If I could give this company negative stars, I would. I was quoted and given an expected time range of showing up.....they never showed. Not only did they never show, they screen my calls and never got back to me. The fact that is has taken me this long to write this is a miracle in itself. They gave a time frame for showing up, we were excited they stepped up to help with a last-minute move of a partial move. We prayed for this to final turn around for us that day.. and waited and waited and waited. Communication was very bad, John (the owner) just wasn't able to keep a line of communication with his clients. Then to my contiune 30 minutes check in to get a ETA...John told me he was leaving the office. I asked for a contact number. He said his guys do not need harrassed on a job. I then get an email... hour and a half later... "MOVE CANCELED" . I was left hanging with no options. I turned to Craigslist... found a solution. This company was given to me by a gal at the UHAUL to get bodies when you got a truck.... UHAUL needs to remove them from their reliable list. BEWARE !!! read more

Holy unprofessionalism, folks. I was actually hoping this would go well for me, but sadly it did not. I had an issue with the apartment I was living in and got a new one with about six-ish days between the day I put in my notice to vacate and then got new keys to a new place. I called John and his crew at Affordable Movers LLC and he was (what I thought was) on point. He was sympathetic to what happened, gave me a quote, and got me scheduled for today 8/31/19 between 2 and 4. I did not get a confirmation call yesterday and so I've called seven times between 9:45 am this morning and now. They just never showed. I have left voicemails and sent multiple emails are they are nowhere to be found. I had to put out to another moving company, quite literally last second. Don't bother wasting your time with this place. The quotes are enticing but there is not anything that can be done when LITERALLY nobody shows up. I've also since found the way the owner, John, responds to unhappy customers online not only vile and repulsive (but say it again with me, friends) UNPROFESSIONAL. So I can only hope he responds to my reviews as harshly as others. We shall see. read more

I submitted information to receive moving quotes from various companies and used two different company websites to increase my chances of a successful move. During that submission, I provided a different phone number on the second request that was better suited my needs. Almost immediately I received a harassment based email response from John. Had a similar experience last year to Katrina. Basically my GF received a confirmation call about the move the night before. Day of they were supposed to come between 7-8am. No one showed. We called every hour until noon, until finally someone answered. Apparently a truck broke down and they were trying to get to us, but that they would be delayed and had no estimate. They said in order to get an estimate, that would only slow them down, so they would call us when they were coming. A few hours later we called again, and the owner flat out lied to us that he had called that morning and the movers had come to the house but we weren't present, and that he had called multiple times. There are no record of these phone calls and we were present at the home during this time and no one rang the bell. After a few more hours (it's now 5pm, and we were informed they would come between 7-8am), I called multiple times until I finally got ahold of the owner again. Their offices had closed so the number was going directly to his cell. He then berated me, insulted me and my girlfriend, blamed the entire situation on us for not answering our phones or being home, and said if I called again or questioned/interrupted him during the call (he basically wanted to yell at me for 10 minutes) he would tell his crew not to come (interesting, since he said he couldn't get us an estimate on when the crew would come b/c calling them to ask would slow them down too much). Needless to say they finally showed up around 7:30pm. We asked the head of the movers there about what happened (the actual movers were quite nice and friendly). He confirmed that a truck had broken down, and that they had never called or come that morning. We understand that things can happen in life. A truck broke down, and all we wanted was honest communication (or any communication). But the utter lack, and then lies by management (specifically the owner) means we'll never be using them again. Failed to show for scheduled move - said truck broke down and was over 2 hours behind for next day afternoon appointment and hadn't loaded proper packing material for job which added more time to expected delay. Owner talks over you - they cost me hundreds $ in late penalities and job was canceled by owner when I responded unfavorably to 2nd missed deadline. Affordable Movers was recommended by a friend. I read the other reviews and yes the guys showed up late. However, we happened to move on a day in December when there was snow. Every phone call or email we made in preparation was promptly answered. The guys that came out to do the move worked their butts off. I had a similar experience to Katrina and Mark S. and wish I had read the Yelp reviews beforehand. This was the worst moving experience I have ever had, and the following is an abbreviated account of what happened. Movers were supposed to show up between 8 and 9am. By 10am when they had not showed up, I started calling them. There was no answer. Finally around 12:00 I received a call from Dawn who said the truck had a flat and they were waiting for roadside assistance, then they would be on their way. I waited another hour and when they