ROY UTAH - They Quoted $120... Charged $180. Then THEY Called the Police.‍‍ I'm sharing this so other pet owners -- and even small businesses -- can avoid this kind of situation. This isn't about money or bashing anyone. It's about fairness, transparency, and helping a local business understand what Utah's consumer-protection laws actually require. My wife took our Newfoundland-Poodle mix, Bear, in for grooming. She was quoted "Between $60 and $120", no mention of "plus" or open-ended pricing. Later that day, when the groomer called to say Bear was ready, the price had jumped to $180. That's when she asked me to go pick him up. Since that's a 50% increase over our quote I wanted more info on their pricing practices. How they price etc. Before going, I called the groomer as a random potential customer -- just to see if their quotes were consistent. They told me the exact same thing: "between $60 and $120." When I asked, "So no more than $120?" they said, "Yeah, around there." Still no mention of "plus." And especially no mention of a potential 50% increase When I arrived, the total was again $180, and they suddenly claimed the quote had always been "$120+." That wording had never come up before. I stayed calm and polite, explaining that Utah law says they have to get "express authorization" before going over an estimate -- not to argue, but to help them understand. They didn't want to hear it and got defensive and talked over me. They even threatened that if I didn't pay the full $180, they'd refuse future service and "warn other groomers" -- which, aside from being petty, actually crosses into retaliation and potential defamation, especially since I was simply standing on facts and consumer-protection policy. I offered to pay the $120 plus a $20 kennel fee -- $140 total -- which felt more than fair as it was above the quoted price. They said they were cash-only (something never mentioned earlier), so I left to grab cash. When I came back, the police were already there. ‍‍ After paying the $140 based on their quote plus kennel fee of an hour, I stayed respectful and just explained what happened. The officers were great -- they confirmed it was a civil issue, seemed concerned for others as well and said I was within my rights to pay what was fair and report the issue to the Utah Division of Consumer Protection or Better Business Bureau if I wanted. I paid the $140, thanked the officers, and left peacefully. Honestly, I wouldn't have minded paying $180 if extra work was truly needed -- I get that big dogs take effort. But what concerns me most, especially after reading other Google reviews describing multiple issues with rudeness and similar issues of deception , is that this seems to be their standard practice. We can afford a surprise charge, but not everyone can. I share as I don't want someone on a fixed income get blindsided like that. A simple phone call would have solved everything. I'm posting this to help others avoid the same headache -- and hopefully to encourage clearer communication. Transparency builds trust. That's all this is about. The good news: Bear's fur is fine. But their customer service & the way I was treated today led me to this review to help others avoid similar situations mentioned in reviews. I have a large predominantly outdoor dog. The first time I brought our Bernese Mountain Dog to get groomed, it was her first time ever. They charged me $70 & won me over with their customer service. I don't bring my dog in every 12 weeks, because she isn't a doodle & she's outside. Our last appointment was 6 months ago. I noticed her coat shedding & preparing for the winter, so we made an appointment. By the time we got her in, she was ready for a much needed cut. I called the day before to check on the price, since my teenager was dropping off & picking up. She told me she couldn't give me a price without looking at her. I asked if $100 was okay since they require cash or check. The receptionist said that should be plenty. My daughter dropped off the dog, and the receptionist said, "that'll be more than $70 today." They also mentioned our dog would be done around 1:30 pm. When I received the text message to pick her up they said the total amount was $120, I only had one hour to pick up my dog instead of the normal two hours, and any time after 1:05 pm was going to add on kenneling fees. I had to check my daughter out of school, since she timed it with her class & would've originally had plenty of time. She had to find $20 cash, since I hadn't given her enough. And I had the stress of being gone & busy, yet worried about how much more they'd charge me if my daughter was late. I called wondering why it increased so much, and explained that my daughter picking up didn't have anything over $100 because I had called yesterday. The person on the phone was VERY rude! She told me multiple times "because of my dog's condition" as if we had been neglecting our dog. They can charge more money if your dog isn't getting groomed every 12 weeks. But $50 more when the original price is $70??? She told me that I could go somewhere else if I didn't like it. My daughter went to pick up our dog. She was welcomed with a warm greeting until they learned which dog was hers. The demeanor of the receptionist immediately changed. I am a dental hygienist & we don't charge extra if someone comes in for a cleaning after being overdue 1+ year with more build up. I was surprised that it increased $50 because she didn't have poop or weeds matted into her coat. She was in a similar state to when she first came in for her first grooming appointment with them. They did cut her hair nice, but she didn't smell like she was bathed well like she normally does. Nor did she have a cute bow. Hopefully it was just a bad day for them, but I would never treat a customer like that regardless of my workload. And I was expecting my dog to look & smell better than previous appointments with the increase in cost. But that didn't happen. read more

