This place was recommended to me, so I checked it out during the pandemic and stopped by for take-away. Tried the chicken tikka kebab and the veggie samosas. They were both delicious but the samosas were particularly good, and the fries they were with were also fantastic, hot and crispy. The restaurant was sadly empty with all the seating put away due to the shut down, but the proprietor was very carefully checking vaccine status of everyone who came by, even to pick up food. He was very sad about the pandemic; sounds as if they're really struggling, and have lost a lot of money during all the shut downs. Afghan Chopan Kebab is another place that doesn't get much, if any, of the limelight. It blows my mind how so many hidden gems are in town, yet every time I go to one, it's empty. This visit back in the summer was no different. Maybe because it was an early Tuesday evening? No clue. I love what they've done to the front as there's now a couple tables outside to sit and enjoy the food. I kind of wish that this faced the back of the building instead of the front where all you get to see is the endless amount of cars zooming by but that's beside the point. It's awesome to be able to sit outside now. The menu's have got a nice upgrade since my original visit. Love how there's an accompanied picture for each dish. - Spinach boulany ($9.95) - whole wheat crust stuffed with spinach and spices. Pan fried and served with yogurt and dry mint. These could have been a bit more crispy but the inside was flavourful and nicely stuffed with spinach. - Kebab platter ($39.99) - a mixed variety of skewers of chicken, beef and seekh kebabs. Two patties of chaplee kebab and three pieces of chicken legs marinated with herbs and special spices. Comes with a small rice and fries. The description fails to mention it also comes with a side of salad AND samosa's. Huge amount of food. Come hungry, really hungry. I believe the kebab platter (regularly $45.95) is on special Monday and Tuesday, which is an incredibly good deal. What can I say about the kebab platter that I haven't said before? Delicious, aromatic rice. Crispy fries worth eating. Meat on meat on meat. Seriously, you'll be carnivored out by the time you finish with this platter. My only wish is that they gave more of the accompanied sauces, but you can always ask for more. - Fresh fruit - we wanted to try their baghlava but they were out for the day. Our waiter/the owner was the nicest guy and brought out some fresh fruit and a dessert instead (almost like a custard/rice pudding). A nice mix of pineapple, grapes and honeydew. The honeydew wasn't ripen enough but c'est la vie. Next time you're in Chinatown and looking for a new place to eat, give ACK a go. Delicious. read more

I really wasn't looking forward to eating here - my vote was for Padmanadi just down the street. But the rest of the family wanted to try something new, so I decided to go in with an open mind - wow, am I ever glad that I did. It's nothing "wow" decor-wise, but this little family-run spot is very warm and welcoming. You won't feel like you're in a hot spot, but more of a hidden gem - and I do mean hidden. Forget those up-and-coming spots along 118th (not that they're not great), you need to swing by Afghan Chop House if you really want to be in-the-know. There was only one other table in here on a Saturday night! My husband and I split the kebab platter for two. OH. MY. GOD. It might have been an even better meat coma than I experienced at Pampa. Chicken, beef, and chicken-beef kebabs all on top of super delish rice. It was huuuuuge, too, especially for $35. Which meant tons of leftovers for the both of us! In summary: EAT HERE. read more

And the owner started scolding us because we were 5 min late. He said now he needs more time to reheat the food. This was a lie, he just hadn't finished preparing the food and tried to blame it on us. The restaurant did not have plastic disposable containers. So they used some cheap Melamine trays. They demanded that we return those trays later and asked a 50$ deposit for the tray. And they said the deposit will be taken from the credit card but returned in cash. We said "This is too much hassle" and the owner got offended responded with "NO FOOD FOR YOU, GET OUT" read more

We dropped in on a Friday night around 6pm. There were no other customers, but more and more people came over the hour we were there, which was nice to see. I think the decor was basic but there were nice touches. The seating and tables were plain, but there was some absolutely beautiful Afghan art all around the restaurant. There are only six items on the menu, and since we hadn't visited before, we went for the $35 platter to share to get a taste of everything they have to offer. We also had a "small" order of delicious, fragrant, complex Afghan rice, which was an additional $10. The platter was massive and came with five different meats, chicken and beef. The chicken kebab was my favourite - amazingly tender. But everything was good. There was a big heap of salad in the middle, too. And I can't forget about the great, gigantic piece of Afghan bread that came with everything. The total was $48 before tip and we got four meals out of it. Not bad! I should note that I don't think they serve alcohol there. I probably wouldn't have noticed unless I overheard a man asking if they had a house wine and the waiter said no. I then noticed that there is a physical bar, but there was mostly pomegranate juice behind it. I didn't see alcohol anywhere or a drinks menu. As for service, I found it to be good. The man who came to our table was also, I'm assuming, the cook as he was going between the dining area and the kitchen. He was always smiling, asking us if everything was alright, and just generally a nice guy. The wait time for the food wasn't long, I think about 15 minutes. I wasn't keeping track. There was only one downside to the restaurant, and it's not something I usually comment on, but I have to. The bathroom was probably the dirtiest, messiest bathroom I've seen in North America. When I walked in there was a huge painting laying on the floor in front of the stalls. There were paper towels everywhere and things knocked over. There were only two stalls and both of the toilets were just gross. One of them was unusable. I'm not sure why it was in such a state, but I really hope this was just a bizarre situation and not the norm. All in all, I would still consider this place to be a hidden gem and you should definitely check it out. 4.5/5 read more

