Funky hole in the wall old school looking barbershop downtown. Great music, and rotating art on the wall of various sorts (when I was there, it was fabric art in the form of T-shirts etc). Gabe gave an awesome cut and we walked through several scenarios and options as far as beard trim, cut length, etc etc. This was my 1st visit and certainly will be back. Yes, you have to park on the street and in theory it's pay parking. Not sure why ABQ makes people pay for parking downtown given I think they'd be better off NOT charging money and encouraging folks downtown for business. The funky downtown neighborhood barber shop that's filled with character and style is something I didn't realize I'd longed for so many years after the NYC shop at St. Marks Place. But returning to shorter hair after years of salons I've visited several in Albuquerque. Ace in downtown is the one I keep returning to. The music is on vinyl and always good, from blues to hip hop, to whatever. There's always good and interesting art on the walls, and the barbers - I've seen both David and Gabe over the last few years, are not only professionals, but have "character" - whether it's stories of NYC an age ago or making sound gear, or pens, I've always enjoyed the conversation. I have been coming to ACE for years. I always see Gabe. It is probably best if you make an appointment if you are on a time crunch but they are pretty quick and take walk-ins. I love the old school atmosphere and they always have cool art to look at. They offer sodas, tea and water while you wait. I have always been treated with utmost respect and the staff is friendly. As for the comments about $20 haircuts...I have paid anywhere from $10-$120 for a haircut at various salons. $20 is a killer deal and the guys here are amazing! In my opinion, if you cannot afford to tip, learn to cut your own hair or find a place within your budget. I work a commission based job so maybe I have more respect for what these people do. ***UPDATE*** The owner was very accommodating when I walked into his busy shop; he sent me to Carlo right away. Carlo did an outstanding job cutting my hair. I definitely plan on returning again and recommend ACE #APLUS I do not mind paying $20.00 for a cut; charging me an extra $5.00 for a quick wash without mentioning the cost was suspect. Ace is the coolest, most hip, and most welcoming barber shop in town. Their motto is "All Styles Welcome" and they mean it. You see everyone getting their hair cut there: kids, men, women, seniors, and more. I'm sure they'd even cut your dog's hair if you asked. All of the barbers are friendly and great at cutting any style of hair. They offer free sodas from an old school soda pop machine. There is always great music playing: classics, soul, and new mixes since Gabe (the owner) is a DJ. Every month they feature a new artist and display their art on the walls accompanied by an art show. They're really into skate and art culture so if you're into that you'll love it and if you're not then it doesn't matter because you still feel welcomed. I really wanted to give these guys a chance, but they have failed time and again. Although, the greeting from these folks is awesome, including offering free soda and drinks. The customers service stops there. There is always a significant wait and their estimates of how long the wait will is grossly underestimated. But the final straw (and the reason for this review) is their lack of respect for your time coupled with deplorable lack of communication. Because of the long wait (as mentioned above), I called and made an appointment. I arrived early for my appointment only to find the barber who took the appointment left work early because of an illness. First mistake, you didn't call me to let me know that my appointment had been canceled. Second mistake, although there was 2 barbers on duty, no one offered to keep my appointment. Third mistake, you never bothered to call me to apologize for not keeping my appointment. read more

Conor gave me a good haircut there once, but then couldn't replicate it the second time. One of the barbers furthest from the door gave me one of the worst haircuts I've ever gotten. The worst experience I had at this shop was with Gabe, the manager. He seems quite popular there, and so I think this has led to him taking on the attitude of a diva. I had scheduled an appointment for 11 Am with him. I came in at 11 and there was someone in his chair. He told me to sit down and that he'd be right with me. After five minutes of waiting, I was getting a little impatient so I asked him if he had remembered our appointment. At this point he seemed to get upset and said in an irritated voice that if I was in a rush I should just go see Conor. I said I had time. About ten minutes later he was done with his previous client, making him about fifteen minutes late for our appointment. Without any apology he tells me to sit in his chair. He then says "how do you want your wig cut". When I say what I usually say to barbers and usually works it that I want it cut