In Spring of this year, my old central A/C system decided to quit working. I suspected the cause was the thermostat and I even tried to fix it myself (big mistake). As the weather became warmer, I knew that finding a professional was in order, but the idea of hiring someone I didn't know, who may or may not be honest and competent, made me drag my feet until late June. At that time, a friend recommended John, owner of Ability Air, and I was so glad he did - another week of hot weather would have been unbearable! John arrived promptly, presented himself very professionally and personably, and got right to the heart of the problem immediately. It was, indeed, the thermostat - but, not only did he change out the old one, he inspected, cleaned and tested both the attic unit and the outside unit. All of this he did for a very reasonable cost. Ironically, two days later, the A/C quit working. I gave John a call and he was able to rearrange his schedule in order to arrive at my house early the next day. Diagnosis: The compressor on my 20-year-old unit had burned out. (It was just its time to go...) Instead of John's suggesting that I have a whole new system put in for thousands of dollars, he told me that I had a really well made A/C system and that a new compressor was all that was needed. He phoned around to get the best price for me and drove all the way to south county to pick up the compressor. He installed it that afternoon and I was fascinated by the equipment, welding expertise and scientific know-how needed to get a job like that done. Between the thermostat and compressor replacement, I saved big money over what a whole new system would have cost - and that, no doubt, would have been suggested by many other companies. It's nice to know that Ability Air only fixes what's broken and isn't out to gouge the public. My A/C has worked better than ever since John's visit and the heat during the recent cold snap was wonderful! I am so grateful to have found a quality company and a technician as knowledgeable, intelligent, competent and fairly priced as John. REVIEW FOR YELP OF ABILITY AIR John Dungan, owner and technician extraordinaire, has given excellent service for a reasonable price. My story started out one day when my AC sounded like it was screeching and screaming bloody murder. I turned off the AC and called an AC company from someone that I met at Home Depot. The technician came out, and said "You hear that? The bearings are shot. Doesn't pay to replace them, I suggest you go with a new system. A new system will run you about $4,500.00". I said no thank you and paid the inspection fee. I decided to get a second opinion. I called a contractor I know and asked if he knew of someone trustworthy to check out my AC unit. He suggested Ability Air. John reopened the air conditioner. I told him with the other technician said. He turned on the system. Listened to the noise. He then oiled it and the screeching noise stopped. Totally gone! I said, "Great, how much do I owe you?" He said, "Nothing, I didn't do anything here." I was amazed! About a week later I asked John for an estimate for a new system, as in truth the system I had was old and noisy inside, due to old age. John gave me an estimate of $500.00 less than the other tech, while quoting a superior quality unit. A couple of weeks later I called John to get the unit installed. He and an assistant installed it only two days later. The quality of the work was perfect. Their demeanor was professional and caring and had excellent attention to detail. For several following weeks John came by my house many times to tune the AC to dehumidify the air more efficiently. He then decided on his own, and out of his own pocket, to buy a part that would lower the humidity a little bit more - as far as the unit could go without an addition of another unit specifically to dehumidify the air. I purchased a house in St. Pete with a 9 year old hvac system. I immediately had issues with high energy bills which is highly unusual for a 980 square feet home. The air conditioner ran all the time, but the house remained semi-warm. I contacted Ability Air & Heat and they immediately scheduled a technician to come to my house. The technician arrived on time and did a fantastic job of immediately diagnosing the issue. He walked me through the process, and presented me with a variety of options based on my budget for replacing my hvac system. His customer service is the best as he did not oversell any services and did not nudge me towards buying a unit that would stretch my budget. On installation day, Ability Air & Heat sent out a crew of 3 guys, all of whom were very polite and friendly although they could have kept the work areas clean after they were done. The whole system was installed the same day. Unfortunately I was having an issue with the new system. I would set the temperature at 77 but mid-day the temperature inside the house would rise up to 80 degrees! I immediately contacted Ability Air and explained to them the issue. John, the owner showed up at 8pm to diagnose the issue. He tried to fix it that evening but I continued to have issues. John and his son were at my house everyday for 4 days straight, working diligently and patiently until they figured out and fixed what was causing the fluctuation in the temperature. John impressed me with his friendliness, professionalism and the obvious expert-level knowledge of his craft.  His company deserves more than five stars. Going above and beyond is an understatement. Getting your AC system replaced is not always the most exciting thing in the world to get done. And certainly not the cheapest thing to do. I would rate it as one of the more annoying and unexpected repairs that I've had to deal with. For one, it's hot and muggy and it only gets worse every minute you delay the inevitable repair. Then comes in Ability Air and Heat.. John is an extremely honest and service oriented individual. He went above and beyond what I expected. The first thing that stood out for me was I really felt I could trust John. It didn't seem like he was out to just make a buck. He gave me info that made sense to me and he seemed very knowledgeable. I could tell that he cared for my situation and wanted to get it all straightened out as quickly as possible. To say that I'm happy with my overall experience is an understatement. Not only would I go to him again but I made it a point to review him on Yelp even though I don't do this that often. My air conditioner stopped working and I needed to get a new one immediately. I had been shopping for air conditioners because I knew this day was coming, and they were way out of my price range. In this emergency, I posted on a local FB group for recommendations and EVERYONE recommended Ability Air. John came over and took a look, told me my options, and offered me an entirely new system for about half the price others were charging. I decided to go with the new system instead of the repair and I'm very happy with it. It's saving me money on energy bills every month and it really cools the air. I've been very comfortable all summer. John is very competent and professional in his ability to