I had a phenomenal experience at Acahti Dental today. The staff were incredibly kind and competent. They were flexible with scheduling my appointment, and they were ready to see me once I arrived. These people are criminal. A literal mouth mafia. They commit dental malpractice. They invent spurious non-existent dental problems (like needing five root canals), botch the job, and then send you an exorbitant bill. It took 2 dentists to fix their mistakes. A law firm confirmed that they could be sued for malpractice, based on my experiences, but the juice was not worth the squeeze. Pieces of shit. Read the other reviews for confirmation. read more

For my last operations (before leaving Ithaca) they initially told me my insurance is renewed and I could use its money for the last procedure. After the procedure, they told me my balance and I paid. Then 8 month later, unrelated to balance I myself called them for some of the records for my new dentist. The assistant surprised me and told me I have a balance. I asked them why they didn't send me anything before and it turned out they sent it to a wrong email (they do have my phone number but they don't bother calling you even that's literally their job). I told them there is probably a mistake because I already paid and please check with the Drs and my insurance and follow up with me. Then I did not hear back anything from them for a year and 8 month until a week ago they sent me a letter with a balance and threatened to send it to collectors. The worst part was that when I called them the assistants were totally rude, not acknowledging that they should have contacted me right after the procedure while I could talk to insurance, and I could go there in person to talk to doctors about the fact they told me it'd be covered with insurance, or at least options to pay, etc. Long story short, this place is a mess with it comes to payments, insurance, and follow ups. Make sure to double check the costs with them and asked them to check with insurance first. Also follow up with every couple months if you don't want to get surprised 2-3 years later. read more

I went to Acahti Dental on the suggestion of a colleague about 3 years ago and have had both routine cleanings and fillings. While Dr. Oberly had seemed very dedicated to high-quality dentistry and the best technology, even when I've asked for a summary of the dental procedure he's about to do, he provides very little information, and the office seems either oblivious to or careless about the financial burden of care on their patients and are not great at communication. After recently receiving insurance estimates for a procedure, I requested the cheaper procedure. When I got billed, I found that Dr. Oberly had done the more expensive procedure and the office had billed it with a different code from the one used for my estimate - and the billed code was not covered by my insurance. When I brought it to their attention they agreed to re-bill it with the correct code, and the office staff took responsibility for miscommunicating to the dentist. I also found out that the dentist does a desensitization procedure after fillings to reduce discomfort that is not covered by insurance, and I wish I'd been told about that ahead of time. I won't be going back because I'm tired of feeling in the dark about my dental care and being surprised by bills. read more

I have seen both Dr. Peterson and Dr. Oberly for about 10 years now and have had good results. Before I went to Aspen Dental, and they pretty much neglected all the problems I had with my teeth. Acahti Dental straightened out everything - literally in the case of Dr. Peterson. While I was being covered by Orthodontics, I was on vacation and had a painful infection. I called Dr. Peterson on a Friday night and she got me the antibiotics I needed from all the way across the country. That's good service! read more

Quite honestly, Dr Oberly took extremely good care of me and my teeth. No other dentist has ever explained stuff to the level that he did, including my issues, my diet and my overall dental and oral health. He was thorough and very professional and explained every detail of my treatment. I will definitely be going back to them for future appointments and highly recommend this dentist. As other person said, you may want to get a second opinion regarding expensive treatments, but that should be the case every time any type of expensive medical treatment is needed with any doctor. read more

I strongly do not recommend going here. The main dentist reviewed my broken tooth, said it wasn't broken, and sent me home. A week later it broke, and I had to go back to this office. They constantly try to reschedule my appointments and keep stating that my next appointment is my last, but obviously that is not the case since I have to keep returning to this place. When they are working on my tooth, they disguise what they are saying so I don't understand what the problem is. Overall, this office is incredibly shady and I do not recommend going here. read more

Avoid Dr. Oberly! On my second visit he told me I needed two crowns right away (estimated cost $2500). My previous doctor had told me everything was fine. I went to a different dentist and he told me everything is still fine. Dr. Oberly is very unethical. He bought two very expensive crown making mills (CEREC) and he tries to recover the cost by any means. If he suggests you need a crown (or two) get a second opinion! read more

I live around the corner on Plain street and have been using this dentist since my arrival in Ithaca in 2012. I trust in their work fully and my spouse also goes there and has had only positive experiences. We have both had cleanings and fillings done. They are happy to explain the work being done patiently and seem to genuinely care about me to the point that they ask me how my life in grad school is going. read more

Oh man, I don't even know where to begin. Dr Oberly is completely unprofessional and trash talked our president and other patients while he had me in the chair. He did a very difficult root canal himself (and had to remove the crown, reopen and try to clean it out multiple times) rather than referring me to an endodontist. He clearly has an ego problem and being right and mr important expert is more important than his patients' well being. I ended up loosing that tooth and using all my dental benefits on his poor work. I have them to thank for that lost tooth and no benefits left to get a replacement. The staff also mostly seem like abused wives living in an atmosphere of fear. My favorite receptionist disappeared one day and when I enquired they just said she wasn't in, well she never reappeared. read more

I don't know where to start. I started at Acahti Dental having confidence that I had found the dentists I was going to go to forever. Boy oh boy was I wrong. I started with all my teeth, minus the wisdom teeth. Now I have 8 teeth on the top and 9 on the bottom. There multiple root canals done, they all fell off and I had an infection in 2 of the root canals that forced me to be on antibiotics for weeks. Dr. Peterson is nice at first, then she gets to be just like her husband, Dr. Oberly. I had asked for an estimate for the work that would be done, after we spoke to him, twice. We never received one. I also had 4 crowns that were over 30 years old, he nicked one and broke it and the other one he just took off and said I would need a partial there, oh and and and and. He was talking about implants to hold onto the partial and I could never get dentures due to my gums. Your guess is as good as mine on that comment. I do agree that they provide medications for you if you have dental terror. The last thing I want to add is the rotation of staff there. Every time I went in there were new people, it was confusing to me and my son. read more

Beware! With this practice, you MUST get everything approved in advance by insurance. Why? Because they will tell you they are doing one thing, and then do something else. When I came in for my first appointment I was very impressed--they took digital pictures of my teeth, showed me the problem spots, and told me I would need a few fillings but it could all be done at my next visit, no problem. When I came back they started grinding away at my teeth, and only when two of them were mostly gone did they let me know that instead of fillings they would be putting in ceramic CROWNS. Guess what, fillings are covered by insurance. Crowns cost four times as much and are not covered. Now I'm out two thousand bucks. Don't let this happen to you. The actually dentistry was okay, they screwed up the novocaine and had to shoot me with it seven times, and I still can barely floss between the two teeth with the crowns because they made them so tight, but everything is basically intact. read more