Way overpriced, terrible grooming, terrible customer service! I asked for a quote, gave my dogs breed, coat type and weight. They quoted me $80-120. When I walked in they saw my dog and didn't tell me that they'd charge more based on his size. When it was time to pick him up they said the total was $180!! When I asked why they said his coat was difficult to groom. I told them that's the most expensive grooming service he's ever had and their attitude was "oh well, sucks for you". They were extremely dismissive and rude, I felt like they were bullying me around so I'd stop asking about the surprise increase. My husband picked him up and he as well asked about the $60 price increase without our consent or knowledge. They were rude to him as well and raised their voices threatening to tell all the groomers in the area that we refuse to pay full price. My husband made a post in the Roy Facebook page to warn others of their shady business practices and terrible customer service. There were MANY others that posted their stories of how horrible affordable pet grooming treats customers and pets, with a few saying they've witnessed them rough handling the dogs while grooming. They made a post in their Facebook page that was full of lies. They said my dog was more than 85lbs and that's why they charged me more. When I posted pictures of his vet records showing he weighs 83 lbs and calling them out on their lies with proof they blocked me and deleted my comments. They cut his coat down a lot shorter than what I asked them to do. When I dropped him off they kept asking if I wanted him shaved down and I kept telling them no, just a trim and that I like it long. read more

One man's opinion. For one thing if you are a minute or so late they may charge you a huge fee for SO CALLED KENNELING! Also they didn't listen to just what I wanted more than once. Check in and out was extremely disorganized. Two pups, one was shaved to skin when 1" was requested, the other pups cut was uneven and unfinished. Dogs seemed traumatized when I picked them up when they are usually excited to see family and go home. read more

I've been bringing my beagle here for a few months. I was decently happy with the service and the friendliness of the people working there. But this is the second time my dog has had "kennel cough" and looks like death. So they may be affordable but the vet bills won't be. They need to clean and sanitize far better than they are. I will never bring my dog Lars here again. read more

Worst pet grooming EVER! I asked for a puppy cut for my dog. Then the lady questioned me for about 10 minutes on what a puppy cut is! Isn't she supposed to be the professional! Should the customer be telling the groomer how to do her job? She said it would take 2 hours, and she'll call me. After 2 1/2 hours I called her, she wasn't done with my dog. 3 1/2 hrs later, I called, I'm getting worried now. Still not ready. Finally after 4 hours, she's finished. She didn't do what I asked for AT ALL! I had specifically asked that the dogs ears be shaved underneath for the air-flow, and they weren't touched. There were lines on her legs where they shaved her, completely uneven! Bit's here and there where they missed completely, even of areas like the chest! Hair still in her eyes! Which I asked specifically for them to watch! And I asked for a little bang in the front- think of how a schnauzer has eyebrows, they left the entire head unshaved. She looked stupid. So imagine and totally shaved dog with 3" of hair on the entire head. People made fun of her calling her either Elvis or Ringo. Thankfully the dog doesn't know or care, but really! I had just moved to the area, so I don't think they had some personal agenda against me or my dog, but if I had lived here, I would have thought someone HATED my guts. Because why else would you do what they did to her? I had to go somewhere else to get her hair cut fixed. I WILL NEVER RETURN! Even if I got free $1000 worth of grooming. I took my pitbull pup to them for a bath and nail filing. My appointment was at 1145 so i got there a few minutes early. They were nice and took him back to get cleaned, they said it wouldn't be too long and they'd call me when he's done. So i waited in the car till 1 and went back in to ask what the status was. They were all eating lunch and talking (didnt acknowledge i was even there) so i just said im here to pick him up. The one girl was like "oh uhh ill go start on him now" So my puppy sat in a kennel for over an hour while i waited outside. COMPLETE WAISTE OF TIME. And worste of all. They brought him back and he wasnt dry and his nails were so rough. They clipped them but didnt file them down. Shitty service, bad atmosphere and dirty. I will never go back. I've been here with my cat two times more since my first review... He's never going there again. Not only do they never follow my directions (leave the tail, don't cut near his face), but they also do not call when he's ready. So he just has to sit in his carrier until I come in to check on him. They've raised their prices for cats, too. And the included claw trim? Nonexistent. I would rather pay more somewhere else for quality pet care than low-ball it at this place. I have been taking my dogs here for several years and have always been pleased with the service. However, this last time I took them in for a bath and brush ( not a cut or shave), my dog came home with large cuts behind both ears!!! I'll not be taking my dogs back ther...EVER!! read more

I'm also baffled as to the bad reviews. I've taken my little Yorkie Gertrude there 3 times now. They've been fantastic. Cut is always great, and they are very polite and friendly. I've tried at least 3 other groomers before I found them. The other groomers were terrible! I'm happy with Affordable Pet Grooming and would recommend them. I only wrote a review because I googled them to get the number for another cut, and saw bad reviews. Again, my experiences have been great. read more

If you care about your animals you will not take them here to get groomed. I'm going to have to take her to another groomer to get her fixed because of the neglect. She is uneven and looks nothing like the picture I picked out even after saying, "no problem." I will not be returning. It looks like a blind person clipped my dog. Horrible. I've brought my two dogs here twice, and they've done a great job both times! They did exactly what I asked them to do, and the dogs looked and smelled great - in fact, they did a better job trimming around their eyes and feet than the much more expensive groomer I used to go to! I feel like their pricing is incredibly low for what they do, and they really seem to love dogs and be really good with them. read more

I've been taking my big orange Norwegian Forest Cat here for a few years to be groomed. They are always fast and do a good job. They are nice to the animals while they groom them and their prices are very reasonable. read more
