Last night we tried a "Dining in the Dark" experience. Not only was it a fascinating tactile and sensory experience, the food was also sensational!! After a crunchy piece of garlic toast just to get you oriented, and listen to the crunch, an excellent meal followed. First was a delightful tomato and herb bisque, then an appetizer of grilled scallop atop a lightly creamed corn. The entree was a grilled pork cutlet that everyone in the room thought was steak. It was so flavorful and tender, served with fingerling potatoes and string beans with a few pickled cauliflower. Just scrumptious! Dessert was a small scoop of ice cream served atop a fruity crepe. During the dinner we were also served a variety of delightful wines. The owner and staff were all excellent and caring, ensuring everyone had a wonderful time!! read more

Like everyone else has mentioned, Chef Abby is amazing. Very friendly and approachable. Not at all what you expect from a head chef (if TV shows and books are to be believed). I took the Knife Skills class, and was initially worried that it would be too introductory. But Chef Abby takes a short survey at the beginning to find out what everybody's needs are and then does as much customization as she can on the fly. The lesson started out with a glass of wine and bread, while she explained the different types of knives, and let us get a feel for each one. There was also a take-home packet for reference. Once we got slicing and dicing, there was a big cutting table that was comfortable enough for 6 people (though any more would be crowded). We went through basic techniques, and she gave us individual pointers based on what we were doing. It's so much better than trying to learn from watching TV or YouTube, because she'll tell you exactly how to perfect your form. Chef Abby also goes out of her way to answer any questions, related to the class or just the restaurant industry as a whole. She has some great stories too. The course description said we would be making gazpacho and fruit salad. We actually ran over time, so we spent most of the time working on our vegetable cuts. The fruit part was more of a demo, with her just explaining how to cut and how to pick fruit. Then we sat down and ate the (literal) fruits of our labor. The classes take place in the restaurant. They don't close down the restaurant, so people can still come in for dinner (they might for larger classes though). I loved the meal I previously had at Camaje, so I can't blame them even though it might be a bit awkward. But that also means that students can order food and it'll be at your table when the class is done (the gazpacho and fruit salad wasn't quite heavy enough for dinner, so this was a tempting prospect). All in all, this was my second cooking class ever, and I enjoyed it a lot. Chef Abby mentioned that the rest of the courses are more hands-on and you get to go into the kitchen, so I look forward to the day when I'll have a need for those classes! read more

Perhaps I've been too five-star happy of late, but I can't help it if restaurants are trying really hard to please me. Camaje is a gem: a small, quaint French bistro in one of the trendiest neighborhoods that somehow remains off the radar. And I'm not complaining. Once again, a Scoutmob coupon brought me to the doorstep. When you enter, you step into a little world that's part Brooklyn coffee shop (see cushy sofa with a front-row seat for MacDougal people-watching) and part Parisian cafe, with all of the expertise and none of the pretension. My friend and I shared a simple meal: the cheese and charcuterie plates, which come with croutons. The cold cuts, preceded by excellent French bread and butter, were very nice, but what really sets this place apart is the service (I wish I could remember the waiter/host's name, but all I recall is that he was working the entire room on Friday evening). It was an exhibition in attentive, informative, and superlative service with none of the unnecessary pageantry. He knew just when to insert himself with suggestions and when to seamlessly recede into the background. I will surely be back for the more creative menu items, but I want to make sure that this gentleman's word gets recognized! Friendly and informative, Chef Abby gets it done in the laid back confines of Bistro Camaje, which provides a serene setting for cooking for small groups. I was observing a class of 8 and participated in supporting the class with the essentials in tools they needed. While Bistro Camaje is primarily French/American, Chef Abby has a other styles to teach such as Japanese, Knife Skills, and English: the point is to ask in advance. The hands on approach really sets it aside from places like Eataly, which has super facilities, but the students are just numbers that observe the process. I saw a birthday party there for 25 which closed the venue as the group separated into teams that made a portion of the dinner. While sipping wine and beer, the teams each took turns in making their contribution. It was a very cool idea. read more

