The workmanship is top-notch. I don't like automated systems and this system was unlike the others for cable, healthcare, etc., this one actually WORKED on every single thing the first time! I usually have negative sentiment towards a company after using their poorly designed automated system, not this one - I had positive sentiment. I got the text confirmation immediately. In the coming days I received the expected and timely reminder, and "heads-up on the way." David showed up in the arrival time window professionally and wore booties over his boots inside our house. David assessed the error code, confirmed the issue, focused on safety and then gave me the bad news. First, it was going to be expensive - an induction motor replacement. Second, though it was going to be expensive, he didn't recommend I hire him. He thought I'd get better (faster, more efficient, happy) service for my brand of furnace by working with an authorized factory service company, given that it was this particular manufacturer. Apparently, if he called in for part availability, it's a job he certainly can do, that's not the issue, the company would be slow to respond to him because he's not an authorized service company for my brand - YET. He is for another brand, just not mine - YET. This would add friction to the process, to the point of not accepting as credible the assessment (we had a code, mind you) of an experienced HVAC pro. He didn't want me to go through this. It wouldn't make me happy and it's possible it would just delay - without heat in winter - the inevitable of having to go the authorized service route in the end anyway. I will say that using Yelp I found an authorized company I liked. (I called two companies, the first one was in town and a mile away and I was not impressed. The next was a couple cities over and I used them.) I was not charged for the diagnosis. THIS IS LONG TERM THINKING AND TRUE, OLD-SCHOOL CUSTOMER SERVICE! I not only recommend Art of Comfort though I did not have more than the diagnostic piece done, I have saved their number for the future and will share it with friends and neighbors. Chill offered to repair the unit, including recharging the system, but I was concerned that it would just be a waste of money since the AC would probably fail again soon. Chill then provided a couple of reasonable estimates to replace the AC and explained the pluses/minuses of each option. Decided to go ahead with a replacement. Chill scheduled the installation a couple of days later. They arrived on time and got it done as expected. The lead tech was very friendly and explained everything he found with the old system and what he was doing with the new install. Wherever we've lived we like to support local businesses. I found this company based on all the wonderful Yelp reviews to tune up my old gas furnace- something I do every year before the winter season to ensure optimal maintenance. They came out and immediately refused to do the service citing possible asbestos tape. I asked how this was possible when the last 15 years I've gotten service and have even asked the contractors to do a visual inspection of my system. They weren't sure but said that another employee in the area can come look and give me an estimate for a new system. I thought this was shady and it turns out, I was 100% right. They came later that day and quoted me $26K for a new system not including subcontracting to get the asbestos removed (another $1500). I was told and shown pictures that there was evidence of the same tape inside the duct work. I was told I would get these pictures sent to me with along with the estimate but never received any of them. I got someone to come out and test a sample of said material for $100 which did come out positive for asbestos. However the only asbestos that presented any harm was the tape on the outside of the system. There was no asbestos inside but it was recommended that I do more expensive air testing since Perfect Star said I would not be able to use my heater without the asbestos getting released into the air. Not only was this stressful to hear right before the cold weather, but I was very concerned that over the last decade I had inadvertently put my whole families health in danger using this furnace. Meanwhile, Raymond Kinder texted me a few days later to find out if I was going to move forward with the new unit. I told him asbestos removal was my priority. His response via text was "if they remove asbestos, you will not be able to run that furnace as the gases will not be vented out properly." This was not true. After several weeks of not using my heater and exploring other options to deal with a pretend problem they created for me, I went with Air Quality Testing who charged $540 for an air test. $640 later along with having no use of my heater, I learned that there is no asbestos running through my air or ducts. Perfect Star literally lied to me in order to attempt to get me to drop nearly $30,000 on a new system. Stay away from this company! They do not deserve your business for lying to their customers.

The crew left discarded piping on the roof, and the blower wheel was damaged during the installation process. Second, the company showed a lack of professional responsibility and communication. While on-site, the technicians clearly noticed that relevant, adjacent systems (installed previously by others) were incorrect. Rather than informing me of these issues, they chose to ignore them. A responsible contractor should communicate crucial system findings to the homeowner and avoid damaging new equipment. I do not recommend their services based on this experience.

Earlier this year I hired Eco Performance Builders install a new heat pump system, remove my old…read moregas furnace, relocate equipment into the attic, replace all ductwork, remove existing attic insulation, air-seal the attic, and eventually reinstall insulation. The experience was outstanding from start to finish. What really set this company apart is that they actually performed proper Manual J load calculations to size the system--something almost no other contractor I contacted was willing to do (load calculations are code required by the way). Every other quote I received assumed a system size based purely on square footage and would have resulted in a dramatically oversized system. Instead, this team took the time to measure, assess, and design a system tailored specifically to my home's demand. They even performed a blower door test to quantify air leakage--another thing no one else offered. As a result, I ended up with a 2.5-ton heat pump. Meanwhile, all other companies wanted to replace what was there (4-ton) or go even higher (5-ton). One company wanted to put in a 100k BTU furnace which is absurd. Their design work was thoughtful and meticulous. The Manual J and Manual S calculations they did ensured that the system was sized properly including duct sizes and lengths. They showed attention to detail with locating and aiming registers to reduce duct lengths (less energy loss due to being in the unconditioned attic) and to improve comfort (limiting air blowing on you in bed). They also took care to locate the ducts so they can bury them in the future attic insulation as much as possible. The on-site crew was excellent--friendly, respectful, and professional every day. They kept the workspace clean, coordinated work around my partner's daytime sleep schedule, and were incredibly flexible with scheduling overall. I've had to push back adding attic insulation multiple times so I can do a few attic projects first, and they've never complained or made it an issue (I still am not ready and they are fine with it). The resulting system has been working great since they installed the heat pump and air sealed in May. The system is basically silent and my house has been quite comfortable. I'm pretty sure the system has been more efficient than my old furnace based on my energy monitoring system that measures current to the unit and PG&E bills from last year, and this is without attic insulation. Regarding cost, you would think that EPB would be significantly more expensive especially considering they will do the proper design work. However, I got a few quotes additional quotes and EPB actually end up significantly cheaper than all other companies that didn't include any real design work! In short, this is the only company I found that actually does things the right way, prioritizing proper design and customer satisfaction. I thought this would hurt the bank but it didn't. I'm extremely happy with the results and would recommend them without hesitation.
