She was polite, professional, and welcoming. I didn't exactly know what kind of cut I wanted and left it to her to decide. I usually don't review barber shops, but since I got one of the cleanest fades, I decided too. If you're looking for a new place to get a cut, and don't want to risk your image. Come to The Barber's Shop, they're friendly and easy going, but the fade is what counts. Gabe worked on me on my visit, and I felt confident because of the standard he lives up to to provide the best quality cut. This was my first visit and an unexpected on. I was getting ready for work and shaving my head in my hotel. Then the unthinkable happens, my clippers busted. Oh no! What do I do now? I know...I Yelp a barber shop. So, Yelp brought me here, not because of the review ratings, because they were close to my hotel. The rest, they say, is history. Upon walking in, I was greeted by the owner, Gabe "The Barber". He first asked if I had an appointment because they were booked for the day. My first thought...isn't this just a barbershop? Aren't barbershops simply a walk in, get your cut, and then you're done? Well, The Barber's Shop is not your typical barbershop. The Barber's Shop is in high demand and after this visit I could see why. I didn't have an appointment, but Gabe took care of me any way. I could tell just by the previous customer's cut, that they cut some of the best fades. I should know. I use to get a fade when I had hair and only knew of a few places that can cut a tight fade with zero lines. The Barber's Shop is one of them. They have since become really popular after they were featured in Men's Health. Gabe is a true professional, kept the convo going, and even gave me a discount since I already did half the work. By the way, my cut was clean and tight. I had a great experience at The Barber's Shop. Yes...I will be back. PS: I concur. The Barber's Shop is one of the manliest barbershops I've been to. Found this spot on the road and was expecting a lot considering it was in Men's Health for manliest barber shops. I wasn't disappointed but didn't meet the hype. For one, I drove by and the website on the sign doesn't even exist! I digress... I made an appointment for 9 am, however no one showed up till 9:07! Not a deal breaker but don't take appointments for 9 if you're not ready till 9:15 or 9:30, or just be punctual. This is common, unfortunately, in the barber shop culture. I often make my appointments as early as possible and have experienced this many times. Melinda, took care of me and she was very cordial. I was surprised that "one of the manliest shops" had no males working but that's men's health's issue, not theirs. I'm almost positive she didn't even know I made an appt but didn't confront the issue. Melinda gave me quality cut, took her time, faded and tapered ok. It's not the best haircut but I've certainly had much worse. I would go back here if I was back in town The barbers shop did distinguish themselves by providing a hair wash post cut. They also take credit card and had a very updated POS system on the iPad. It's 2014, people don't carry cash! I know, I know, they want cash cause it's under the table, but don't tell me it's about 2% on $20!!! read more

I had an appointment in the middle of the day in the middle of the week. Still CALLED them 10 minutes before the appointment to see if there was wait or they were behind schedule. Nope. I was told "there is no wait". I got there on time. There was only one guy on duty. He was cutting someone's hair told me he will get back to me shortly. I waited 20 minutes. Then I realized the guy had a long way to go. He must have just started couple minutes before my appointment. I walked out. Apparently appointments don't mean anything at this place. About six months ago, when I was just getting to know Albuquerque again, I embarked on a mission to find a good, reliable barber. I've written of the follies I've suffered here in Albuquerque in the past, so I won't rehash that here, but, long story short, I find many barbers to be inept. Coming here for the first time, I walked in without a reservation and had to wait around about half an hour. I sat in the chair of a barber named Ox, who also happens to be a MMA fighter, and he was a cool guy. I asked him to just redo the faux-hawk I was rocking at the time and give me a proper shape up of the neck, forehead and beard, as well as a proper fade. Overall, Ox did a pretty good job, especially in tending to my beard, shaping it up accurately and then taking a straight razor to my skin so I wasn't left with stubble (like another ABQ barber had done to me). I was pleased until I got home and realized that my fade was uneven. Fortunately, to the untrained eye, this is hardly noticeable, so I shrugged it off. Still, for $20 I was hoping for better. I was really intent on going back to this place---and tried on several occasions---but this is where The Barber's Shop lost a customer. I passed by several times afterwork only to find the place closed (we're talking 5-6 PM) and even texted Ox to try to make an appointment (he'd given me his number for this very purpose) and I never got a response. I certainly could have kept trying or gone by a different time or day or whatever, but in the end, I don't want to have to bend over backwards to get a cut. I eventually went elsewhere and found a place that is open when I need it to be and gets the shave AND the fade AND the shape-up right. At day's end, this place isn't bad, but it didn't work out for me. read more