had not showed up, I called again. (They never answered the phone when I called, but would eventually call me back.) This time, the owner, John, called me to say I was not on the schedule. He was not apologetic and questioned who I had talked to (him). I reminded him that he took my deposit and sent me an email confirmation. I had also left messages for the two days leading up to the move and sent an email to confirm. He said he would find someone to move me and they would be on their way. For the rest of the afternoon, no movers would show up, I would call, no one would answer, and eventually they would call me back. At some point there were some heated exchanges. Again, John was not apologetic, was full of excuses, and was impolite. I had called around to look into other movers, U-haul, "You Move Me," etc, but each time John told me someone was on their way, I was convinced they were. The next excuse was that the movers were pulled over by the Dept. of Transportation for an inspection that would take hours. He offered to move us the next day (Saturday) between 2 and 4pm. At that point if they didn't show up, there was no way I could have gotten another moving company. By 5pm, my boyfriend and I started moving stuff on our own. (It was a very short move.) We moved half of the boxes when I received a call from saying his guys were freed up from the Dept. of Transportation and could be there by 7pm. They eventually showed up and moved the rest of my stuff. I have moved a number of times, and this was by far the worst experience ever. There were so many calls back and forth with me saying no one had showed up and John then telling me a different excuse or that someone was on their way. The flat tire was obviously not true. I'm guessing it's the "go to" excuse that they first say, since others have heard the same excuse. I sincerely doubt there was an inspection by the Dept. of Transportation. Very shady operation! Found them on movinghelp.com (which is a joke in itself) and the website says licensed and insured. That's a lie. The movers basically threw my stuff on my the truck, didn't cover anything and stacked my boxes with the ones marked fragile at the bottom! I contacted this company to move a pool table. I explained it was a 8 foot 3-piece table that needed to be disassembled and reassembled. i received a quote for $195. I had an appointment scheduled for yesterday afternoon between 2 and 4 to have it moved. I got a call around 1:30 telling me the earliest they could possibly make it was 4:30. That really screwed up my day so I rescheduled for this morning between 8-9am. They arrived at 8:45 and upon arrival, tried to pick up the entire table and move it. When they realized they couldn't, the driver stepped out, called his boss and came back to tell me it would cost $400 because they had to take it apart and reassemble it. My quote clearly stated it included the disassembly and reassembly. I was really upset. I spoke with the owner. He accused me of not telling him the material of the table. He threatened to have his driver leave if "I didn't like it" and so I told him to leave. He told me to "F*** off and suck his d***" I was absolutely in shock. No one has ever spoken to me like that, especially not a business owner. The driver left and through this entire nightmare, the owner never once apologized for any of the inconveniences. They are called "affordable movers" but the only affordable thing is their up front quote. When they arrive, the costs doubles for unjustifiable reasons. I got several quotes, some from movers who ONLY move billboards tables, and none were over $350. There's nothing "affordable" about $400. They were Completely unprofessional and if I could, I'd press charges on them for the things said to me. I have witnesses if you need justification to what I'm saying. Bottom Line: Absolutely horrifying experience. We broke our move into two pieces because it wouldn't all fit in the truck in one move. We went with Affordable Movers because they were fixed price, and the guy who did the estimate promised they were the best, their two-man crew could do more and faster than any other movers with a three-man crew, blah, blah, blah. Same story as other reviewers. Got a call the night before confirming appointment. Thursday, we waited SIX hours with no show and no phone call. My husband called every half hour, leaving messages at both offices. Nothing. Didn't hear from anyone until the next day and we were told someone had been in a car accident. Someone from the office supposedly had called the wrong customer to let them know they weren't going to show. If that's the case, wasn't the office person tipped off by the repeated messages that we hadn't heard from anyone? Same deal on moving day two. Phone call at 6:30 am telling us they were on their way and would be here by 9:15. (Which is already giving them three hours to drive the 50 miles required to reach our house.) By 11:15 am, they were once again a no show. Once again, no one answered ANY of the phones. This is all made worse by the fact that John Jr was obnoxious when we called and asked for a date change. He refused to change dates, gave us grief about even asking even though we were asking more than the 48 hours required, and now HE's a no show. A*G*A*I*N. When we pointed out that we had been more than understanding when THEY were a no show, he told us that was "no big deal" because it hadn't cost us any money to have him stand us up. John Jr told us that his father is no longer involved with the business, but John Jr continues to impersonate John Sr on the phone. I have no way to no why he does this, but I'm guessing so that he can say you weren't talking to Jr. when you actually were. During our second day of moving, John Jr