During a recent visit to the offline by Aerie at the Ross Park Mall store while waiting for our dinner reservation, my 12-year-old niece wanted to browse and potentially make a purchase. Shortly after entering, we noticed a dark-haired employee whispering to a coworker while looking in our direction. This employee then proceeded to follow and observe us throughout the store in a manner that felt suspicious and uncomfortable.
As my niece shopped, the employee positioned herself near us and began unnecessarily refolding already-organized merchandise, clearly as a pretense to monitor us more closely. Her behavior was so obvious that my sisters and I all noticed it independently. We observed that other customers in the store were not subjected to this same level of scrutiny.
Due to this treatment, my sister decided not to make any purchases. We strongly believe this discriminatory behavior was racially motivated. It's deeply disappointing that despite our group being professional, working adults with substantial incomes, we were profiled based solely on our appearance.
This experience highlights a critical need for employee training on unconscious bias and appropriate customer service. All customers deserve to be treated with equal respect and dignity, regardless of their race or ethnicity. Racial profiling has no place in retail or anywhere else, and such behavior only perpetuates harmful stereotypes.
While we chose to handle the situation with grace and maturity, this incident was both hurtful and unacceptable. I hope you'll address this matter seriously to ensure other customers don't face similar discrimination. read more