I can't say that I actually had my hair cut at this establishment. However, I find it laughable that it's considered one of the "Manliest Barbershops in America." I made an appointment, walked in early, there were two women cutting hair, no men employees. They were pretty cold, they asked if I had an appointment and went on with their business. In the shop there was one female customer getting her hair colored, and a man getting his hair cut. It didn't seem manly at all for the all women staff, the unfriendly welcome, lack of a fridge with beer/sodas, and female clientele. Only thing that seemed manly was the tool chests they used for barber supplies. Besides, the laughable title of a manly barbershop I walked out after seeing their pricing. The menu says "starting at $20 for a haircut with clippers," and "starting at $35 a haircut with scissors." I have worked in some high end salons and this place has no right to be charging that much. After walking out I went to a fantastic local barber Fonzy's Barbershop. He made fantastic conversation, had a fully stocked fridge, took me as a walk in, and only charges $10 for a haircut. To top it all off, he listened to what I wanted, and gave me one of the best haircuts I have been able to find in town. read more

This place is perfect. All the stylists are top notch and friendly. The fact that Gabe is constantly teaching them and giving them tips, shows how much he cares about them and the customers. I've been going here for 7 years or so and have no desire to go anywhere else. I've been stopped by other barber's and asked who cuts my hair, saying they love it. Then they want me to go to them for a haircut. Ok, if you liked my cut, then why would I change? I even get stopped on the street and complimented, by strangers. I will never go to a Supercuts again. These guys are very thorough and have even more reasonable prices (a regular haircut should cost around $14). I'm guessing that salons charging twice as much won't do as good of a job. Definitely call ahead if you're busy though, walk-ins can take a while on a busy Saturday for instance. read more

