If you want problems, this is the firm to hire. They were supposed to file our second quarter…read morepayroll reports, which they claimed they had. They even sent me a copy of the report they had supposedly filed. However, we later discovered they never actually filed it and we were threatened with a tax levy by the State. Subsequent requests for clarification and assistance went unanswered and unresolved. Lack of service and honesty (not good for an accounting firm) caused us to take our business elsewhere.

I hired Kathy Villard (under the business name Villard & Associates at the time) in 2012 to help…read morewith a bad tax situation I had created. It was such an awful experience that I looked her up *seven years later* to write this review. The reason I had gotten so behind on my taxes was that my husband had become very sick and this had created financial complications that we weren't up to dealing with in the middle of his illness. I let this go on for too long, until finally I was ready to pay an accountant just to help me out of this mess. I expected to feel tremendous relief. Instead, I ended up worse off than I started. Ms. Villard asked me intrusive questions about the nature of his illness; followed up my stunned answers with the cruel editorializing, "Oh, then he'll never get better"; and then offered me unsolicited life advice about how I may want to remarry in the future. It was a genuinely traumatic interaction. I went home and cried, and never filed the taxes I paid her $150 for preparing because I couldn't bear to look at them. Much later, I went to a different accountant who charged much less money, treated me professionally, and also found that the taxes Ms. Villard had prepared were done wrong and needed to be redone. She is awful at her job, and frankly, based on my experience, as a human being.

I would not recommend MBE based on my experience. My wife and I worked primarily with Ryan Reetz…read moreand his managing partner Kim Wegner, and the service fell well below expectations for a paid tax professional. We provided all required tax documents by March. And On 3/22/25, Ryan explicitly told us: "I believe we have everything to complete the return. We will get it finished before you leave." Despite that assurance, our taxes were not filed on time, and communication was extremely poor. After nearly three weeks of silence, we were contacted on 4/12/25 and told there was an issue with a $1,500 IRA contribution. Ryan incorrectly stated it was a Roth IRA contribution when it was, in fact, a traditional IRA rollover -- something later confirmed directly with Fidelity. Because we were already out of the country, which was relayed to Ryan, this delay pushed everything back further. We ultimately didn't receive a valid filing link until 5/6/25, and our return was accepted by the IRS on 5/8/25, well after the deadline -- despite having submitted everything early and receiving written confirmation that the return would be completed on time. The consequences have been significant. We were expecting a sizeable refund, which we were relying on. To date, the IRS is still reviewing the return, and we have received no resolution. Charging the full $895 fee under these circumstances feels unreasonable given the missed deadline, lack of communication, and basic misunderstanding of investment classifications. I'm sharing this so others can make an informed decision. If you value timely filing, clear communication, and technical accuracy, I would think twice before trusting MBE.
