A Tasty Stop at The Doghouse!…read more The Doghouse in Portland offers a fun twist on classic favorites. I ordered two Chicago dogs along with their cheesy kicking fries. The plating and overall presentation were outstanding, and you can tell they take pride in the way their food looks when it hits the table. The Chicago dogs were good, but I felt the build could have been a bit closer to a traditional Chicago style. They were not bad by any means, just not quite at the "great" mark yet for that authentic Windy City bite. The cheesy kicking fries, on the other hand, were full of flavor and definitely hit the spot. I look forward to trying more on the menu next time!

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, even without libations. Lemongrass chicken with sticky rice, wide rice noodles with chicken, and sweet potato fries! made for a lovely meal. Because it's coming from a food truck, you don't get the fancier plating and presentation that a sit down restaurant provides, but nothing detracted from the flavor. The buzzer worked fine for notifying us of pickup time, so everything arrived hot and fresh. It's nice to have a quality Thai cart pod option in the neighborhood. My only advisory concerns parking - the large parking lot next door is, understandably, not for pod customers, and this stretch of SE Division is too narrow to allow for much street parking, so expect to accumulate a few steps when you visit.

Unfortunately, I came away pretty disappointed. Everything except the pork belly was actually really good. The rice had a good texture and separate grains. The fried egg was crispy and had a nice runny yolk. The cucumbers had a nice thickness and crunch to them (could been colder though). The prik nam pla (fish sauce, chiles, maybe a little lime?) was really great -- something about the flavor really popped for me and was tasty. And everything was served hot and fresh. But the pork belly sucked, and that kinda ruined the dish for me. The fatty parts weren't melt-in-your-mouth at all. They were just chewy. The skin wasn't crispy, it also was chewy. The meaty parts weren't juicy at all, they were tough. I dunno, everything about it seemed wrong. And getting the pork belly right seems like a crucial part of the overall dish. After eating maybe 1/3 of the pieces of pork belly, hoping each time that the bad pieces were just outliers, I gave up and just pushed the rest of them to the side while I ate the rest of the dish. Oh well.

After reading reviews and looking at pictures of menus, the prices have certainly gone up a bit. I got a standard breakfast sandwich (Ronald? $8) with a vegetarian patty and a side of biscuit and jam ($4). Appreciated the fact that there was no additional charge for the vegetarian sausage. Sausage had good flavor BUT as you can see in the pic, the patty was pretty heavily burnt so while I could taste the sage and fennel of the sausage, I also got the unpleasant bitterness of the burnt bits. The redemption was definitely the biscuit! Wow! One of the best biscuits I've ever had, buttery and moist. The jam selections seemed impressive. The blueberry vanilla basil jam was delightful though a bit on the sweet side. All in all, I would definitely come back but would probably not get a breakfast sandwich. I would just get me some biscuits :)

There's a variety of meats they offer: chicken, lamb, and beef as well as vegetarian option of falafel. I ordered their falafel rice plate. It came with so much variety: falafels, salad, dolma, hummus, rice, tzatziki & pita. A great way to try everything they offer on the menu. The falafels were decent, the sauce on top made it much more flavorful. The salad came with tomatoes, olives, onions, pickle, and lettuce on top of a dressing. The dolma, rice, tzatziki & pita were okay. The hummus was a letdown, it was missing flavor like some salt. However, the portions for the meal were big and generous. It's filling too.

Honestly, I think of this quiche often. For starters, crust was so buttery and flakey. I love a little roasted corn moment. The green chiles + pepper jack cheese create an underlying layer of heat. Perfect to balance out the sweetness. The quiche is substantial enough to share, though I admit, I could have demolished the whole thing.
