We went to Big Island thinking we'd just rent a car once we get there because we didn't know yet what days we'd need a car. We didn't want to pay car rental for a full week (plus hotel parking) when we'd only use it for a couple of days or so. BIG MISTAKE! We didn't realize a golf tournament and some medical conventions would take place in the island during the time of our visit. Long story short, all the major car rental companies did not have a single car available for us. And believe me, we called them all---Enterprise, Budget, Avis, National, Dollar, Hertz, you name it! It was such a nightmare! We were finally able to rent a Subaru AWD on our 4th and 5th day in Kona for about $160 PER DAY!!! You read that right, PER DAY. So we spent over $300 for a 2-day car rental. When we moved to Hilo, Tony's was the ONLY car rental that had a vehicle available. Tony was aware of the car shortage situation in the island that week, but did he take advantage and jack up his prices??? NO!!! He charged us about $40/day. If only for that, he definitely deserves the 4 stars. But here's the thing...as I've mentioned earlier, the car he rented us was filthy. It reeked of cigarette; there were hair strands from previous passengers on the dashboard cover; the center console beverage holder was yucky and sticky; the 12-volt DC power outlet didn't work so we couldn't charge our cellphones; the driver's door had a broken handle; the gas door was broken as well; the wiper fluid was empty; the check engine light was on; it was manual transmission. Despite all of those negatives, the car still got us from point A to point B. And in the end, isn't that all that really matters? Had we not been desperate at that time, we would have looked elsewhere. But I'm glad to have met a decent, hardworking guy like Tony. Maybe next time we'll still rent from him, but we'll make sure to request for a cleaner car :)

By the way, a 250.00 hold was put on my card. I got a mid size vehicle with insurance and it was affordable for the day. Opted to put my own gas, which is 5.00 a gallon right now in Hilo. Car was smooth driving, low mileage, and not clean. So I advise to sanitize and inspect before driving off the lot. Drop off was easy. Just park the car, write down your mileage on the provided paper, and drop that plus your keys at the front desk. Had a great experience and for the price ya cant beat it.

I accidentally went to the Budget counter to return my key rather than the Hertz counter (one over). As soon as the female employee realized I had the wrong company her smile disappeared from her face and she said, rudely and loudly in front of other customers, "This is not our key. Move along!" She shooed me by pushing the key back and waving her hand dismissively. Wow. Now I really won't rent from Budget. I was offended as I was kind to her and even apologized. Someone needs customer service training.

Drop off (after hours) was easy and we received our check out paperwork and final costs by the end of the same day.

You have to go to the desk to across from the terminals and they physically hand you your keys. This is fine but it also means you have to wait in line with the tourists. Depending on your luck, it might be awhile. Once I got to the register everything was ready, my reservation was there. I think they verified my id and I was on my way. Returning the car was the same thing, you have to physically wait in line to return the keys. So maybe leave yourself some time but Hilo isn't a super busy airport so you should be ok. Everything else was totally fine.

Several folks in front of us reported issues with their cars. Not good. Our car had cosmetic issues, but we noted them ahead of time and went on our way. Turn in was ok, they noted that the car was taken with cosmetic issues and they were not our fault. Still not very friendly staff.

Rented for the week without incident. come 2.5…read moremonths later, i got a letter in the mail saying i owe money for damage. they charged my credit card the same day. i knew i caused no damage to this rental car. the letter had no specifics about the damage, just said "vehicle damage." i emailed them demanding for proof that i caused this damage and that i dispute the charges. they replied saying "the charges are valid" and nothing more. again i told them i dispute without proof and that they still can't even tell me the damage that happened. they reply with a number saying all the documents are under this number (that i cannot access) and all further correspondences are a copy and paste of that email. so i called them. the lady on the line said she COULD NOT FIND ANY DOCUMENTATION of any damage under my account. after a long hold, she came back on and said she processed a refund... whether they charged me a low enough amount that they thought i wouldn't look into it, or they have very disorganized internal processing, it both leads to the same outcome: DO NOT RENT WITH THEM!

I just rented a vehicle this past weekend and unfortunately ran into a problem with the key fob. In a matter of minutes, they resolved the issue and replaced the vehicle! My ohana was deciding where to have breakfast and tita from next door national rental heard us and offered places to eat. As see was more than willing to help us I ask if she had any vehicle available and boom she was super accommodating we ended renting our vehicle from national. She had so much aloha and smile through out our transaction. Held 3 days rental on the debit card and we was off and ready to go to our ohana funeral. Thrifty you can learn customer service from your neighbor national!!