install and was always on time, easy to reach by phone, and cleaned up the area in which he was working completely. I couldn't ask for a better installation. I would buy another air conditioner from him, but I think it's going to be a long long time before that's needed. I live in a large new condo building down town, the AC started to go out periodically and I had a few friends stop by and changed filters, but they would have had to take apart the whole a/c to see if it was broken. That's when I heard about ability air through friends. He came out the next day and found my A/C's freon was low! So we filled it up. It had been years since we had. A few months later it started to act up and we knew it must be something else. I had him dig deep and low and behold there was a leak! John found it right away and fixed the unit. It has performed so wonderfully since. My electric bill alone dropped $100 a month and when my parents come in to town from up north and need it 67 at night, the a/c performs beautifully without anymore grumpy visitors. This AC company is better than any other I have ever used. I have lived in Florida most of my life and having a good AC company is like finding extra money on the road.....it's a good feeling!!! This company is professional and always delivers on time and above the rest. One time I had the old company I used come and out and tell me that I could do this and that MYSELF to the unit, mind you I know NOTHING about AC units, a good friend told me to call Ability and Jon came out and told me that he could fix the problem and get the AC up and running and I wouldn't have to do a thing. He also told me a few helpful hints about the vents and the filters, that I could handle. Taking off the panel and flicking switch wasn't something I couldn't handle. Highly recommend, John and Ability Air! Saved me $800 (and lots of potential floor repair and additional cost!) I was having difficulty with my A/C not keeping refrigerant and turned out it was a leak in the line. And the line was under the foundation of the house (ouch!) My previous A/C guys said they would probably need to jackhammer up the floor to get to and replace the line. I wanted a second opinion, saw the reviews, and thought I'd give Ability Air a try. I am so thankful I did. John took the time to explain everything to me (didn't leave anything out, was very honest, and no high pressure sales or anything I didn't need). They came in and even though there was some difficulty and they were out longer than they thought they would be, they stuck to their quoted price (and saved my floor!) John and his crew are amazing! We renovate properties and are very particular about the quality of workmanship in our houses and we wouldn't use anyone else for our heating and cooling needs. I first called John three years ago with A/C problems at a commercial place we were renting. The A/C had gone out on a really hot day and we were sweltering in our office. It was late Saturday afternoon and I was certain he'd tell me to wait until Monday. But not John. My air conditioning stopped working right in the middle of one of the hottest periods we've had in Florida, of course. I had all sorts of Valpac coupons for other AC companies, but my gut said to look for a company with great online reviews. I found John's website that night and he had a stellar set of ratings from a rather large fan club! Choosing an AC guy is like finding a doctor or dentist. I prefer a referral from someone who know a good one. I called John first thing in the morning and he came out that day. He diagnosed and fixed the unit within 30 minutes, and we were back in business. He's responsive, reasonably priced, trustworthy, courteous and professional. For quite some time, we've been having trouble with our A/C unit cooling correctly. It was always very warm. We decided to call John at Ability Air. The first thing that impressed me was the scheduling. He was sure to schedule an appointment that was convenient for us, not the other way around. He showed up (right on time!) and within 5 minutes already knew what the first problem was. It was interesting that we had other A/C companies take a look, and what we got was a much bigger and much more expensive response. John not only spotted it, but helped handle it! Yencid did a FANTASTIC job assessing my A/C situation. He was straight-forward with me, told me what my options were, their associated prices and gave me recommendations from there. He was never pushy and tried to upsell me something I didn't need. It was just a completely honest assessment. In the end, I chose to start small, see if that would help the problem, and if not, I'd escalate getting more costly service later. But already, I can feel my house getting cooler than what it already was by just taking care of the basic A/C maintenance needs--which my unit DEFINITELY needed, as we discovered and he explained to me. We recently purchased property in Clearwater Beach. We wanted to have the HVAC checked out and serviced as necessary. As we will be spending most of our time 1200 miles to the North (until retirement), we wanted a remote control thermostat installed to control humidity, and costs. First person I called and I was glad I did. After 2 days of reading manuals and calling honeywell's customer service center in India, and getting nowhere, John, the owner helped me trouble shoot and fix the issue in a couple of minutes on the phone. (thermostat batteries died and condensation drain tripped the shutoff and system would not restart after thermostat got new batteries). He could have just set up an appointment and billed me, but he didn't. He even explained how to clean the drain out. That is the sign of an honest technician and businessman who has a good heart. Our air conditioner stopped working, and I called Ability Air because of the good reviews on Yelp. He showed up when he said he would, he diagnosed the issue and explained everything thoroughly (even showing some pictures that he'd taken of the air handler up in our attic). We needed a new unit because ours was very old and hadn't been maintained (I wasn't too surprised), but he made it all so simple. I purchased a home and was told the AC unit was non-functioning and would have to be replaced. A friend referred Ability Air & Heat and I called for a quote. I'd planned to call 3 different companies and called this one first. After about 15 - 20 minutes of arriving, John came in to announce that he found out the problem and had it working although he'd have to do a little more work to make it right. John has been very successful at sorting out problems with our very problematic HVAC system. The electronics on our HVAC system are very complicated and John has the technical expertise to sort through all of its components to find the exact problem and fix it. On the latest visit, our heat pump didn't kick on when the cooler weather hit. The source of the malfunction turned out to be a broken wire. It was easy to fix but incredibly difficult to find. Everything went as smooth as silk. Scheduling the service call was a breeze, & when they came, they formed a diagnosis within the first 8 minutes.
