The tech, Alex, told me the parts alone would be over $900 to repair the cooktop and some of the needed parts were no longer being manufactured. I was told to buy a new cooktop. My husband, an engineer, didn't agree since the igniter was working, just not shutting off. He ordered GE replacement ignition spark switches for the 5 burners (approximately forty dollars each) and it works great again. I'm out the service fee but I didn't have to pay thousands of dollars for a new cooktop. They were the second appliance repair company I called (the first squirted WD40 on it and left) so I guess these companies are not as knowledgeable regarding gas appliances.
