I spoke directly with the owner, Herman, who was an absolute delight. Following that, we met with Darlene for the family assessment; she was incredibly well-versed, answering every question and instantly building our confidence. My grandmother has been with them for over eight months now, and she truly looks and feels alive again. They truly treat her and all of us like family. Not only did they have trouble hiring for our contracted time, their workers often did not show, came late, or sat in their cars after checking in. The office often did not contact my mother if the healthcare worker was delayed or not coming. All in all we were very unhappy with their service. We have 2 children at the facility that are suffering from a terrible neurological disease. They will never recover, and Rowan Community is their home. The staff treat them as such and take care of them like they are their own. You can't put a price tag or a star rating on that. If something were to happen to my wife or myself, we know that they would be taking care of. With that said, it is an older building and has a lot of the issues that come with an older building. They unfortunately are dealing with staff shortages much like every other business these days, but they are doing the best they can. Everyone pitches in to help. It is all hands-on deck when it comes to meal service, and they do the best they can. We are very involved with the care of our kids and you will find my wife there at least 3 times a week. Unfortunately, several of the residents have been forgotten by their family members and they expect the staff to just "handle" their needs. If you are looking for a state-of-the-art facility, Rowan probably isn't that. If you are looking for people who care, Rowan is the place.

My father was brought to Rowan after a back surgery for rehab, because it was affiliated with the VA. They seemed to be highly rated but this is the biggest nightmare of a care facility I've ever experienced in my life. This is the hell you send your loved ones to when they are dying! Before I even got there, my dad was texting us non-stop to come save him. He did not get breakfast because his dinner the night before was practically inedible. He begged us to bring him outside food. Upon walking in you are immediately hit with a smell of a mixture of morgue and mold-riddled cafe. Then you see the paint, decor, and bedding is all from the 1970s and 1980s. The beds spring boards and the mattresses are foam, not memory foam, regular camping mat foam. The beds at the hospital were more comfortable. The staff seemed mostly nice, but the Director of Nursing seemed to find us audacious for saying that the beds were not adequate. Dad was complaining of pain three times more in these beds than he did at the hospital before his surgery. I asked her how old the beds were, and she answered with "They are perfectly functional! What's wrong with them?!" That's not what I asked. The more I sat with my dad, the more triggered I got by the sounds and smells. It sounds like an insane asylum. Doors being slammed every 30 seconds, equipment knocking and slamming, staff yelling at each other across the halls, patients melting down, etc. There is no AC in the individual rooms. The PT center can only handle one patient at a time, and with as many patients as they had, I'm not sure how often they could have gotten around to my dad's care. As I walked to different places in the facility I was hit with what smells like feces and rotten menstrual pads. Then I had to get on the floor because my dad dropped his hearing aid battery and the floor was sticky. There were no chairs for visitors or patients to sit on. We sat on the unoccupied bed in the room and our backs started hurting as well.

We had one caregiver for a month who moved away suddenly, and that transition was handled smoothly by Rachel and her team. We ended up working with the agency from late August 2020 through mid-March 2021, and our caregiver Linda became a member of our family. I could not recommend this agency highly enough. Throughout any billing, long term care insurance, scheduling, or other logistical challenge they handled all the difficult parts. Our caregiver Linda always followed covid protocols and was a friendly and engaging presence. Linda worked with both of my parents when they lived with us and did an amazing job juggling a complex set of care needs and personalities. I could not have been happier working with EFHC and Linda. Guess I had high hopes for a highly rated center. I asked the hospital how these ratings were made and it was unclear (no true explanation). I would not even consider this place due to: 1) awful smell of the facility; 2) feelings of it being an unsafe facility; 3) low energy/bad vibes from the facility and residents; and 4) lack of confidence of their rehab capabilities. It was the first one visited which left a really awful feeling about rehab centers, especially if this was one of the higher rated places. Thank goodness it appeared to end up being just a glitch in the ratings where however it was done for this list of places, must have been opposite of what I felt was important in the rating. Out of the 9 that were looked at, this was definitely at the bottom of our list.
