I went on the UCLA Alumni Trip that was hosted by AESU. It mirrors one of their general tours they…read moredo (Europe Up and Down?) but the UCLA alumni center sold most of the spots to it. There's some commission thing involved. Let me say that I did not expect as much travel time. Three to four hour bus rides were common on this trip, as was waking up at 6 to 7 AM to get on the bus. If you can't sleep in cars, you may not want to do one of these trips. We jammed 11 countries in 19 days. I wish we spent more time in some of the cities rather than bouncing after a day or two. In belgium, we literally only stayed in Brussels for 2 hours... It was a really good experience though. While it's on the expensive side as far as college organized tours, most of the places we stayed at were pretty nice (with the exception of Paris - you know they banked our money when booking that hotel). Traveling alone is also no problem, as a surprising number of travelers did not book with somebody else. If you're expecting some relaxing vacation, look elsewhere. This is a fast paced, lets-do-everything tour with a packed itinerary. Our tour guide, Jamie, was really good. A former pro volleyball player in Europe, he now is a teacher who does tours on summer vacations. He's completely professional and extremely fun at the same time. Overall? Pretty good experience, but if you have the chance to study abroad take that instead. Becoming "local status" in one city versus doing one-day touristy stuff appeals to me more. When booking a tour like this: -Watch out for # of people per room -See how many countries they are trying to go to -Check what the age range is for tour groups. Some prefer high schoolers.

Thoroughly surprised by this venue located in the lovely Village of Cross Keys. From the time you…read morewalk into the lobby, you notice the great room, marble floors and cozy waiting area. The staff were all friendly and generous. When we got to our room on the top floor, the king suite was huge compared to the many hotel rooms we've visited. It had vaulted ceilings, a fantastic view of the village shops and marble bathroom. The bed was quite comfortable. We had a fridge (phew) and lots of outlets for charging. Complimentary breakfast was served in the morning offering something for everyone-the meat eater to the vegan. The shops include great restaurants, such as 'Cee Cee's (fantastic!), Nine Tailed Fox and Always ice cream. A lovely experience!

To a person, they were warm and friendly, from the folks at check in to housekeeping. Give credit where credit is due -- they were all lovely! Now, onto the hotel itself: LOCATION/ARRIVAL: The hotel is located in the Cross Keys complex, and you will see a sign upon arrival into the complex. After that point there is minimal signage, and all of us had a hard time finding our way: You want to drive left and go around the back of the whole complex. Parking is in the garage or lot -- there was amble there and it was free. BUILDING/ROOM: Listen, the place has good bones -- it was built in the 1960s and the architecture is fun. But the hotel itself is in sore need of a full renovation. Wallpaper is peeling, carpet is outdated, elevator is clearly older, etc. Furniture was clearly on the newer side, but still showing signs of wear. However, bed was clean and decent, and the TV was newer and allowed access to things like Netflix and Pandora, with an easy option to log out anytime (also done automatically after check-out). If you care about views and lighting, ask for a room overlooking the courtyard. OTHER ITEMS: Good wifi. Free parking. Free continental breakfast that went beyond the basics. Restaurant was not open, so you can't get any food onsite beyond the little convenience store (nothing onsite in the complex, either -- you're going to need to get delivery or drive somewhere). Some funky smells in the hallway. Not great soundproofing -- could clearly hear music from the room next door, even over our own TV. BOTTOM LINE: I hope that the new owners of the Cross Keys complex work with Marriott to invest in renovation, open the restaurant, and get more going on in the complex in general. I expect that in 2-5 years this hotel will be a great place to visit and prices will go up significantly. In the meantime, it's a fine place for a night or two for those on a budget looking to be in the area.