Terrible. Went there since there was a line at Padmanandi's and decided to give this guy a chance as I'm quite the fan of rice, yogurt and kabobs. Service was understaffed on Friday night. VERY slow service - waitress disinterested. Waitress had no idea what the menu contained and always referred to the kitchen. The plates we got looked nothing like the pics on the menu. The amount of meat was not representative and there was a mountain of simple rice in the middle despite the pics. We paid 65$ for approximately 10$ worth of food for 2 people. When we asked the owner pointed and said "this finish and that finish". We took lamb and kabobs. There were supposed to be other vegetables and fries they put none of that. Neighbors were afghans and had plenty on their platter. Our vegetarian plate contained half of what was listed and when we asked guess what : " finish" ....however all know not finish when time comes to pay. I admit I look like a dumb white local but appearances are somewhat deceiving....I'm quite the expert in Persian/Afghani food mainly because I lived for 25 years out East...and I'm NOT a local. In a nutshell this place is a scam. The owner is a dishonest discriminating human being that when he's caught in the act of trying to rob you he tries to make it up for by bringing exactly 4 pieces of candy and stale tea. What a disaster. We should of walked out when the waiter was texting or doing something other than greeting us at the reception. Then he didn't think to ask us for drinks. Then the drink we had to ask for shows up as the wrong drink! then the right one comes with a dirty rim. The bread served with the yogurt dish was cold. We tried their special mixed kebab platter and we couldn't have been happier! The kebabs were freshly made and served with hot oven-baked bread. The service was not very fast (probably because they were baking the bread and making the kebabs right there), but the staff were very friendly. The place does not look very trendy or chic, but the great food makes up for it. I will definitely go back to Chopan Kebab House for more kebabs! read more

Very unprofessional staff and above all very unprofessional and rude manager. We went there once, the owner lied to us and said it is dine in only, when we order rice and some Kabab, he instructed his staff to take out our food from the self serving buffet area which was really awkward and weird. The staff was pretending that we cannot see him, it looked as if he is stealing food from the buffet area. At the end he charged us a lot which I refused to pay. The quality is horrible. Truly a Mom + Pop place, that makes great kebobs. Doesn"t look like they've done much design-wise since taking over the space, but it is clean and bright. The owner didn't turn on the light at the counter so that I cannot see the bill amount clearly. Instead of giving me the credit card machine he rotated the machine and asked me to tap credit card, he made sure that I could not see the amount in the credit card machine. After I paid I noticed an extra amount and I asked what was that for, he said it was tip, so he charged 10% tip without my permission . And he gave the excuses that people from my ethnicity don't give tip but his back-home people give tip and which is why he charged tip automatically as a service charges and that he is an engineer, he gave some more reasons and explanations that does not make any sense. Only Afghani good I've ever had and left great impression. Place is clean and the food is amazing. It is a bit heavy and not the best for anyone on a strict low carb/fats diet but you might just find it worth it . I normally get the Seekh Kebab or the Kitchi Qurut. Both are fantastic. All the portion sizes are great. Could easily be shared with two or more people. read more

We went for Family Day dinner and were not disappointed. Mr. Sana greeted us and was very courteous and kind. We got salad, samosas and 3 breads on the house. We entered the restaurant and surprisingly were the only customers. We order the mixed kebab platter (35$) which was more than enough for three of us. Here everything is cooked to the order including the fantastic afghan nan bread. As a result you should wait around half an hour for the food. However, after the wait you will be surprised by the taste and juiciness of the kebabs. In middle of our dining the chef brought us another type of bread, fresh from oven. It was one of the best flat breads that I have tried in Edmonton ( you can buy them for 3$). With this price and quality, I highly recommend this place and cannot wait to take all my friends there. read more

