Taking your car to a repair shop for diagnostics of the vehicle can be $100 an hour and up so I wanted to see if I could try something from the parts store. The AC system is a sealed system that runs on a refrigerant so if I didn't have an opening in the system or a major part failure it just might be low on refrigerant, that much I know. Autozone had the AC pro refill can with a gauge on it that has two useful measurements for the non mechanic, pressure in the system and if the compressor is running which for a non mechanic is at least somewhat useful. Under $50 with a $15 rebate, $15 store card in the mail which is ok. When I attached the unit to my car I was kind of happy because the gauge showed that the compressor was working and the pressure was not in the green, low actually in the white so a simple refill might work. The can has leak sealer in it so if I have a small leak it might seal it self. As I added the Freon the gauge held pressure which was a good sign somewhat, it's not a complete blow out of the system and this might work for a while. When I was done I ran the AC for 20 minutes and it was still blowing cold so it's not a complete system failure and I might have fixed my AC for under $50, time will tell how long it will last but it's working now. The guy helping me was explaining how to use the product which matches the instructions on the can Incase I couldn't read, still helpful but I can read. The store itself is your typical vehicle parts store with everything vehicle related including tools and tool rental if you only need it once.

The crew that works the night shift currently is not welcoming and makes me want to avoid that location. It wasn't even the fact I bought 5 and parts (brake caliper brackets & gas cap)and 3 of them were the wrong parts. when I brought them back the employee that sold them to me didn't even seem to care and couldn't even give me a fake "I'm sorry man".. you know... for wasting my time and then sending me to a different location to get the caliper brackets... you know because they didn't have them in the first place. Mistakes are gonna happen but they don't have to be so smug about it.. I'll pass up this place and head to NAPA from now on.

I had a certified GM dealership technician install it on my car and my check engine light came back one the next morning with egr low circuit like my original bad one so this was a new faulty part. Patrick sent a new more expensive one over to the dealership and said just pay the difference when you come back with the defective one. When I brought the defective back he did an even swap and and didn't charge me the difference, maybe for my wasted time but what ever it was cool. The new one works as it should and my car is fixed.

I'm not talking about some fake scripted over-friendliness, I hate that. He had a bit of a crotchety air about him that exuded competence and world weariness at the same time. The sort of attitude that comes from knowing what he's doing coupled with having to spend all day talking to people like me who don't. Kind of like those great neighborhood ACE hardware stores of yore. I just bought a 2011 Audi A2, and could not figure out how to put on a front license plate (required in Wisconsin, not in Illinois where I bought it) so that the plate wouldn't bend in a car wash or harsh weather. Instead of treating me like a simpleton, the young fellow here acted like it was a perfectly reasonable question, showed me where the license plate holders were, showed me how to put it on, patiently explained the tool I would need. I spent less than $10 and I don't even need the Youtoobs. Well, I spent only $10 THIS time, I'll be back. One thing the do that I'll need having bought an unusual old car is their computer hook up service, they will read your car's error light and tell you what you need.
