I grew up across the street from Acapulco and I really wanted to enjoy the food during my last visit but I just couldn't. I hope that my very negative experience was due to the fact that they just opened because I went on 9/7 with a party of 11 and none of us except for my ten year old niece enjoyed their meal.
Some issues that my party had with their food and beverages:
One member of our party wanted a blended margarita but they told her that they did not have a blender.
The size of the margaritas was half the size of margaritas of Alameda's two other Mexican restaurants, not as strong and more expensive. We were shocked when they brought out our margaritas which were $7.50 for their basic house margarita and saw how small it was. We referred to them as "baby margaritas."
Two members of our party ordered tacos which came in pre-made/store bought taco shells which we joked were probably bought from the liquor store across the street. One of the taco orderers was a child and he only wanted chicken in his tacos but the other was an adult and she ordered two shredded beef tacos a la cart, they were brought out on two separate plates and it was literally just the shell, a bit of shredded beef and what looked to be about a tablespoon of shredded lettuce in each one, no salsa, no flavor nothing.
One member of our party ordered fish tacos which had absolutely no flavor so he scraped some of the tomatillo sauce off of another's burrito to flavor his tacos.
One member of our party ordered crunchy tacos was brought out soft tacos.
The beans. If you go here expecting the old Acapulco beans you will be sadly disappointed. They give you an option of whole beans and refried beans. The refried beans are not refried. They were very soupy in consistency and the beans were not all mashed, maybe 1/3rd of the beans were mashed. We were confused and told the waitress that we had ordered refried beans and she said that yes those were their refried beans.
The chile relleno didn't have any sauce on it. It was a dry chile relleno, no onions or sauce or anything, no pickled veggies, nothing.
The queso fundido had more burned cheese on the bottom that melted cheese on the top, only two out of our 11 were able to scrape the melted cheese on the top and then the kids fought for the slab of melted cheese on the bottom.
The calamari did not taste fresh, you could taste that it was pre-frozen.
I ordered the grilled chicken, it was very dry. My nephew also ordered the grilled chicken and his was also very dry, he asked for ketchup (he's a kid) to try to make it less dry but alas they didn't have ketchup, which they should if they are going to serve kids. This is not a bougie establishment, they should carry ketchup or go across the street to the convenience store to get it if someone asks for it.
Only half the orders of beans that came with dinner had melted cheese on them. My cheese was only half melted.
It was hot as hell on Saturday and there was no AC, also we were seated next to the bathroom and I was feeling dizzy from the Pine-sol fumes.
We just as a whole (except for my 10 year old niece who ate a burrito) were not satisfied with our food and genuinely disappointed.
La Pinata is much better than this place and their drinks are spot on. I like Otaez even less because my food is always too salty and inedible but I would still rather go to Otaez and order the few items on the menu which are OK and be happy with a good sized and strong margarita than go to Acapulco and not get good food or good drinks. Please change. I want to love you, Acapulco. I live down the street from you and I would be very happy to have a decent Mexican restaurant in my neighborhood. You have a very small and limited menu, there is no reason why the items on your very small menu shouldn't be EXCELLENT. And please, get a blender, because my partner in drinking will never go back to your establishment if you can't make her a decent blended margarita. Also, for 7.50 I can go to either La Pinata or Otaez and order one margarita and get my buzz on whereas I spent 22.50 on 3 margaritas at your restaurant and didn't even come close to getting a buzz.
I'm not "friends" with either La P or Otaez owners, so I have no ulterior motive in giving you a crappy review. If you can provide better food than they can and better drinks, I'd never set foot in those places again. I'll try again in a few months. read more
