Kolorful Kiln has varying sizes and price points for ceramic items on either side of the front entrance starting at $10. You pay up front at the desk. They accept cash or card. Cash seems best for a small business if you are able. Pam told us we could sit anywhere we'd like & brought out two ceramic color charts showing what each color looks like with 1, 2, & possibly 3 coats after being fired. You can choose as many colors as you want for your creation. We were each given paper towel to set our items on after she dipped them in water. We also received slips of paper on which to write our names, our item description, and our color choices. She also brought us our glaze colors in little plastic pots with lids and cups of water for our brushes. It's nice you can return for up to three months to keep working on your project if you don't finish in one go. They keep your slip of paper and your receipt with your item. It takes about two weeks for your fired and finished piece to be ready for pickup, and they will call when it's ready. Fun and relaxing for all ages and all skill levels. It's also helpful that they offer a restroom if you need it. A lot of businesses in the area will not allow customers you use their facilities. It was hospitable of Pam to also ask us if we were comfortable with the indoor temperature. She also provided handheld fans to dry out projects in between coats and handling. I can't wait to return to finish my project that is in progress. The owner wasn't there, but we heard great things about her while we chatted with Pam. Finally, an interesting shop in Peru. I've found it difficult to find things to do around here. I'll definitely be going back. I'll also update once I complete and finish my little project. I love art and don't do it nearly enough in adult life. It's fun to be creative and feel like a kid again if only for the time I was within the confines of this cute shop/studio. Also, they appear to be open 10-5 during the week and 10-2 on Saturdays. I believe they are closed on Monday or Tuesday but with the possibility of being open if you make an appointment. I saw conflicting hours online and didn't think to check in person. I'm not sure if they do special events, but it would be a good spot for that. I am also not certain whether the building is wheelchair accessible as I only recall steps. There may be another way to enter that I didn't notice.

I rode the Nickel Plate Trail from Kokomo to Peru and back, the southern half of the trail. The…read moresouthern half of the trail is almost completely tree covered and I was in the shade until the sun was directly overhead. I followed up riding the northern half of the trail from Peru to Rochester and back. This segment is even more rural. There were no services north of Peru - no gas stations, restaurants, not even a porta-john. The nearest places were on US31 about 1 mile from the trail. I packed extra water and lunch. The first ~6 miles north of Peru have a tree canopy and after that there are consistently trees on the east side so you can expect shade in the morning and full sun in the afternoon. Peru was a nice lunch stop with a Wendy's, Arby's, and other choices right next to the trail. There's a small shelter with two bench seats in Peru where I had lunch. The trail is well maintained with only a couple of rough spots. The trailhead on the north side of Kokomo has porta-johns. Beyond that you might be looking for gas stations or restaurants to find a bathroom. There's a gas station in Peru with a sign on the trail inviting trail users to stop for snacks and a bathroom break. I found the route through Peru to be easy to follow. There are bike route marks painted on the road. The roads in Peru were very light traffic and felt safe except for the brief time on Broadway. I rode on the sidewalk on Broadway. The route on 7th St is a wide residential street with light traffic. The fall color was great and traffic both on the trail and crossroads was very light on a weekday. Riding on the trail with leaves on a nice fall day is wonderful. Fantastic trail - could use more services like access to bathrooms and water - plan ahead.

You don't likely think about the Sweetser Switch Trail. You should. This is a delightful trail, a connector to the nearby Cardinal Greenway that runs the full-length of the small town of Sweetser, Indiana. The trail is a three-mile long rail-trail. This means it runs along a railway for pretty much its entire length. It's fully paved and a mostly gentle trail. As a wheelchair user myself, I can fully attest to its accessibility. There's ample parking at nearly every crossing road and, trust me, Sweetser loves its little but memorable trail. The trail allows for biking, walking, running, use by wheelchairs, roller blading, and horseback riding. Sweetser is located in Grant County - so, it's definitely worth of a day trip with a stop in Sweetser then possibly five more miles over to Marion. This trail is part of the American Discovery Trail and despite being only three miles in length you'll see two covered bridges (over Pipe Creek) and you'll even see some train equipment. You'll even see a statue of Garfield commemorating Hoosier and Garfield creator Jim Davis who grew up nearby. Grant County has about 13.5 miles of paved trail these days. Thus, you could easily give yourself a decent half-marathon run and stay in Grant County. Just east of downtown Sweetser the trail is even lit so that you could do an evening run. During the better weather seasons, you'll definitely see bird boxes, picnic shelters, and an old-fashioned water pump. Quite honestly, this is a beautiful little trail that is well maintained. Since it really stays within Sweetser, there's a pretty good chance you're going to actually encounter people along the route. As a couple of fun facts, the first mile of the trail was funded entirely by donations AND the entire trail was developed from start-to-finish in one year. For trails, that's pretty amazing. You can even take your dogs to nearby Pawadise Park - Grant County's first dog park. Whenever I'm wheeling in this part of the state, I make it a point to add the Sweetser Switch Trail to my route because it makes for a few miles of beautiful wheeling and practically guarantees I'll run into some friendly people along the way. I give it a wholehearted thumbs up.