I would give the food here about 3.5 stars but the food wasn't the problem. I came here for the first time with a bunch of coworkers for lunch, about 18 of us. That's big business for this restaurant which otherwise would have had just a few occupied tables had we not been there. We ordered 5 of the Afghan Chopan Platters which comes with rice. This should have been enough as one of the other guys occasionally goes with his family of 4 and gets one order of the platter. After the platters were brought out, they brought out 5 additional rice dishes which was the same as the stuff on the platter. We thought this was included in the price but apparently not. When the bill came they charged us an extra $55 for the 5 rice dishes that no one had ordered. They definitely took advantage of the large group by bringing out extras, then charging us for it. I had no idea this happened until I got back to the office and talked to some of the others. Pretty sure other small restaurants would appreciate our business. Instead they took advantage. The reason I gave them a 1 is for many reasons. 1 being I specifically ordered "4 pieces of large Afghan bread" which I have also gotten from them before and 2/3 times they have given me 2 pieces of plain naan bread.. When I called the first time around, they said they had run out of the Afghan bread that day and me being nice just let it go. This time around, I was extremely frustrated and decided to call in. I was told by the lady that answered that I'd get a call back and nothing. On top of that the recipie they normally use for the mantu and korma was so different, there was way too much salt and they had switched up some of the ingredients as if they had run out of their ingredients and were just substituting. Now I have no issues if something has run out, but I appreciate communication so I can order something different or cancel my order. But honestly with Afghan Chopin Kebab, the communication is absolutely terrible and although I was a fan of a couple of their dishes, I don't even know if I'll be getting that same dish again. I have mixed feelings on this place. There were parts of our meal that were good, and there were some that were not so good. We went on a Saturday evening and it was about 1/4 full at best. But during our meal there were people coming and going so it wasn't completely dead. Our table had a half drank glass of water on it. Not a good start, lol. We ordered the samosa's. Best I have had yet. They were very, very good and for this one reason we will return. We ordered the Kebab Platter and it was massive. Plenty for two, maybe even 3 people. It was decent, but I like kebabs that are moist. A lot of them were dried out like they were cooked too long. The food was very tasty. I love this type of food, however I have had better kebabs in town. The service was very friendly, she was decent. Prices were good as well. I keep telling my friends about this place because the food is great and the people among the nicest I've ever seen run a restaurant. The prices are also very low. We were completely ignored by staff the entire time we were there. The place was freezing cold. Many people showed up after we did, got their food first, paid and left long before we decided to finally leave because it had been over an hour since anyone had come to our table. An hour of trying to get to go boxes for the rest of our food. Easily could have dine and dashed and no one would have noticed. All three groups eating at the restaurant were seated basically right next to each other and every time the man(i think the owner) who was waiting tables came over he completely ignored us. Food tasted good minus the wilted lettuce in the salad. Service so abysmal it completely devalues any points the place gets on good tasting food. Not to mention it's winter warm the place up. I would have given this restaurant no star if I could. Today was my second time at this Restuarant and there was just me and my work colleague in the entire restaurant. The entire restaurant was empty just like the first time.There is one person serving and preparing the food since there is no traffic. I ordered the chapli kabab plate , the meat was dry and the beef tasted old. I informed the waitress but there was no acceptance to my concern. I had ordered the lamp shank the last time which tasted even worse and I couldn't eat. This place serves halal and that's why my buddy brings me to this place every time. Nice place hidden away on 101 St. It isnt the nicest looking place to eat, but the food is amazing. For the price, the amount of food you get is plenty. The owner was nice enough to give the 6 of us free afghan candy on our way out (which isnt free), and I thought it was a kind gesture and leaves me with a good impression. We ignored the bad reviews and visited Afghan Chopan Kebab relying on the good reviews. Good reviews said the food was fresh. Bad reviews said the meat was tough. May be I had the same luck as those who wrote the bad reviews. None of the meat items were fresh. The tandoori chicken and the chapli kebab looked like they were cooked more than once. The chapli kebab even smelt old. We were the only customers for a long time. The restaurant was too cold. It was also a bit smelly. The food was either served cold or got cold very quickly due to the low temperature maintained in the restaurant. One previous reviewer said that even the naan bread is cooked after his order. The pictures they uploaded confirm that. In my case, the naans looked like to me as if they were bought from stores. They were served probably microwaved and got very hard after ten minutes. One reviewer said they took half an hour to prepare the food, which is definitely a good thing. For us, they brought all the four different kebab, salad, kabuli pilau (was stale too) and the naan within ten minutes. On the plus side, the people were very nice. I am keeping my fingers crossed and waiting to see what the future reviewers say. read more

I was satisfied with my first visit to this restaurant. We looked at the reviews beforehand and we noticed that they were mixed. They were from "raving" to "never again". We decided that we should try this restaurant out for ourselves and write a review based on our experience. We ordered the kabab platter which was quite good. The platter had enough food on it for the three of us who were eating it and we were quite full. I would give it a rating of 3.5/5. We ordered chicken wings but they were nothing special. They tasted fine.The service was good. The server who received us was quite friendly and attentive to our requests and was prompt. I noticed that when we received our cups for drinking, there was a lipstick stain on the rim. Yikes! Overall, our experience was alright. For next time, I have enough confidence that I can take my wife along. read more
