly and always made sure valves were covered and safety chains in place. Their cylinders were well maintained and we almost never had problems with the threading. I have never gotten the sense that Airgas was very interested in hobby business. I use 5 lb CO2 cylinders on my aquariums and they prefer to swap out cylinders rather than let you stand around and wait for your nice, shiny cylinder to be filled, although they will do it. Their hours are inconvenient too. I prefer Westair downtown for hobby CO2. read more

Our medical practice in Tacoma has unfortunately used Airgas for over 10 years. They insisted we have a large tank that was unnecessary that cost $100/month. They would "fill" the tank every month at $200, even though our use was minimal. Phone calls, voice mails, and emails were never returned. No one was willing to address this cost for us. After over a year of effort, I finally contracted with another company that provides us liquid nitrogen for $80/month total. They even asked for a copy of Airgas's bill to show others because they couldn't believe we were being gouged this much. Do not use them. There are plenty of other companies out there that will do a better job for much less. read more

I went to buy rods and MPC connectors for my welder and I went in first thing in the morning so there was nearly no other customer. Yet, the person who helped me (older guy with casual clothes instead of ones with name tag), sounded like he just wanted to get through me as fast as possible. Had to give me an attitude for almost every word I said. Since my welder was not present, he had to order through my phone, but when my welder asked for a Tweco MPC connector, they gave me a Radnor one. Since I trusted they gave me the right stuff, I went back to my car, sent the picture to my welder, and he said that Radnor one is very low quality so make sure I get the Tweco one. I went back in and the old fart told me that Radnor is made by Tweco (a lie), so just use it and brushed me off. I told my welder and he was annoyed that Airgas was trying to just get me away from them ASAP for some reason... I went back in again, and as soon as the old fart saw me again, he says "OH THIS IS JUST RIDICULOUS!" and he made the other person help me instead like he was just so sick of me. All of this was happening when there was literally no other customer, and they acted like they just did not want me there for some reason. After reading some of the other reviews, I was a bit hesitant to go along to Airgas, but I didn't have any problems. I have a cylinder that holds 10 lbs of CO2 that I use for inflating tires and running air tools (compressors are so noisy!). They filled it in about 2 minutes for $28 - I don't know if this is a good or bad price, but I was willing to pay it for the convenience, even if I could have saved a few dollars elswhere. The staff were businesslike rather than friendly, but they certainly weren't rude. Why didn't I give 5 stars? Only Einstein or Mother Teresa get 5 stars. read more