decided he wanted to be paid in full in the middle of our move, despite the contract saying he wouldn't be paid until the job was finished. We threatened to call the police since he had our belongings on his truck, and he told us to go ahead, because "every time" the police have been called during one of his moves, they have sided with him!! Uhm... "every time"??? Does he pull this scam that often?? Read the contract CAREFULLY. There is a statement that says the customer must give 48 hours notice if they intend to change or cancel. There is NO statement the precludes the moving company from canceling on you with NO NOTICE of any kind. **Also, check with YOUR insurance company. The moving company is only minimally liable for damage to your belongings -- and John Jr knows it. This whole experience was an 21-day ordeal from start to the finish of the move. We ultimately had to contact a lawyer to get the job done. In my opinion, this guy and his business practices are not okay. Choose ANYONE but them for your move! This moving company went above and beyond for us during a corporate, multi-facility move. They unknowingly walked into a basically unpacked office and helped me to organize, pack and efficiently unload. This move included disassembly and reassembly of desks, cubicles and other office furniture. For what they had to work with, these guys did a remarkable job, smiling the whole time. Run for the hills, do not rely on them for your move. I had a confirmed appointment for this past Saturday, May 30. I felt very good after speaking with someone, receiving a quick itemized estimate, then a call and email request for confirmation on my end. I thought, what great professionalism. During the call I was told that I would receive a call between 7:30-7:45am again on the day off, to confirm the 9-10am apt for Sat. I was told it would be closer to 9am. Wow, I thought, they are really on it. When I did not get the call, I should have known better. Well, I thought, I didn't get the call, so I guess that they are going to just show up. At 9:10am I called them just to make sure that everything was good since I didn't get that first call. Well, I called them multiple times and emailed them, with no answer or call back. At 10:30am, I was in panic mode. I called around and got a reference for some "junk haulers" that could do it at the last minute. I had to go with them because I did had to move, and didn't have better options. I did end up with some scratches and nicks on my furniture, because they were not professional movers. However, they helped me and I was appreciative. I was a bit disappointed with the scratches, but didn't tell them. Well, Affordable Movers finally call me after lunch time, talking about flat tires and other issues. I WAS ABSOLUTELY LIVID!!! I understand that emergencies come up and things happen. I would have been disappointed but willing to work with them if I had been informed. But THE UNPROFESSIONALISM OF NOT CALLING ME OR RETURNING MY CALL TO LET ME KNOW WAS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. A move is a huge deal that has a schedule, which impacts many other things when a timeline slips. I could not believe that I did not at least receive a call. When I mentioned that to the representative that called me, he told me that he didn't have a phone to call me earlier. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I moved on June 28th 2014 from Catonsville MD to Rosedale MD..from a small one bedroom apartment to the basement of a large townhouse..other moving companies like A-Z movers quoted me 700$ and Starving students wanted 105$ an hour with a minimum of 4 hrs + gas and miles....I knew starving only used 2 movers so I decided not to go to them...most of the reviews for affordable were negative but they all said 4 movers which is what I was looking for so I filled out the online thingy and was quoted 365$...that sound great but I knew it would probably come with some BS...I called & told them the date and had to pay a 75$ deposit which would deduct from the grand total so on moving day I only had to pay 290$..MAKE SURE U ITEMIZE EVERYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE MOVED., this company charges by the items not by the hour which could be a gift and a curse...I did forget to mention a couple lamps but I chose to move them myself..(whatever you can do yourself do it and save money)...so I only needed the living room set and bedroom set moved and 12 boxes...so on moving day they said the drivers arrive time would be between 2 & 4pm and I would receive a call from the driver around 1:15 pm...the office called me the day before and confirmed everything...so I did get the call from the driver at the right time and everything was set...they did arrive late at 5pm...I was not upset I was moving so my entire day was clear...just as expected I got 4 guys in a large truck...but I did not like the checking off inventory part.. The mover kept bargaining for a tip (which I had already read up on about the etiquette of tipping movers..it's 10$ per person plus 10$ on the total...so I gave 50$ tip he seamed happy with that....but what if it wasn't that much was he not gonna move anything..he told my that the bottom of my bed which is a metal frame that folds up was not mentioned but it was ok...I did put queen bed head board and footboard on the list I would think the legs support would be a given...he also mention usually they charge for padding the glass tops to my end tables but he was gonna let me slide on that...and again I did mention 3 glass tops and on their site it clearly states no charge for padding...but I think he was trying to make me feel like he was helping me out so he could get that nice tip...I hired movers not used car salesman but I digress .they should change the way they handle that inventory part it is offsetting...so I paid cash 290$ + 50 =340 before they even touched a thing...I initialed a few spots on some paperwork... Received a receipt and they got to work...they did not ask or expect me to help I started my cleaning and stuff I had to do...once the truck was loaded they wanted to follow me to the new address which I didn't really care for and like I thought once we arrived the driver was saying one of the roads we took they were not suppose to have a truck on...I kinda felt like they didn't have the new address or mapped out how they would get there so I did feel that was a little unprofessional...not like they couldn't have pulled over and called me for that info but still I drive a small saturn I don't notice or even care about what roads trucks are not allowed to be on..once at the new place they removed everything and said a couch would not fit in the basement they were afraid of damaging the wall so I moved it myself afterwards just fine...I took away one star for the lateness and awkwardness of the inventory check and financial part...I hope they give their drivers a Tom Tom so they can meet the customer at the new address instead of following them...I would use the company again and I plan to..I would also refer them. Tried to hire them for a simple, small move. The initial arrangement went well and we were scheduled for a few days later. The day of during the window we were expecting them, they call to say they will be late. No problem. Then they call back to say they are on their way, should be 30-45 min. Great. 3 hours later and they still hadn't showed. We tried calling several times and no one would answer. Finally get a hold of someone, almost 8 hours after our original appointment and get a bunch of excuses about problems with the truck and a lot of bitching about their earlier customer. Um . . . ok. Unprofessional, but we give them the benefit of the doubt and reschedule. They call the night before our rescheduled move and ask if we still want them to come out. Because, you know, it might rain. Are you serious? Luckily in the meantime, another mover I had contacted replied and we made other arrangements. Ended up being less expensive and MUCH better service. My move was almost exactly like ML except some of my expensive items was destroyed and they refused to acknowledge it. Also one of the movers appeared to be on something. Our appointment time was between 12 and 2pm, they didn't arrived until 5pm and didn't finish until 9pm. They didn't set up all the furniture and left 15 boxes in garage for my husband and son to move later. Some of those boxes were label food and should have been moved to the kitchen. When I complained about the service received to the owner the next day, he was rude, nasty and hang the phone up on me. I was treated as if I was the victim and not the consumer. This moving company is known for giving you a fixed price on the items you move, which one might think is preferable to an hourly rate, since you know up front what you will be paying for the move. Unfortunately, after reviewing the inventory, they decided to increase the price, and refused to move the items unless we agreed to the new price. There were no additional items to be moved that were not listed on the inventory, but a matter of semantics, on such items as 2 end tables in the bedroom, which they decided should be called night stands, and a hutch that they decided should be called a curio cabinet! It wasn't a lot of extra money, but the principle of the matter. After arguing, multiple phone calls, etc, they finally agreed to the original price, especially since we actually had less boxes than originally noted on the inventory. The move itself went quickly, and the workers were polite and efficient. The next issue was that the movers demanded the full payment, which was a cash payment, prior to finishing the move, and refused to finish bringing in the furniture, until they were paid in advance. This was never discussed in advance, and clearly one shouldn't pay until the job is complete, and items examined to make sure nothing was broken in the move. These unnecessary occurrences made an already stressful situation much worse, and clearly could have been avoided, using some common sense. read more

If your looking for a moving company that doesnt come to move you the day you scheduled for them to move you weeks in advance or would like them to move you 6hrs or 1-2days after the original estimated date and arrival time then they are definitely for you. I scheduled this company to move a few things for weeks in advance the day comes and my whole day was wasted waiting for them and they never came. I had an estinated arrival time of between 12pm-2pm yesterday and when 12:50pm hit i got a phone call from them telling me they were going to be late like a little after 2pm which i was ok with. Until i got another call at 2:55pm telling me they wouldnt be able to move me until 8pm or maybe the next day. They told me that someone that they were moving before me had more things they wanted moved other than what was on their original list and that by law they had to do the job if they were willing to pay. Who moves that late at night? And what law is there stating a moving company have to take a job or take more than what was originally listed? There is no freaking law stating this or stating a moving company can not refuse a job because moving companies are not Md state regulated. So at this point im livid because not only are they late but they were insulting my intelligence. So I ask will I be accomadated for the inconvenience the answer was no. So i decide to look for another moving company. They must have been alerted that i was