I wish I could review this shop's barbering but since I wasn't able to actually get my hair cut there I can only speak to what my experience was with how they treat a new customer. On a Tuesday morning, I messaged them through their FB page to request an appointment since that's what their last post said to do to book an opening. When I didn't hear back from them by late afternoon, I called the shop and spoke to the woman who answered the phone. I asked if there were any openings on Thursday afternoon and was told yes. She wanted to know if I wanted to book with anyone in particular, but since I'd never been to the shop I was willing to book with anyone. I asked if 2 o'clock was open and she said yes, so I booked for 2pm on Thursday. Before hanging up I said, "I'll see you folks at 2 on Thursday," and was told "okay". I did finally get a response to my FB message on Wednesday at 1:04pm, suggesting an appointment at 3pm on Thursday. When I responded that I'd already phoned the shop & booked for 2 on that day, I got a "thumb's up" sticker response. On Thursday, I arrived at the shop and didn't see any parking other than on the street. I parked around the corner where (I think) parking is free. I walked into the shop ten minutes before my confirmed 2pm appointment. The shop is small, but clean & nicely decorated. The entrance is at one end of the long and narrow space, with a bank of windows opposite the stations. It was nicely lit and pop music was playing. There were 3 chairs, two of which were occupied by customers getting haircuts. There was a third person getting their hair shampooed. The 3 displayed licenses I noticed on the wall showed two female and one male barber. No one greeted me when I arrived, and they barely gave me a glance but since they were all with customers that didn't bother me. I didn't see anywhere to sign in like some other barbershops in Albuquerque, so I just sat down in the waiting area. A few minutes after 2pm, the male barber (I guess he was Gabe, the owner?) finished with his customer and stepped up to the front. Looking at the appointment book, he asked if I had an appointment, and I said that I did, at 2pm. He asked for my name, but didn't seem to be able to find me in their appointment book when I gave it to him. He then rattled off a phone number and asked if it was mine. It was. At that point he told me that my appointment was for 4:30! I again said that I was told on the phone two days earlier that my appointment was at 2. Rather than apologize or explain that there was a apparently a mixup, he just kept saying that my appointment was for 4:30. I told him that I couldn't do 4:30, which is why I booked for 2. He again repeated that my appointment was 4:30, said that they were booked now and asked if I wanted to reschedule. I guess he thought I was a liar? I didn't see any upside to rescheduling since I already had made one appointment and obviously there's no guarantee that they'll actually write it down correctly or honor the appointments they've previously confirmed. I just told him no thanks and left the shop. Very disappointing, especially for a shop that came so highly recommended, both by some friends locally and from online reviews. It's a pricey shop though I was comfortable with the idea of paying premium prices for good service. Unfortunately, if my experience wasn't unusual (and other Yelp reviews suggest it wasn't) the way they treat customers doesn't appear to justify a rate that's nearly twice the cost of other shops in the area. Everyone in the shop was about 15 or 20 years younger than I am, so perhaps that was the issue - they don't want any customers over fifty. Maybe I dampened the hipster vibe? read more

What can I say about a place I've been going to for years? I popped into The Barber Shop before Men's Health did their posting. My regular barber left the shop and I was a bit nervous because usually the barber does the work, not the shop. Instead, I gave one of the new gals a chance and have been going to her since. All three barbers know their craft (Melinda's been handling my melon for the past year) and I have no reason to worry about the next people Gabe may bring on in the future. The vibe is always great like a barber's shop should be with random strangers piping into each other's conversations. Granted, there can be a wait especially without an appointment but I'll sit 45 minutes knowing my cut isn't going to get rushed when I get into the chair. read more

