Supplying many of these hobbies have been relegated to a few shelves in big-box craft shops like Michaels and Hobby Lobby in the US. Once I found Imperial Hobbies on Yelp during our vacation and it was near our hotel, I made my plans. I dropped my wife off for her spa day and this was going to be my spa day ;) The store is in a group of buildings almost at the end of the runway of Vancouver Airport (YVR). If you hang around, you'll see tons of airliners approaching for landings and roaring off on take offs. I just couldn't believe the selection of plastic models of planes, armor, cars and trucks along with complete selections of paint and finishing materials. It's these types of stores that I would spend hours in as a boy, but could only stare wide-eyed because I never had much money back then. But now as an adult with a job and disposable income, I probably would have gone broke if I didn't have to pack everything into my luggage to fly home. The favorable CAD$ to USD$ exchange rate also helped a lot in my shopping. I ended up with a couple of scale plastic model kits and a flying model rocket that are rare, out of production kits or very hard to find, even on-line.

A bit abrasive. A bit impatient. But if you're paying attention you'll see they have more selection, stock, knowledge, and competence than pretty much every other store within 30km combined. But if you want helpful, knowledgeable staff? Selection and stock? Go here. Yes. They might be a bit abrasive. But if you have a little patience, they're head and shoulders above most. They never fail to make time for my kids. Answering questions and treating them like people. I saw reviews from people claiming "they dont want my money" or other bullshit because (literally quoting a review 'I wanted to buy a 200$ card', yeah so? A box of cards starts At around 200 and goes up from there. Do you have any concept of how much money goes through that place? And yet, if you have a little patience I've had them spend a half hour finding 5 bucks worth of cards for me. They're always willing to help out. Taking time even if it's not really worth their time financially. Do they have amazing customer service? Patience with people browsing? No. Not really. But I've been to every card store within 30km of here and they have the best selection, the most stock, and always make time even if there's a lot going on. So if you want to whine that they didn't stop helping people spending ten times what you are because you feel special? Then go ahead. Go somewhere else. See how that goes for you.
