All my favorite UK-based chocolate brands but MAKE IT EASTER! Cadbury Dairy Milk, Smarties, Maltesers, Terry's Chocolate Orange, Galaxy!

Listen...I'm a UK candy FREAK, so when I found out Ackroyd's, this unique and adorable Scottish bakery not too far from where I live (~40 minutes) carried imported UK candy, I knew I had to visit! 40 minutes to me for some of my favorite (and only) candy I eat is really nothing when compared to the alternative of like swimming across the whole ocean to get some! Their storefront is currently closed, so definitely place an order for curbside pickup ahead of time. Their website is so user friendly and I saw so many delicious things on there other than the candy I picked out! Of course, I will definitely be back soon because all the Easter candies I picked up will be gone in the blink of an eye and I will need to stock up on more UK based chocolate, in addition to ordering some of their meat pies and sausage rolls and so many more delicious options I saw that are available!

This is now how Ackroyd's sells butter tarts. About the size of two tarts. For $10.

Ackroyd's is different, much different, and not for the better. I had stopped by a few times, and it was never open because covid. But I'm jonesing for a butter tart, so I order online for curbside pickup. I ordered scones, a butter tart "tray bake" and a lemon "tray bake." This was the closest thing I could come to my beloved butter tarts and lemon tarts. First, everything is frozen upon curbside pickup. I understand why this would be useful for shipping across the country, but not particularly helpful when you're a local and JUST want to get your eat on. Had I known everything would be frozen I wouldn't have ordered. Second, these "tray bakes" are seriously small for the money. Perhaps the equivalent of two tarts or so for about $10. Third, these are not good substitutes for my beloved tarts. They are vaguely "butter tart filling covered shortbread" and "lemon tart filling covered shortbread." A half inch of shortbread with a bit of topping on it is not a tart, damnit. Thanks for the memories, Ackroyd's.

An assorted box of treats. An order like this is no longer possible under their current ordering system.

Pure nostalgia for me. This place churns out delicious old school Scottish foods and baked goods. This is about as authentic food as you'll find of it's kind, outside of Scotland. I've enjoyed their fare for many years. My advice? If you haven't tried haggis because someone told you it isn't good, let go of that notion! Try it here. However, I do have some complaints as well. Like many things in this world, one is often forced to deal with the bad in order to enjoy the good. There is nothing I looked forward to more than stopping into Ackroyd's shop for an assorted box of Scottish treats and groceries and having a friendly chat with the staff. However, Ackroyd's current management has chosen to close their charming and accessible brick and mortar storefront and gone to a primarily online ordering system. You can still get curbside pickup (as of this writing) but there are many stipulations and compromises involved in system. I find the experience impersonal and rather unsatisfying. Gone is the possibility to just stop in and "see what's good" and there are minimum quantities of items required. No more ala carte. Most of all, their customer service is just a bit snarky and defensive these days. I'm sure, if they respond at all to this review, it'll likely have that tone to it. Overall, you gotta take the good with the bad here, as there aren't many alternatives for this type of food, especially locally. I'll still order here occasionally, but I miss the old Ackroyd's!

    Lots of UK groceries

This is the most amazing little bakery. It seems very hard to find any shops in the metro Detroit area specializing in British goods. Ackroyd's not only makes delicious pastries, but they also carry lots of imported groceries despite their small size. You can find English crisps, sodas, jams, chocolates, and loads more in this little shop. But let's get back to those pastries, shall we? Many know Ackroyd's for their shortbread - it's sold in markets around town, but their tea cakes are extra special. I'm going to cut to the chase and tell you that you must try the lemon tart - it's amazing! Very few lemon pastries in my experience taste more lemon-y than sugar-y, but this one does and it's perfection. My parents are also big fans of the butter tarts. But you might as well get an assortment of a half dozen tarts/tea cakes, because it's buy 5 get 1 free. As to the shortbread, every flavor I've had has been great, but my favorite so far is the gingerbread - only available for the holidays. The gingerbread flavor is subtle but delicious. Ackroyd's is a special treasure and I really appreciate what they offer because they do it so well.