Excellent service across the board and one of the best haircuts I've ever received. Online reservations are very easily made through Facebook and come with texted reminders and calendar reminders (if one wants) which is perfect for those who are forgetful like me. I arrived for an end-of-day cut and walked in almost half hour before before I was supposed to be there fully expecting to wait; within five minutes I was seated and getting my haircut. Whatever prior posts took issue with the timeliness of appointments and so on, I can very happily say this was not my experience -- the whole shop was running efficiently and like a well-oiled machine. Brian cut my hair and I definitely want to book with him again. He clearly knew what he was doing, listened to what I wanted, made welcome suggestions and took his time in getting it right. With clipper cuts, one can literally feel how experienced and confident a barber is through the handling of the clippers on one's head. With Brian, his complete expertise was evident within the first several minutes of climbing in his chair. He was a mighty swell guy to chat with as well! Other unexpected and very nice perks: 1.) Straight razor shaving around the ears and neck as part of the cut (I *wish* this was a standard practice, but more more and more, it seems it is disappearing from even traditional barber shops.) 2.) My hair was washed following the cut -- which I never expect at a barber shop, especially following a "basic" clipper cut. 3.) Complete blow drying and styling following the cut, including the use of a particularly good line of products that behave and smell absolutely fantastic. Also note that while these products are readily for sale, at no point during my time there did anyone attempt to push them on me for additional sale. They stood for themselves -- and here a day later, I'm thinking about going back specifically to buy what Brian used on me. All of this for an incredibly reasonable price. I don't quite understand the whole Men's Health "Manliest Barber Shop in America" rap The Barber's Shop is getting. I suppose it's reasonably butch looking place -- but this imposed label on them strikes me as a disservice and makes about as much sense as an equal and opposite listing for some other place labeled "The Girliest Salon in America." In the end, I'd hope this wouldn't matter -- and if this alone is someone's criteria for where they go to get a haircut, then that person has a few gender issues to deal with! But that all said, I'd *very* happily stand behind a vote for "Top Barbershop Experiences in America" that I've ever had -- and with the amount of traveling I do on the East Coast, West Coast and everywhere in between, that's saying something! I was referred here by a friend who heard me complaining about not being able to find a reliable barber who'll give me a decent cut, for a decent price without torturing me in their chair with nonsensical and not-so-witty banter. After two cuts with Michelle at The Barber's Shop I think I've found a comfortable place to get a really good cut at a more than reasonable price. $20+tip have gotten me two consecutive EXCELLENT cuts that left me feeling much cooler than when I showed up. Although the banter is there, it is not without wit and Michelle and the other people sharing the floor (including the other patrons) keep the atmosphere light and fun. I decided to review this place after my 3rd visit because I love this place. I've been to 20+ barber shops locally and for the longest time had my hair cut at the big franchise salons and for the most part they've been ok.... Im an easy going guy with a simple hairstyle so if it looks bad, I just wait a few weeks and start over. Biggest problem I've always ran into was consistency. My hair never looks the same as the last cut. It doesn't matter if I go to the same barber or not. But Jess at "the barber shop" is amazing.! I've been here 3 times and all 3 times I've left with a haircut that doesn't need to be trimmed or fixed when I get home. Never did I leave thinking, oh, it's too short or too long, I'll just have to get pass the "ur hair always look like crap right after you cut it" mentality. She is a very talented artist and is very good at her craft. That alone is worth the price tag of the cut and the reason why I'? willing to keep coming back. Everyone else at this shop seems very friendly and welcoming as well. They do women and men's cuts and beard grooming as well. The nice part is the appointments online which always saves the wait time. Only bad part is that they're located in the nob hill area where parking is very limited. I avoid central like the plague with all the construction going on but I always make my way back to Jess cause she's freakin awesome!!! Highly recommend. read more

This place is horrible. I came here, waited for a haircut for 30 minutes while the owner and another worker chilled out and talked. The haircut was horrible. I asked for a completely different cut and got something very wrong. My hair was plastered to my head, so short that I couldn't do anything with it for weeks. This place seems to have it's own lingo and if you don't know it, you're going to get the crappiest cut. Worst way to spend money ever. Whoever cut my hair knew that I hated it, too, and only shrugged at the end and told me that I should have notified him he was cutting too short, um HELLO, i wasn't even facing the mirror any of the time. I made an appointment, and when I walked in no one greeted me or acknowledged I was even there. I did get a dirty look from one of the hair stylist but that's about it and then I proceeded to wait 15 mins before I just walked out. During that time not one person said ANYTHING to me. Do they not know how to schedule appointments? Or acknowledge a paying customer.. I have gone to a lot of salons and I do NOT trust nor want to give my hard earned money to a shop that does not care about their clients and can't even say "hello I'll be right with you" or say something!? New to town and wanted a haircut by a local place. You have to just sit and wait once you get there and not a lot of directions are given, but the staff was extremely friendly once you got the chair. Great haircut for only $15. I was impressed by their style and overall atmosphere. I would recommend this place to anyone, just maybe not to the younger crowd as there are lots of playboy magazines on the rack...just not my style. All the complaints about late appointments make sense to me since it seemed like everyone in the place was high. I got an ok haircut but only because I kept reminding the guy of areas he had forgotten to cut. 420 is cool but don't make people wear the result of you f¥€ked-upness on their heads for the next month. Last week I was passing through Albuquerque, and en route to a firefighter interview. I always knew Albuquerque produced good barbers so I looked some up and found this shop. I called and Gabe told me to stop by the shop. Gabe was the barber who cut my hair. I really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere, and barber shop talk which consisted of music and cars in our case.
