I called several times to make sure we were on the books. Guess what? The day before as I'm sitting in the hospital with my terminally ill mother, I get a call from Charlie. Charlie is the manager at the Richmond location. He proceeded to tell me a plethora of excuses. First, it was a church group that wanted to extend their time in the party room. Then, they didn't have room in the party room. Then, he had a corner in the back of the restaurant for us. I immediately left my mother's side to straighten out this clusterF. On top of my mom dying, my son's graduation dinner shouldn't be ruined also. Charlie and I were at an impasse. With graduation being the next day, there was simply no other restaurant that could accommodate my group of 30. I think asked if the Stafford location had availability. The manager, Mr. Julio called me right away. He was so accommodating. My family and I were truly grateful for his willingness to work with us. His staff treated us so well. Their kindness brought me to tears at a very trying time in our lives. Mr. Julio was truly Heaven sent. Oh and yes, the food and margaritas were exceptional!

Our event took place on October 11 at 4:00 PM. On October 3, I informed the rockstar hibachi team that we would like a quote that included tables and chairs along with the catering service. Then, on October 6 at 6:46 AM, in my email to the team, I specifically stated: "We will be paying for the setup including tables, chairs, linens, plates, etc." I paid the deposit timely and the full balance promptly on the morning of October 11. However, to our surprise, when the chef arrived, there were no tables, chairs, or setup materials provided. The chef informed us that these items were not included in the invoice. I immediately called Adeline from Rockstar Hibachi--whom I had been communicating with--and she confirmed that this was an error on her part. The chef attempted to contact the main office but received no response. As a result, we had to scramble to find tables, chairs, linens, and dishware for 15 guests while our guests were already present and waiting. This caused significant stress and disruption to what was meant to be a smooth, enjoyable event for my mother's 60th birthday. While the chefs were friendly and provided a decent service, it was evident that the assistant chef was new and less experienced.

They have thicker cuts of fish, compared to other sushi places. Just FYI, this is not really a dine- in restaurant. You can either order online through their website or order from a kiosk, and your food is placed in a locker for you to pick up. You can can choose to eat there in the food court or take it home. The food court is very empty and kind of sad, though, so I recommend just taking it home. If you can pick it up yourself, I definitely recommend doing that instead of ordering through Uber Eats or DoorDash. There is a pretty significant price difference with delivery, I believe around $8-$12 depending on what you order. They are unfortunately now temporarily closed.

In terms of personal taste, the cold smoked hamachi, scallop and bluefin tuna are some of the most outstanding and affordable pieces I've had anywhere. As someone who doesn't shy away from the 8-piece salmon sashimi set at Kroger when an insatiable craving for sushi hits, I find hamachi and bluefin tuna to be more difficult to find in a non-sit-down-fancy-sushi-restaurant setting. Kaisen changes that. The combination of smokiness with the butteriness of hamachi is soothing. The bluefin tuna is garnished with a tiny dollop of salted scallions that elevates the experience. The scallops have a subtly sweet flavor that I don't always find even at fancy sushi restaurants. These are my favorite scallops I've had in recent memory. I am usually a salmon toro over salmon person, but I actually prefer the salmon here at Kaisen. The toro cut is a bit thicker/chewier without much more of the signature fattiness and smoothness in salmon belly that I typically look for. Please try. You will not be disappointed.
