I advise you NOT to work with this company. They were dishonest in their dealings with us…read more We had problems with our furnace shutting off during a recent cold spell. We called Hoerner Heating (which has now been purchased by Dr HVAC) as we had dealt with them before and liked their service. Their technician came to the house on Thursday morning and told us that the furnace was shutting off because it was overheating (which was accurate). They said It was overheating because the unit was too large for the area it was heating, and the furnace immediately required a new gas valve and limit switch as well as cleaning of the blower motor and secondary heat exchanger. This would cost $2405 plus hst; and this was just the beginning, the immediate repairs required. Then there was option B in their report: System Restoration & Enhancements (Option B): "During my evaluation, I noticed extreme temperature stress points on the heat exchanger and the venter motor is overamping. These are still in safe operation but when they fail, they will cost around $4800". A new furnace was probably the more cost effective approach. A sales person from Dr HVAC came by that afternoon. Dr HVAC coincidentally had a spot they were looking to fill the next morning, Friday, and could offer us a new furnace installation at a special cost of $6000. We declined their offer as we do not make large purchase decisions under pressure, without research and a minimum of 3 quotes. Our furnace is SIX years old and still under warranty. This was never mentioned. We called Carrier the furnace manufacturer and asked if a limit switch and gas valve was covered under warranty. Yes it was but we would have to deal with a repair company that had a contract with Carrier and could find one listed on their website. We contacted Dupont heating and A/C who is listed on Carrier's website. We told them we believed we needed a new gas valve and limit switch. They came Friday morning. According to their technician, there was nothing wrong with the gas valve or limit switch, both were working fine. The only issue was the gas pressure coming into the furnace which needed to be reduced. We did NOT need any new parts for the furnace and we most certainly did NOT need a new furnace. All DR HVAC technicians must be on commission. They are very pleasant to deal with, and very convincing, but you cannot believe a word they say. They charge the lowest initial diagnostic fee but, be warned, you may pay far more than you need to if you work with them.

I was provided a quote on an AC unit that they recommended and the price was very competitive and based on the other positive reviews I decided to move ahead with the install. The technicians that came over were also very helpful and answered any questions that I had. The AC unit was just installed today so I haven't had the opportunity to use it much, but based on the experience so far, I trust that I will be in good hands if there are any issues down the road. He contacted about the A/C job asking if I would like a heat pump instead trying to up sell right from the start. I told him the 75 gallon water heater had to be done first. He asked if he can quote. He wouldn't register or do a site visit to see what either job entailed and kept messaging over and over. He kept going over the details so he was trying to estimate and I repeatedly gave him the same info. He asked why the venting supplied by Rheem with the tank was not white PVC and didn't understand. I had to explain to him the venting requirements had changed about 7 years ago on 75 gallon tanks due to higher temperatures. I had to tell him repeatedly I had all the materials to install. I gave him photos of everything to see it was straight forward. Job with less than 8 feet of venting that I was supplying. He said he would complete the job and bill me later and include any incurred expenses . I told him I do not proceed with any job without a contract with upfront firm pricing and any terms.. Then he asked again if they were providing the materials. He had the photo showing all the materials I had and again I told him I had all the materials. He then asked about me to a heat pump and I said if I wanted a heat pump it would have been stated in the job details I told them that them we had a high efficiency 2 stage furnace and my heating costs were under $900.00 per season keeping the thermostat at a constant 75 F. Our house is 3300 sq. ft. and Enbridge shows our house more efficient than 96% of the houses in our area which includes many of them with heat pumps. That was the end of dealing with them for both the water heater and the A/C when I requested a particular York Affinity model and he quoted on a different model. The most frustrating experience I have ever had just for an estimate.

We were very fortunate for Eco Star's service, as we also called another HVAC company and didn't hear from them. Since it was a last minute service request and it was during the holidays, their rate is $195+tax - compared to their normal rate of $95+tax for the initial inspection. Eco Star's technician was able to fix the furnace and we're now literally warm and comfortable for Christmas day. Thank you Eco Star! I'd recommend Eco Star to anyone.

He is very professional, answered my calls and got back to me promptly. He also worked around my schedule to arrange an appointment that was convenient for me. He was upfront about the cost and process, and took his time with his investigation. It did not feel like a rushed visit. In terms of his professionalism, I would give him 5 stars. Unfortunately I was not satisfied with his work. He was able to successfully rule out the actuator valve as the issue, but was incorrect with his diagnosis. He believed it to be the temperature of the water supply to the building, which turned out to be incorrect. I ended up having to go through my building's contractor, who traced the issue back to the control panel. Again, Sam was extremely professional but ultimately was unable to resolve the issue for me - which is why I would not go with him again.
