This hip ramen restaurant was a welcome meal on a cold Stockholm day! Coming from the SF Bay Area, we get a fair amount of quality fresh ramen. Our relatives recommended this spot during our holiday visit, and the ramen here hit the mark. I had the Red Hot ramen, which was rich and flavorful, with layers of flavor, tender and meaty pork belly, and a perfectly jammy shoyu marinated egg. Lots of flavor, and not too hot for my spice-loving palate. They use thin straight style ramen noodles here, which tasted fresh and had perfect spring. Our local relatives opted for their favorite, the Stockholm Shoyu - which also looked excellent. During my last trip to Stockholm, my sister and I had a ramen at Café Stiernan and enjoyed it so we decided to give Ai Ramen a try since it was located close to the AirBnB we were staying at. I highly recommend not ordering the spicy miso because it was expensive and inedible. Instead of chashu, there was ground meat. I only ate a few bites and the reason why I took more than one bite was because I was curious and wanted to understand which part of the dish tasted bad. I figure out that the flavor was coming from the noodles. The spice came from a numbing pepper that I did not like. Spicy miso is usually my go-to when I order ramen but the flavor was not what I was expecting. When I normally order spicy miso, the broth is like tonkatsu with a spicy miso paste. When I saw this place, it didn't give any Japanese restaurant vibe. Funnily, it looks like just another typical fancy Cafe instead. When I entered, I was a little bit surprised that they don't do the usual Japanese greeting here. Well, I don't mind it though, just feel a bit weird. While it's popular back in Indonesia, Maybe a Japanese theme restaurant isn't a thing in Sweden. The waiter personally recommended me the red hot and miso since it's creamier. When I saw my friend's sthlm shoyu, I agree with him. Well, it's shoyu based afterall.. And I like my soup creamy I can say that it was not the best ramen I had, but this ramen was pretty good.. I ordered red hot with extra pork since red hot has minced boar as topping, and it is not ramen if not eaten with sliced pork belly.. As for the red hot part, I just can say that if you are spicy food lover. Don't expect Much.. Well, to be fair, Japanese has low tolerance to spicy food also, and ramen isn't supposed to be spicy normally.. You open the door and the staff is silent, but the music (trendy) loud and you know straight off the bat this isn't going to be a Japanese experience at all. That's okay if the food is good [enough] and i don't like pretenders anyway, but the restaurant somewhat looks the part. It just isn't on all dimensions. Food is good. Egg and meat is actually really good, but then the ramen is cooked more like pasta (think: 'al dente') offering a little too much resistance. The broth is thick and nice, but maybe too spicy. It's not that I don't like spicy (I LOVE spicy), but for ramen I want to taste more of the meat broth. Is that too much to ask? Otherwise: great presentation and mostly a good overall eating experience. Waitress was attentive enough but kitchen staff appears a bottleneck to good service; You run a limited menu ramen kitchen the only time between servings should be the noodles. Everything else is ready to go more or less. So why would it take 40 minutes to get your meal!? Well if the chef thinks he works for the local municipality administration office then that's why, yes? Slightly smaller portion sizes and higher priced than I'm used to but the flavor was pretty good! We came on a rainy evening during our travels recently and it was just what we needed. I liked that the toppings for the tonkatsu were simple, just pork, green onion, egg and bamboo shoot (and a small slice of fish cake). A lot of western places will pile on extraneous toppings until you can't see the soup or noodles any more! But in this case keeping it simple and fairly traditional was perfect. read more

Rating a ramen place in Sweden as someone who has spent a fair amount of time in Japan is a bit tricky as all the places here will most likely fail to impress. Ai Ramen hs received a lot of praise and while not great they still are not as good as I would have hoped. Despite the location (far off on Söder in the premises the used to hold En Gul och En Ful) it was fairly full when I entered on a Sunday and they informed us that we had order right away as they were running out of noodles. For a noodle place that is of course a bad thing. The menu is simple, a few different types of Ramen. The Tonkotso was already sold out so had the Shoyu instead (could have tried the Spicy Miso as well but not a fan of Yuzu). The broth looked a bit thin but actually had a lot of flavor and with addition of some chilly oil and sesame was good. The meat pieces were good but few and far between. The big disappointment was however the noodles, seriously they are not ok. You get better quality noodles in the ramen packages bought for a few SEK in the store. That really brought down the experience but still good ramen to be Sweden. The rest of the menu is limited and also drinks selection is limited. There are a few decent beers but 90 SEK for a small beer is a bit steep. I will still visit again and try some more of the Ramen. Tip from the waitress was to avoid weekend evenings as the no bookings system and the huge surge in popularity meant they had waiting times around 2 hours during the weekend. read more

In short: edible but not tasty. Maybe it's because I ordered the vegetarian ramen, but the soup tasted mostly like vegetables in water. The broth was very tasteless and overall was not enjoyable. I tried their tonkotsu before and it was a huge disappointment, but heard that their ramen soup had been improved so I decided to give a try again. This time I ordered Shoyu (duck broth with kitakata-style noodles). The broth was thin and not flavorful, and I was disappointed with that the noodles were not Kitakata style at all. (Kitakata noodles should be thick and curly!) I tasted my friend's Spicy Miso, it was better than Shoyu but Yuzu-kosho completely dominated the taste. I could really see their effort to improve and wish I could give one more star, but sorry, I didn't feel satisfied with the taste. read more