If there's something strange in the neighbourhood Who's it named after? DAN AYKROYD! If there's something weird And it looks real good Who's selling it? DAN AYKROYD! I ain't afraid of no Dan I ain't afraid of no Dan Me and Dan Akroyd were driving around the Detroit burbs trying to recreate The Blues Brothers, and we kept Trading Places, driver's seat and passenger's seat, and we were trying to exorcise our Detroit Demons (you could call us Ghostbusters), but we were encountering Nothing But Trouble from a bunch of local Coneheads. So there we were, enjoying The Great Outdoors, which is pretty unusual for a couple of Spies Like Us, when I saw My Girl on her fave street corner. She hopped in the back with her client (Tommy Boy), and we were able to get her away from the police Dragnet that they'd set up looking for her. She was acting a little ditzy, so it was like Driving Miss Daisy. Our conversations felt more wooden than most of the movie Pearl Harbor, which was not in 1941 by the way. So that was the story of the 49th of our 50 First Dates. She still doesn't know My Stepmother Is An Alien, and Dan and I have officially changed our names to Chuck And Larry, according to the priest that just said I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry. And after all that, we arrived at this Scottish Bakery, and they were so excited that Dan Akroyd walked in, that they renamed the bakery after him. Except that they spelled it wrong. True story. One of my favorite places in Olive Detroit - actually I meant All Of Detroit, but I think voice dictation likes Olives a lot - although the prices are definitely on the unreasonably high side for all of their imported goods. But they have to try and stay in business somehow and if people are willing to pay those prices then I guess it's fair enough. I personally was willing to pay those prices because I missed these types of goods so much. Having said that, if everything was cheaper I probably would have spent twice as much. I think the best thing they have are the Fox's Glacier Mints which you really can't find anywhere else. They're absolutely amazing. They also have a large range of candy bars and sodas directly from the UK. It gets a little hazy when I get into the bakery items because I didn't adore their shortbread or their sausage rolls - but I would like to try them fresh or at least heated up next time. And of course, the young girl's service was really nice as well. What an excellent store. So, high prices, but miraculous and unusual range of imported British Isles goods that rock my world and add a lot to the wonderful range of amazingness available in the remarkable Detroit area. And like Lyla said, Dan is Dr. Detroit, so it makes sense that we'd do more Aykroyd stuff now. And remember If Fox's Glacier Mints are running through your head Who you gonna call? DAN AYKROYD! An invisible man With Scottish Shortbread Who you gonna call? DAN AYKROYD! And if you see Dan, his kilt up over his head Who is to blame? DAN AYKROYD! I ain't afraid of no Dan I ain't afraid of no Dan

My son requested a full English breakfast for his birthday, and as the family's designated meat-maker, I volunteered to handle the bangers, bacon, and--yep--blood sausage :p Since 2 out of 3 of those aren't widely available, I tracked down a local option--Ackroyd's! I was really looking forward to the kind of Bangers that my local (now defunct) Irish pub used to offer: finely ground interior with absolutely no grisly fat nodules. ...I was really not looking forward to blood sausage. Unfortunately, the bangers were not as hoped: not only grisly, but also very gamey. According to their website, these are beef, but it didn't taste like it to me. Better was the black pudding, or blood sausage, which I suspected would be nasty. (Let's face it, the names don't help.). With this, you taste more of the oat filler in that it's not going to be juicy (nor ooze blood). In short, I wouldn't return for the meats, adding that for the hefty price tag they did not meet (meat) expectations. (Sorry: a lot of parentheses in this review ;)

A friend recommended Ackroyd's for a get-together. The bakery is closer than expected, on Beech-Daly and 5 Mile. Because it has a relatively small footprint, the bakery was packed with people and treats on a recent Friday midday. The line stretched to the door as customers carefully considered the baked goods in the small case before making their final selections. They selected hand pies, pasties, scones, and other treats. I had called in my order a few days earlier and requested that they heat up the order - less work for me, yay! That did not stop me from picking up extra goodies while waiting for my turn. I considered jams, biscuits, and chocolate bars that I enjoyed when I was a kid. I feel that I displayed remarkable self-control given that I did not walk away with one of everything. When it was my turn, I was impressed by the customer service I received, specifically the high standards of quality the team holds themselves to. It is no wonder that they have such fans and a seemingly robust online business; I caught sight of racks upon racks of baked goods in the back. Incidentally, their e-commerce site is impressive. We enjoyed spicy sausage rolls in flaky pastry, fragrant curry chicken pies, and countless desserts. I have to say that the butter tart was a favorite - it had golden raisins! I also sampled a blackcurrant lemon tart, a fern cake with strawberry filling, and some incredible shortbread. My friend let me know that these were staples during holidays and get-togethers so I am glad that I can add this bakery as a place for celebrations.

Ask the Community - Ackroyd's Scottish Bakery

Is this open for dine in? Will they make and serve you a fry? Or do you have to buy it to go and heat it for yourself?

Nope. You have to order online, pick it up frozen, and cook it yourself.

Possibly new owners. I entered and was not greeted. I normally pick up a caramel cookie and latte…read more I noticed oddly there were two types of packaging for the cookies and some did not have labels. I asked for assistance since everything was mixed in, this is NOT normal. The lady said everything is label, which I let her know it wasn't and was mixed in. She handed me which possibly was a snickers cookie, it seemed old and hard. I placed that one back and grabbed a softer one. I ordered a caramel macchiato, small. She started making the drink and said she was out of caramel, did I want another flavor? I said sure just do pistachio. The original drink was listed at $4 and the larger $4.50. She rung the drink up as $6. I waited thinking she was going to adjust it, then she asked cash or card? I mentioned the price error. She scoffed that she had to made modifications because they were out of caramel. I told her NOTHING on the menu was $6 and it was a replacement syrup. It was ok, I'll just get the cookie. In a very combative tone she asked, what am I supposed to do with this drink? I shared how I was unfamiliar with their policies. She went on and on about how she made the drink and in her exact words, "I can't explain why it is $6, it just is." At that point I told her I would not be purchasing anything and left. This is a place I enjoyed going to, I wouldn't be surprised if they close soon due to poor service and quality.
