We worked solely through phone and email, which was very helpful since I don't live in the Bay Area. Acme Memorial is a smaller monument company in Colma. Because they are smaller they can offer very competitive prices. Their workers are easy to work with and they are very knowledgeable about how to create a work of art. I think a lot of the monument companies around the area count on you are not going to shop around for a good price because of the death in the family. Luckily I went around to all of shops in the area PLUS a few in Hayward to get quotes. Before my dad past, he pointed out a monument style that he liked which was a very large headstone with curbing around and with large covers. I drew up a design and went to get quotes. I got quotes from American Monumental, Kollman and Sutter, Art in Stone, Golden Hills, and Acme Memorial. Acme Memorial had the best price and Grace, the owner was very nice and very willing to work with our budget. Some of the other companies wanted a few thousand more for the same design. Acme Memorial, the company, has been around for awhile (the website says 1964) but the current owners took over a few years ago so they didn't seem THAT knowledgeable about the business. However, their employees like Thomas, the lead on the actual construction, and John, the design person, are great to work with. I had a very specific design that I worked with John on, and he made it up on the computer perfectly. I wanted to be apart of process so I made a good few visits to watch the process. The pieces of granite had to be ordered from India and when it arrived Acme sandblasted it and installed it. They lost a star because the stone took way longer than expected. We finalized our order in February and Grace said that the it will be ready in July. The stone didn't arrive until September. Grace explained that apparently when ordering stone from India they are always late. I know that she did her best to try to get the stone there on time but it was out of her hands at that point. All in all, they may not have the most experience but they have the best prices. Even with such a huge custom monument, after working closely with them, they did a beautiful job on my dad's monument. Unbelievable experience. I found myself in the position of being the family member elected to find and purchase a monument for our loved family member. I was helped by a young man and a coworker from their workshop who also does sales. He answered all my questions and educated me as to the process. The quality of their work was quite high I noticed that the even did memorials in Russian, Chinese, and Jewish. I was impressed, however I still wanted to visit other shops, which I told them. They actually told me where the other shops were in the surrounding areas. They gave me some price quotes and were quite polite and professional . I then went about checking with other shops. I was astounded by the incredible price and quality differences. Every other shop was far higher in price and in 2 of the occassions the price was nearly doubled. I must state, one of the shops of which I shall only state was on located on El Camino Real was not only overpriced but the salesperson was quite beguiling and a bit overbearing. The 3rd shop was also higher in price added to which the quality was mediocre. I eventually returned to Acme and ordered a memorial from them. I mentioned the other places and my misgivings, they mentioned that they had heard the same concerns from customers for years. I was impressed that they responed so diplomaticlly. It was a pleasure to work with Grace and her staff. She is easy to work with and reasonable. She made the process simple. She also must be a nice boss because her staff seems to care about her, one of her staff even reminding her to wear her jacket because it was raining. Once the stone was complete, we decided to add a few changes to the stone and she was very accommodating. Rubio, who blasts the stone, brought us into his office to show us exactly what the additional designs would look like on the stone. The stone was delivered and is perfect. We could not be happier. Grace is efficient and professional. She is knowledgeable with engraving Chinese characters on the existing tombstone. She knows Chinese characters even though she is Korean and I am very impressed. Upon our visit to the Italian cemetery my husband and I became aware that one of our family members name had never been engraved on the headstone. We contacted Acme Memorial to get a quote and Paul was super helpful, professional and the price was very reasonable. They explained the entire process and after we made payment and signed the contract they had it done in a VERY timely manner - weeks sooner than expected. They took a photo of the etching of the name and year or birth and death of our loved one once completed to send to us. We could NOT BE HAPPIER!! It looks like it's been there all along, since she passed away in 1963! We can't wait to go see in person because I am sure it looks better than the photo. Paul, thank you for helping us to honor our family member by what my husband and I had in our hearts to do, which was to add her name, along with her husband and son who passed away. The finished job came out ok (finally) but be careful and specify exactly what you want, and check out the finished job carefully. We had a headstone done and there was a really big mistake made on it. If I had just taken their word for it and planned an unveiling with the whole ceremony, it would have been a tragic fiasco. Luckily we caught the error and they fixed it but it took another few weeks. Our job took probably 2-1/2 months to complete, and it was only one small headstone. On the positive side, the final finished product came out really well and I was very satisfied with the price. I'd say get comp pricing and give them a try if they are competitive but be careful. read more

Oh no I am so sorry. I am glad I looked on Yelp first. I called this company to inquire about a headstone for my son's grave marker. The person that answered the phone was horrible. She did not speak English; she did not even understand my question. I asked if the grave markers came with a vase She said we have different base. I said no a vase that you put flowers in. After explaining what I wanted she was not clear and finally said can I have someone call you back. NO! If you cannot get the questions correct, how can you place an order or even answer a question, how can I expect the grave marker to be correct? Sorry you lost my business. read more

I agree with previous reviewers that Acme does come up with more competitive pricing. However, they took a longer time than others to set up the monument. When we ordered the stone from Acme during early May, were told that it would be ready in 6 ~ 8 weeks time. After 8 weeks, the stone is still not set up. We visited the grave weekly and saw that other monuments (for later burials) had already been completed but our stone is still not ready. We dropped by Acme after 8 weeks and after some searching around the warehouse, Grace told that she couldn't find our stone but it had arrived and it would be installed within the next week. The following week, we saw that the monument was not set up. We dropped by Acme again and this time, we were told that they ran out of our stone and need to reorder the stone. The new shipment of our stone would take at least another 2 weeks. I was like what happened to the stone being here last week. 2 weeks later, the stone was still not set up. This time, Grace told us that the shipment is delayed in India and she cannot control the shipment. She promised us that it would arrive and be completed in another 3 weeks. 3 weeks later, by Thursday, we had not heard from Grace and decided to check in again. This time, she told us that the stone is here and she will get it installed on Friday. Finally, the monument was completed and installed by Aug. The finished job came out ok. When we went to paid the final balance, we complained about the delay. Grace blamed it on the cemetery for not setting up the foundation - which is NOT TRUE. The foundation was set up since mid-June. When we pointed that out to her, she blamed it on us. She said we had not specified a completion date. Well, she told us 6 ~ 8 weeks for completion, I was expecting a 6 ~ 8 weeks completion. Then when we told her that and tried to get a better explanation, she just shrugged, looked away and played with her fingers. NO KIDDING - she literally looked down at her fingers and started admiring and playing with them. Frustrated, we pay the balance and left. I probably won't go back to Acme. It's slightly cheaper but they are much slower compared to other shops. If you are in no hurry to get things done, you can consider Acme. But you should request a completion date to be indicated on your bill. Make sure you check the "draft" and we did spotted a few mistakes. Lastly, called at every other week to check on the status. The draft was only sent to us when we called two week after paying the deposit. We suspect that the stone was only ordered when we dropped by the shop to check. And the installation was only done after we called to check the day before. For a small headstone, it took them close to 3.5months to complete. read more

All in all, I was satisfied with my experience with Acme Memorial. I designed tombstone myself and it had some non-traditional elements and lettering. I visited the place multiple times to see how work is progressing and actively worked on the template to be applied to the stone. Mr. Thomas and Rubio were very patient with my requests and corrections. I would recommend the same practice for other customers - to play active role in template creation and proofread and check each element for correctness prior to the stone-cutting phase of the work - to avoid mistakes that are hard to fix. The stone turned out to be great, especially the the hard-to-do small cut-outs for the design elements I envisioned. Their prices are also reasonable.