Decided to try this place for two reasons - first, we loooove ramen! We go regularly to a couple of great ramen places in London so wanted to trial this Stockholm one. Second, we found this place thanks to green kitchen stories & have loved every recommendation so far. Its great! Tried the beef tartar which was absolutely wonderful! Fine, sophisticated flavour and oh so beautiful presentation. For ramen we had a good at the traditional tonkotsu. Very good but i have to be honest and say it doesnt come close to the london tonkotsu... Broth was slightly watery, which isnt really ideal. However, our neighbours ordered other ramen though - veggie looked beautiful, and another one with the most beautiful egg ever. Only issue is that i dont actually know which one it was :( i know not really useful, sorry!!! Only downside - very slooow service, but if you have time whats the problem? read more

I've eaten at Ai Ramen twice. Apparently they changed their menu quite recently, so maybe things have gotten better. The locale is quite modern/minimalistic and the staff have always been friendly and polite. Both times I ordered the dish with a pork based broth (don't remember the name, and it doesn't appear to be on the menu anymore), and the description sounded SO tasty. "pork broth boiled for 14 hours bla bla bla". The dish in real life was an utter disappointment. The broth was so watery and bland. It lacked salt, umami and depth. The other thing I didn't like was the thin noodles. I like them "standard thick". It wasn't BAD (Like Raamen), but lightyears from good. It's pricy too. With that said the menu have changed since I last ate there, and I'm gonna give them one more shot at rectifying their reputation with me! I do feel a bit unfair towards every place serving ramen in Stockholm. Cause they are probably trying their very best. And I admit that Ai Ramen does a good job. Nice atmosphere, good drink list and several ramen dishes to choose from. I had the tonkotsu ramen and the egg was perfect, thin noodles and some nice crispy pickled onion as condiments. But, the broth lacked in flavor and punch. It honestly felt a bit watery In my opinion the broth is what should really make your tastebuds pop and urge you to scoop up every spoonful of broth left after you've finished your serving of noodles. I know I can't compare it to Tokyo, but for around 150kr per bowl, I would like to see some more punch in the broth please. read more

What a great ramen! This place won the award for best cheap eats in 2016 and it really lived up to that. The food was super tasty, I had the spicy miso and the pork was so tender. The atmosphere was really cool, I forgot I was in Stockholm, it felt more like a restaurant in New York. This place gets 4 stars for me on the basis of the veggie ramen alone. This really stood out as a wonderful umami-filled broth thanks to the use of mushrooms in place of miso, often I leave ramen joints feeling sorely disappointed by the vegetarian ramen. I also ordered the pickles, making guesses on a few there were cucumber, mushroom, and what I assume was plum and kimchi. The mushroom pickle was stand-out, soo good, however the cucumber had a little too much sharp acidity. Now to the negatives, my meat-eating ramen friends were a little disappointed with the broth of their tonkotsu ramen. The soft-shell fried crab dish was tasty but unrecognisable as crab. Overall we had an enjoyable meal- I loved my veggie ramen and ended the meal with a nice bit of mochi ice cream. But Ai ramen will have to work on the broth to impress more discerning frequent ramen eaters, and elevate themselves above another hipster ramen joint. read more

Was hoping for so much more. This place has come highly recommended and we finally got around to trying it tonight. I didn't have super high expectations but it was still missing the mark. The broth was not quite hot enough and the noodles were not really ramen type noodles (I almost felt like they were dried noodles from a package!). The broth lacked depth. The best part was probably the egg. I had the shoyu ramen. We ordered gyoza and kimchi on the side and the gyoza was kind of fried without much flavor, the kimchi was quite bland and tasted stale. Had a need for some ramen while walking around Sofo and found this spot on Yelp. I was a little apprehensive due to the rating, but the ramen craving was greater so I made the walk north. I can start by saying that Ai Ramen did not dissapoint! While it was not the most traditional variety of ramen, it most definitely was made up for in tastiness! Food(Lunchtime but on a Sunday): Miso Ramen with side of Friend Chicken: The miso ramen comes with a variety of beans(lima and edamame) and a delicious miso broth. Salty, in a good way, and a little heat in the spice.The chicken was served on the side, fried with a medium-thick batter and came with some spicy mayo or aioli. It could've have have a bit more flavor, but was well-cooked. Shoyu Ramen: Has a variety of mushrooms, all delicious, but some cooked better than others. The shoyu broth was excellent and the crispy kale on top added some crunch. The poached egg was a bit runny, but that is just how I like mine, so it blended with the broth perfectly. Drinks: Asahi: Never a bad choice Hitachino Nest Beer Redrice Ale: Hard to find, happy to know it is here. Overall: while maybe not authentic, delicious and cool Swedish atmosphere.