looking to hire someone else for the job becuase i magically got a call from them,about 40mins after requesting my info be sent to multple companies that would take on the job, telling me that after the load they were about to unload they would be coming straight to me in about 2 1/2 hours. This conversation happend about 4:04pm. 7pm hits and still no movers or a call i call them to find out the progress and no answer. They finally call back about 30mins later stating they were still unloading but was almost done. Needless to say i didnt get a call back from them until 11pm. This company is very unprofessional and are time wasters the amount of time I spent waiting for them I could have moved my things myself or hired someone else for the job to be done. Don't even consider using this moving co. I called them on a Tuesday asking if they would be available for that Saturday. The owner answered the phone and although he was not the friendliest person, he did say they could move us on the date I needed. I gave him the information he requested along with my email address which is where he stated he would be sending my quote for services. I never heard another word from him. By Saturday morning I had made other arrangements of course but just out of curiosity I called his number just wanting to be heard and to ask why no one ever bothered to get back with me. The owner was extremely rude and said he is running "a million dollar company" and "owes me no explanation". I basically just said Wow and told him I obviously would never recommend his company to anyone and I hung up. Immediately I started receiving countless texts on my phone where he proceeded to cuss me and even sent me a "middle finger" emoji. I was floored. Eventually he stepped it up even further with lying by trying to say that he had sent an estimate but I had given him an incorrect email address and so it came back to him and I was a crazy lady who needed to learn my own email address (I have had the same email address for over 20 yrs and have never been accused of stating it incorrectly). He even went so far as to lie and say that he sent it to yahoo, gmail and hotmail (of course omitting the MSN address which it actually is). I then sent a return text stating how this made zero sense as he had my contact # and all he had to do was call me. After being called a few more choice words by this man (I just let him rant) I texted back that I was sure the BBB would be very interested in not only hearing my complaint but also seeing his vulgar and rude texts to me. He lied yet again and said that he had recorded my phone call to him and that he would send that to them. I asked him to Please do so as I knew that I was very polite, yet quite truthful with my complaint. He did not like this at all. A few more rude texts came through from him and I finally texted back that I would say a prayer for him because I felt he could most obviously use it. He finally stopped texting after that. Kindness in life goes a very long way. This man was arrogant, smug, rude, lied, and was just extremely unprofessional, to say the least. My suggestion... stay far away. So I was recommended to this company via my girlfriend because she had an excellent experience on her move. They took everything apart that needed to be moved and put it back together once they got to the new apartment. I asked for their services and the price seemed decent enough. They were scheduled to come between 2-4pm, and also give a heads up call when they were on there way. At 3 pm I gave John a call and he said that i never confirmed the appointment but that he would get his guys to contact me. Side note: the day before i left a detailed message confirming on the appointment. I got the call from one of his moving crews and he tells me that they have a very large job and that they won't be able to make it until 5pm. Just so happens that it would have worked fine but then i got a call at 5 saying that they couldn't make it until 7. Finally they got down to business taking down the beds and other furniture that would be moving. After telling me that everything was set to go on the truck, i locked up the house and returned the keys to the rental office. Upon getting back to my car, one of the movers came to me and said, we forgot a couple of the screws that are used for the headboard. Guess i'm one for forgiveness, because i told the guy not to worry as i could get screws to put the headboard on. We arrived at the new townhouse and they got right to work placing the beds and furniture. Meanwhile, i had my newborn son, simply keeping him out of the way and then the guys said they were all done. Made the payment and they were on their way. 15 mins later i go to use the bathroom and take a look into one of the bedrooms only to find that one of the beds is completely separated..........instantly i called for John the owner and it just so happens that i was sent to voicemail. 5 mins later i received a call from one of the crew members and express my concern. He tells me, "you said it was ok to leave the bed separated." Anger sets in and kindly i say, "no, i told you that i would put the headboard on, not the entire bed." I told him that one of two things should happen, either someone should come out and finish the job or i should receive some of my money back. Instantly he responded, saying, "John is not going to do that." He said, "Me and another guy will come out and assemble the bed." it had been two days, and no word. I went on and put the bed together myself and let go of my desire to seek legal action, but i will definitely say, "They are the worse moving company in the DMV." if you have your choice, pay the extra money for more professional workers that don't smell like cigarette smoke. read more
