Having experienced fado outside of Portugal I didn't feel strongly that it was a must-do, but when I found myself at night on the street that is known for fado I prioritized it. For the best fado experience I recommend an intimate space, hopefully crowded with people but also with a view to the performers. Tasca do Chico is exactly that place. The doorman told us that space was standing room only, at the (tiny) bar. From there we could see and hear the performers while ordering food and drink. We'd not been there long before we were offered an available seat at a table which caused us to order more food and drink and stay a little longer. The fado here is quite good, made even more enjoyable as the artists change quite frequently; a song or two and a new artist steps forward, all very talented and enjoyable to watch and hear. The fado places tend to have lines out the door and a doorman managing entry. A place across the street looked much bigger but the intimacy is, in my opinion, what makes the experience both unique and special. Even if you have to start at the bar, Tasca do Chico is a great place to experience fado.

The choco frito had a light batter on top and you could tell it was really fresh because it was so light and bouncy. I'm always a sucker for well made scrambled eggs. My favorite dish by far was the arroz de pato. It was packed with smoked duck flavor, and accented with charred sausage and bacon on top. The dishes were on the smaller end, so we ended up getting 5-6 dishes for three people.

After seeing the photos and menu my husband and I came here for lunch on our last day in Lisbon. This cute little tapas restaurant was located only 8 minute walk from our hotel. And every dish tasted great, especially we didn't expect to have such delicious foie gras in Lisbon. It's one of our favorite dishes but unfortunately we can't get it in California. We started eating swordfish ceviche and tuna tartare before taking photos. They also had Monkey 47 gin which is my husband's favorite gin. My sangria tasted perfect for me. Excellent service. When I mentioned to the staff this wasn't our first time, they lit up, and our server sent over a shot of port on the house as a thank you. That kind of warmth sets the tone for the whole meal. The food is genuinely excellent and inventive without being precious about it. We shared a cheese board with honey, beef tartare with tartare sauce and squid ink crisp, tuna tartare with lime mayo and chili, fried potatoes with aioli and salsa brava, and a cauliflower dish done two ways -- puréed and grilled with ponzu marinade and garlic purée. Every dish had real thought behind it, plates that looked as good as they tasted. The cocktails matched the ambition of the food -- I had a smoked peach drink, my friend had a honey concoction, both well-balanced and interesting rather than gimmicky. I have Celiac disease and so navigating food when traveling is always an experience for me and I immediately tagged this place as one we would return to. Sadly, when we went and I said I needed to be gluten-free and asked if they had a separate menu when I only saw three items the server said "We really don't have a lot." ...then why is it advertised in huge letters on the sign outside? Felt strange. The service was exceptional of course - none of this at all is a condemnation of the employees - they were all great and attentive and helpful... I just think the advertising of the menu and branding needs... some rework? The check arrived with major sticker shock for fries, wings, and sangria (that was way way too sweet). We spend a good amount of our disposable income on dining out, with intent, and the value ratio for this one was... off. Environment? Very chill neighborhood "burger bar" type place. There are some couches and lots of art on the walls for purchase and pretty extensive beer list - larger than I had seen at any other restaurant in Alfama and beyond.
