After a horrible experience with a previous hospice, I was admittedly apprehensive about starting…read moreover with another provider. From the moment I connected with Silver Lining Hospice, that apprehension began to fade. I felt supported and understood during one of the most difficult seasons of my life. My point of contact, Josh, was consistently professional, proactive, courteous, and helpful -- guiding me through each step with compassion and clarity. Ashley, the Head RN, demonstrated not only exceptional medical knowledge but also genuine warmth and empathy. She didn't just supervise the team -- she was right there alongside the CNAs, delivering hands-on care with the same dedication and heart. She always listened and answered every question with patience, offered support, prepared me for the changes ahead, and -- most importantly -- treated Vera with the utmost dignity and respect she deserved. The CNAs were equally remarkable -- caring, attentive, and loving in every interaction. They, as with Ashley, were always punctual and lit up the room with their positive, loving energy, which on many occasions prompted Vera to share a long-hidden smile of happiness and sometimes even an enthusiastic "hi!" They perform a much-needed but often thankless job, yet they do it with constant love, care, and concern. Over the course of seven months, with multiple visits each week, supportive friendships developed -- not only with me, but also with my Doberman, Cheyenne, who was coping with her own sadness and fear from Vera's illness. These bonds of friendship became deeply appreciated and even more valued upon Vera's passing. Silver Lining Hospice truly lived up to its name, becoming a source of light during a time of deep sadness. I will always be grateful for their dedication, compassion, and the peace they brought to our home. -- Johnny Burchett

I read Michelle's heart felt "masterpiece". "From the Business"...Words like "compassion", "going the extra mile", "informed", "educated" & "make sure we are always performing at our upmost best"! I find this "magnificence" hard to believe! That's because I requested home care from this company via e-mail. Michelle responded & asked me some personal questions. I answered her. That was six days ago! Michelle presents herself as an influential positive role model evidenced w/her compassion, how she went the extra mile & performed @ her upmost best!...NOT!!!...SHE GHOSTED ME!!!...I guess this is how she operates her company. (?) I've been a business owner myself. Ghosting was not something I even thought about doing to my clients. Shame on you Michelle! I'm very disappointed in you & your company...

Thank you, Porter Hospice At The Johnson Center, for loving my mom and making her feel so special and important in the last few pages of her life here on earth! Everyone has been so caring, helpful and amazing! My mom is finally at peace, knowing she is not alone, because not only does she have her family and friends, but now she also has her Porter Hospice Team, who have become her family, too! Her room had windows that actually opened, and a bird feeder with various birds and other wildlife outside kept her entertained. The room provided ample seating for visitors and there were other common areas and outdoor areas where families could gather. Most spectacularly, the entire group of staff and volunteers here is amazing. Joan gave us a tour initially, and she has been volunteering here for 18 years! Terry, the chaplain, visits all guests on a regular basis and offers support to families. Nurses including (but not limited to) Jill, Jamie, Laura, Allison, Jenny, Amy, and Margie we're so kind and caring. CNAs including (but not limited to) Mary and Shanon were outstanding. They responded to my mom's need right away and made her feel like a guest rather than a patient. Dr. Mush (Mushinski) gave us all a clear understanding of what to expect and added humor and compassion. The volunteers that monitor the front desk keep tabs on everyone coming and going. They check to make sure you're on the "approved visitors" list so no one unexpected enters the room. One day, when my dad and I arrived, the volunteer at the front desk told us Mom was getting her hair washed! The volunteer knew about my mom and cared about what was happening with her. Mom's condition actually improved while she was at this hospice facility because of the peacefulness of the place and the care from the staff. Sadly, it couldn't reverse her situation, but it gave us several great days to share memories and have heartfelt conversations. I can't express enough how wonderful this place and these people have been for our family.

Unprofessional, condescending, and first nurse incompetent-anything but compassionate…read more The one bright star was Mom's second nurse, Connor, who was knowledgeable, caring, and very willing to answer questions. He deserves 10 stars! The rest of the company -two stars may be too much. My mother-in-law was seen at the hospital and was diagnosed with gall stones. At 97, she choose not to have surgery., which is understandable. By the end of the day, the doctor had placed her on hospice and set up care with Compassus. We were not told why Mom was placed on hospice or given any opportunity to investigate options. From the first meeting, Compassus was clear that they would only provide services and supplies that Medicare paid for. My questions about Mom's secondary insurance or private pay programs were ignored. What Medicare paid for was a visit from a nurse two to three times a week and a CNA once a week. All of the rest of Mom's care was left to the family with no training and no support from Compassus. They treated us like we worked for them and answering questions was inconvenient. Mom wanted to "die in her own bed" and we honored that-which meant 24/7 intensive medical care with zero medical training. (In her final weeks she had a urinary catheter with a bag that had to be emptied multiple times a day, she had to be turned every 2 hours, have pain medication every four hours, spoon fed....) When I asked about support options, we were given the name of two local nursing homes-no options for other support, even though we did have some money that we were prepared to devote to Mom's care and comfort. Through a friend, who is a volunteer for another hospice, I learned that there are temp nursing agencies, nursing student programs and even volunteer community support resources that could have been helpful. Compassus informed me that they didn't work with outside organizations or programs. Mom's first nurse not only placed her urinary catheter incorrectly, but chewed out my husband and his brother for not changing Mom's wet diapers fast enough. If she has a urinary catheter, she should not have a wet diaper! After I filed a formal complaint, this nurse was removed and Connor brought in. He was incredible! When I was staying with Mom and caring for her one weekend, the CNA informed me that I was "Just the in-law" and she couldn't tell me if Mom had a bowel movement that morning. An irate call from my husband had me added to the list of people authorized for medical information, but should not have been necessary for a simple question that I was able to answer myself by looking through the trashcan. Apparently the reason that I was not listed was that no-one ever asked Mom or Glenn (my husband/her son0 who they wanted listed. They just copied the name of the person with power of attorney off of her medical record. The final insult came when Mom passed away last week. Compassus' grief counselor sent a sympathy card addressed only to my husband (it should have been addressed to the family) and couldn't bother to spell his first name correctly! Mom's final weeks were far less comfortable and her children/inlaw's lives were made far more difficult than they needed to be because Compassus' only focus was how much money they could get from Medicare.

I get it- you do a lot of work, but don't make promises that "we're here for you through all of it" and then not be. Absolutely the WORST agency we worked with during our loved one's death. If it weren't for the director of the funeral home we chose being an amazing person willing to answer all of our questions we would have gotten nowhere. Lesson learned and message to all: YOU DO HAVE CHOICES WHEN IT COMES TO HOSPICE CARE. Do your research, know your boundaries, don't let these agencies prey on your grief.
