The sweet potato roll was crunchy and tasty - just what I wanted. The curry was unexpected since I never had this flavor before...I was thinking it would be like thai curry but it was a different flavor. Regardless, it was tasty. I got the tofu one which came with eggplants, bell peppers and other veggies as well as tofu. Ambiance was pretty nice. It's not overly formal but good for lunch dates. Service was good. Visiting my sister in the area and was craving sushi, so we decided to order from Aikou Asian Cuisine. She's ordered here before and mentioned it was really good. We picked up our order, which came out to about $65 for 4 dishes. I ordered the monster roll which is part of their special rolls. It consisted of: soft shell crab tempura, avocado topped with spicy tuna & spicy salmon. This sounded tasty and like it would be a large amount so I was disappointed to see these were presented similar to and the size of a regular roll. The flavors were fine - unfortunately the eel sauce was only distributed to the bottom of the pieces where the tempura stuck out. The textures all mushed together for the other pieces. I didn't really enjoy the roll until I got to those last two pieces with the eel sauce - the tempura was crunchy and I could make out the other ingredients more. This roll alone was $15, which I don't think is worth it for what it is. I'd love to love this spot, but I can't really justify it. I'm sure it's great, but I'm hesitant to give it another shot. read more

1st time trying this restaurant. Have been driving by for the past 6 years, and it never looked open. The windows are totally covered with plain white shades and you can't see in, so the place appears closed. It is not a very appealing front to this restaurant, and so I never wanted to try it. However, I was recently told it is an active restaurant and the food, specifically sushi, is very good. So I decided to give it a try with a friend. As it turns out, the sushi and the food we ordered was very good. The atmosphere inside is nice and comfortable, surprisingly, based upon the exterrnal appearance. I wish I had known sooner that Akou was actually in business and that their menu was really very good. I strongly suggest they upgrade their window shades and replace with something that is more aesthetically appealing, and inviting to people not familiar with the restaurant!! This is my go-to sushi place! It's consistently fresh whether ordering out or actually eating there. It's pretty much as close to quality New York City sushi as you can get in Hunterdon County and further inland. It's usually packed whenever we go: weekend or not, so I'd want to play it safe and make a reservation in most cases. However, my boyfriend and I were undecided about where we wanted to go out to eat to celebrate our anniversary and we didn't originally want to go to Aikou since we go there so often. At the end of the day, we decided why not? We already knew we were going to love the food and that's the most important part and the atmosphere is definitely cozy and intimate enough anyway. Plus, we could then bring our own bottle of champagne to celebrate as it's BYOB (score). We arrived without a reservation around 9pm (they close at 10pm) on a Monday and the place was already empty. We felt a little guilty and asked if they were still able to seat us. The kitchen staff was visibly already cleaning up, but they took everything back out just for us. On top of that, the service was as great as ever, all of the food was delicious as usual (and we really went all out), and we never felt rushed. I'd highly recommend in any situation and for any occasion. My favorite orders are the eel avocado, spicy salmon and tuna rolls. I came here for my birthday dinner during the week. We arrived at around 6:30pm and were seated immediately. It did seem to get busy, which was surprising considering it was a Tuesday night. The menu has a bunch of options to choose from. Aikou offers sushi, Thai, and various other Asian dishes to choose from. I liked that they had a wide variety of options because while my boyfriend and I are sushi lovers, my mom is not. Thankfully, we were able to get our sushi fix and she was able to get something else. For appetizer, we all split the scallion pancakes. They were delicious! I would definitely recommend them. It came with about 6 triangle sized pieces and a dipping sauce. I also ordered the Tom Yum soup. This was another hit in my book. It was served piping out and was a bit on the spicer side. The spice level was just right. I also tried some of my boyfriend's wonton soup which was just as good. For dinner, my boyfriend and I split spicy kani roll, sweet potato roll, and angel roll. I preferred the angel roll while my boyfriend liked the sweet potato roll. I must also add that everything was plated nicely. While the food was good, the service was lacking. The timing was way off. This issue started when my mom was given her soup waaaay before the other appetizers were ready. She was practically finished by the time we received ours. There was also a very long wait between the time we got our appetizers to when the dinner came out. We ended up spending a couple hours at dinner. Overall, I'd say Aikou was good but nothing to write home about. I tend to prefer Kyoto (another sushi place right around the corner) a bit more. PRO TIP: Aikou is BYO! Even though the total addition is not large, I feel that it is inappropriate to charge for the use of a credit card. Read reviews of this place on Yelp and thought I'd check it out. To be honest, I'm glad I did. It is very nice and clean inside and the sushi is DELICIOUS. I tried some of my friends Chinese food and his chicken was very good, probably the best I've ever had. The sushi tasted so good and fresh. I do have some complaints though, I didn't like how you don't get any chips and duck sauce like most other Japanese/Chinese restaurants do. If they did, I would've rated this place 5 stars. We were just awkwardly sitting there waiting for our food starving. My friends got their soup/salad and my meal didn't come with a soup or salad which I found annoying. My meal was more expensive then my friends sushi she ordered and mine came with less pieces, and no soup or salad. I believe I got the Carnation Roll. The prices weren't that expensive, they were about the same as any other Japanese Sushi restaurant. I definitely recommend you try this place out! We went here for lunch again and again the food was great. We had the New Age sashimi, which had a fantastic sauce on it. The lightly seared tuna in the dish was really nice, but the salmon in it was a little less nice. Next time I think I'd ask if they could make the dish with just the tuna. We also had some of the special rolls (one was called a Yummy Yummy roll, and I forget what the others were) and all of these were good, complicated, and unusual. I ordered shumai again, and again they were tasty. One of the ladies in our party hates seafood so she had the orange beef. I didn't taste it but she loved it. The service still needs work--our server seemed like he hates his job, and he kept asking us if we were ready despite the fact that the entire table was still looking at the menu. I don't know what the rush was, since not all the tables were occupied. The food came out quickly, though, and unlike the last time they actually brought our starters out first. In a big city I'd probably leave it at 4 stars, but since Aikou is head and shoulders above all the other Asian I've had in Flemington I'll bump it up to 5. read more

I would click 0 stars but that's not an option. We were the only customers within the store and yet food was still forgotten from our order. When it came time to pay and the receipt still reflected the missing items the server had no issue removing it from the bill. It was the owner that basically called us liars and had to confirm with not only the waiter but also the sushi bar that they had not made it. They'd charge you for the air you're breathing if they could. Also charged me for multiple drinks after asking me if I had wanted a refill. But that's partially my fault for assuming just like every other place I have ever eaten out that a refill would be free rather then a whole new drink charge for a drink with the same ice, cup, lemon & straw that I originally ordered. read more
