Second time I tried crumbed thinking it may crisp better but it was the same result, soggy in the middle section of crumbs like it had been sitting in oil, that wasn't hot enough. Now I can't work out how this happens. The oil should be hot enough to crisp the batter or crumbs but obviously is not. The owner needs to look at this.

Please note, this review is a bit strange. But it involves one of the BEST FISH & CHIP shops in…read moreSydney. It is right behind Doyles at Watson's Bay, which is a big call. There is a story behind it though and it goes like this. Oceanmaster used to be a chain and they seemed to all follow a formula when making fish and chips. And it was a truly excellente formula. I used to go the one at Surry Hills shopping centre and even one in Canberra if I happened to be there (!) But both of them are long gone. The only one in existence is in Ashbury, in the middle of suburbia - so its no longer a chain. Prior to me Googling Oceanmaster in my attempts to desperately find my fave fish and chip shop, I had no idea where Ashbury is. I will give you a prize if you knew where it was - let me know lol. Its somewhere between Croydon Park and Hurlstone Park in inner western Sydney. And its also on a relatively quiet road, but standalone. Its literally your local fish and chip corner shop. But it is sooo good!! I used to drive deliberately out of my way to come here but it seems I'm on my own there. If anyone else in Sydney knows what Oceanmaster is and has tried it, please back me up!

With a catchy, fish-related name, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Wholly Mackeral's only…read moreproduce comes from the sea. While all things fish are definitely at the forefront of the company's business model, the seafood store also offers what we've come to expect from businesses of this nature - bacon and eggs rolls, coffee and sometimes even salad! But as the name suggests, fish is the business! And what a range of fish - just as easily as getting into the delicious fish 'n' chips for a quick Friday night meal, one might also buy filets of Atlantic Salmon for a Sunday lunch, or Sydney Rock Oysters to enjoy with a celebratory glass of champagne; it's all there. And it's fresh! So fresh, so tasty... As with all seafood suppliers, the supply and demand of the industry and seasons dictates the price and availability of certain fish, but Wholly Mackeral is certainly not unreasonably priced. It's also got character - the owner is a familiar figure around Glenrose Shopping Centre, normally spotted with a big grin on his face. His staff are also usually familiar to those in the area, given the penchant of local boys and girls aged 14 - 18 to get a job at the fish shop. Normally quite prompt, you could be in for a wait at about 6pm on weekend nights when nobody can be bothered to cook, but it's pretty quick as a rule.

And some people say it's a long wait for food but it's not I usually can order a full fish and chips and get it inside 5 minutes. And even if it's a slight weight it's so worth it, the fish is amazing, the chips are perfect and the burgers are none the less great. The service here is great the prices are a little pricey for some people but usually they bump you up to a bigger burger or more chips. They always thank you, and are Generally nice. It's set up in a great area and the boys at my soccer club are always up there early tucking in on the mega great chips. This place is a 5 star and doesn't get much better when you wan't a quick fish+Chips.