with a 1 blade on the sides and spiked in the front, he starts going on a long rant about how that description is insufficient. Every word I say in response he starts dissecting the insufficiency of. In a nasty tone he says "the front of you hair is really short so we don't have much to work with anyways". Clearly he is upset about my comment about the appointment and in a childish way is expressing it passive-agresssively by giving me a hard time and insulting me. The verdict is still out here as I'd have to get a few more cuts before giving a "go" or "no" to this place. The shop itself is full of some pretty hideous art and feels a bit dingy, but this alone is far from a deal-breaker. What has me on the fence is the cut I got from an experienced barber there (experience meaning dude had been cutting for some nine years or something). I asked for a Caesar cut and got some puzzled looks and hesitance, all of which immediately made me nervous. The cut eventually worked itself out, though it was far from perfect and the barber took no initiative to take command and hook me up proper (something a good barber should do instinctively). Then, when it came to the shape up, the barber slightly messed up one side, saw that I'd noticed and then tried to play it off by suggesting he just followed what I or someone else had done previously. Not cool to mess up and even worse that he tried to blame me. Anyways, the other barber and apparent owner seems to be pretty on point, but it'd be hard for me to go back and ask for this guy rather than the guy that cut me. I guess it makes more sense just to find a new shop. The cut cost $15, so no complaint there (and I suppose one can say you get what you pay for). read more

Tommy made me feel comfortable in the chair asking what u was going for since I was new there and looking for a new buzz myself. Started long and worked out way to exactly where I wanted to be. Razored my ear lines and sideburns with hot (warmish) lather and straight razor. I felt at home by not having to act like a gentleman and language is free here 'murica at its finest. I've been in the search for a good barber in Albuquerque. Place is located right in downtown. They have about 4 chairs. Place is a little small but it makes it more personal. They accept appointments or walk ins. If you choose to walk in you place your name on a chalk board and the next available barber gets you. I really enjoyed the vibe they had there, chill music playing through the loud speakers. If you are artist you can contact the owner and get your art placed on the malls for one month. Phil cut my hair and he did a good job, I told him what I wanted and he did that exactly. The only reason why I am giving it a 3 star rating is because of parking. But check them out for yourself. I recently moved to town and stopped in for a haircut and a razor shave. This was a cool hip place. They even have an old fashioned bottle soda machine that still works and you get a free bottle with every haircut. I have to say I think it was the best haircut I have ever gotten. I've been here twice before and service was pretty on point. Was charged $15 for a fade one time but then the second time, I was charged for a full haircut ($20). Not sure why but my barber was cool so I paid it and went on my way. However, today I stopped in to see if they were available for a walk-in which they said they could take care of me right then; I thought awesome because I need a clean up. I told them I'd be back in 10 minutes and asked if that was alright, they said yes. I was back in 10 minutes and was told I couldn't be helped because someone was on their way in. Not sure how that happened since there was no mention of an appointment before... I was told I could make an appointment for a later date or try to stop by later as there are no same-day appointments but they weren't sure how busy they'd be. Terrible! I walked in and the spot is cool, there were two guys cutting hair that were really nice and friendly. One I them told me that another guys was out to lunch but would be back soon. I just needed a haircut and I work downtown so it was very close and convenient. They are not so busy that there is a huge wait. The barbers are very nice and do a really good job. The only downfall I would say is you pay for the convenience because it was 20 bucks for just a regular haircut. Am I old fashioned or what? I usually will pay 20 bucks on a 15 dollar haircut with a 5 dollar tip but when it's base price is 20 I don't think I can tip an extra 5 bucks. I had never been here before, but my hair was too long, past my nose and it was buggin' me! It was less formal than I'm used to. I wind up at Supercuts or Swag on Central. It wasn't froo froo, it was a small shop but the guy who cut my hair was courteous, polite and suggested other things to make the cut look better. He took his time and also offered to trim any wayward eyebrow hairs and shave the nape with a straight razor and warm shaving cream. It was affordable at $15. Wish i had gotten the guy's name.