Omigosh. So. Good. My fiancé and I got a gift certificate here & came to redeem it this evening. At first, I didn't think much of the place. It's a little small and not at all pretentious, but it does have a simple charm to it. Our waitress was the absolute best! She was so sweet and very attentive. I really thought she was outstanding. The food was incredibleee. I don't know how people found anything to complain about. For apps, we had the garlic sautéed shrimp and the hot crab dip. Honestly, the dip was the only thing I wasn't crazy about, but it wasn't something I particularly wanted to begin with (thanks fiancé). The shrimp were divine. My only complaint is that there weren't more on the plate (that's my inner fatty talking). For entrees, we shared the Kobe burger and a seared scallop special of the day. I can't even explain how incredible the scallops were. Crispy edges with a buttery soft interior and SO tasty. The veggies underneath were equally amazing! Just thinking about it all over again makes my mouth water. The burger, while a little on the small side, was delicious. We added fries (REAL fries BTW.) and onion rings and both were above average. Again ... tasty and crispy. Whoever's cooking back there knows what they're doing! Everything was cooked to perfection. We went a little overboard and got dessert too. Why not, right? Everyone was talking up the Banoffee Pie so much that I just HAD to indulge. So glad I did. Worth every single calorie! Overall, we had a beautiful experience. Lori N. and I went to Camaje with 50% off from Scoutmob. We arrived right at noon, and the woman working here seemed a bit surprised and mentioned the chef had just stepped out to get bread. We decided to come back in 10 minutes. Honestly, everything on this menu looks awesome. Even the tea selection was stellar. (We recommend the Jasmine and the Once Upon a Tea, which includes chocolate, mint, and rooibos.) Even without this discount, we agreed, the $15 prix-fix for lunch is a steal. Lori got the sunchoke soup; spinach, mushroom, and onion crepe; and the apple tart. I got the pesto and goat cheese crostini; chicken, bacon, and avocado panini, and chocolate crepe. Everything was stellar. Highlights included the spinach, mushroom, and onion crepe, and the apple tart, which was more of a crumble. The portions are not too large, and tastes are traditional and scrumptious. Our waitress was a little forgetful - like only bringing one knife or forgetting sugar - but she was attentive. She was ready to take our plates away right away - maybe too quickly. Also, the music was a little weird, mostly "oldies" on the radio - including the radio commercials. This review is for Dining in the Dark: overall, I thought this was a really cool experience and would recommend it to others. The blindfolds really do make you blind- I couldn't see anything, and it was really neat to have to guess what you're eating. It was also fun to have a completely distraction free conversation with your dinner companion. The meal comes with wine including refills, so the value ends up being pretty decent. I wouldn't say the food is the best I've ever had, but you go to Dining in the Dark for the experience, not the cuisine itself. Another thing- our reservation was for a cold night in February, and when we got there 5 minutes early there was a sign on the door saying we have to wait outside until a staff member comes out for orientation. We then did another 5 minutes of orientation in the freezing cold outside. This is borderline unacceptable- if I had to wait 5 more minutes longer I probably would have left, because it was that cold. They should probably figure out a way to get people inside to wait during the winter months. read more

From the moment we walked in the door until the time we left, we were welcomed and felt like we were cooking and visiting with friends. We were a party of 6 celebrating two 30th Birthdays and could not have found a more perfect place to enjoy each others company. The hidden gem of Greenwich village! Had a great time at Camage for birthday dinner. Very personal touch and cozy and no rush for food! Felt like eating home-cooking food at home. Had a 4 top table reservation and changed to 2 people at the last min but Abby the owner of the restaurant had no issue with handling the issue and greeted us with warm smiles and stayed with us till the end of the meal. Felt I was very welcome there. Cheese plater. Good numbers of choice! Steak tartar was very yummy to start and fresh cut! Littleneck clam was very fresh and right seasoning! French onion soup made me sweat! Yummy! The duck breast and steak were juicy and tender with the full flavor of meat! I was thinking "What have you done with meat! So tender!!" Free wifi and some comfy couches that face the opened up entrance? I'm there. There's some magazines, books and a random game by the couches. I got the Jasmine pot (you're supposed to have a pot per person, but the guy asked if we'd like to share and we did). It was good tea, and he brought over some honey (though it was one super sticky bear to squeeze). My other friend got the champagne, which was yummy! Good ambiance, chill space, and the guy was laid back (he was chillin' on the couch before we arrived) and friendly. We played some fun games and caused a ruckus, but he was fine with it. My friend and I wandered into Camaje Bistro early one evening, thinking that it appeared cute and adorable. Despite it being almost completely empty when we arrived, the dining room filled up as the night went on. Our lame server had no presence on the floor. He announced that they had no nightly specials, so we asked him for his preferences on the menu. He responded by referencing the "clear winners" on the list, leaving the others to seem merely inadequate. We tried to order a bottle of the Sauvignon Blanc, but they were sold out, so we tried glasses of the Sancerre and Riesling, both of which were flavorful but too light-bodied. We began our meal with Mixed Olives that had been tastefully covered in olive oil and spices like rosemary. The Pesto-Goat Cheese Crostini was very fresh, aromatic, and herbaceous. The Wild Striped Bass was a bit tough in the center and was served with a bland and mushy saffron-infused pearl pasta. The tomato-olive broth and included kale were spectacular, though. The Spring Lamb Stew included tender, juicy meat and a ton of vegetables, all cooked in a parsley shallot mustard sauce. Our Banoffee Pie dessert was the highlight of the experience. This sweet treat consisted of a graham cracker crust, caramelized bananas, toffee, chocolate shavings, and a phenomenally fluffy espresso whipped cream. My friend never eats cake, but even she loved this decadence. While our meal had its highs and lows, and could technically deserve more like 2.5 stars, I would say that it would only be worth re-visitng for one of their cooking classes or evenings of dining in the dark. read more

It was good except it must have had a quarter jar of chocolate on it. Drinks I had the "once upon a tea" which is a chocolate tea served in a 3 serving tea pot. My husband, sister and best friend and I went and did a French macaron class with chef roger. He and Abigail were extremely relaxed and awesome. He explained ton about the process and we had some laughs throughout. They were extremely accommodating as the listed flavors for the class on course horse weren't my favorite and let us change two of them ! Dining in the dark is a super fun experience, particularly to do with a group, at this little French bistro. It is an 8 o'clock seating on occasional days per month, so you need to watch their calendar for announcements. Outside you will put your blindfold on and follow the person in front of you in a single file line into the restaurant without seeing where you are going. Once you were situated in your seat, you will feel around your table to try to identify the location of your water glass, plate, utensils, wine glass, etcetera. You will receive four glasses of wine, and not know what they are. Food will be placed in front of you, and you will not know what you are eating. But that is the fun of it all! We had to walk out halfway through. It makes me so sad to trash a restaurant my family has been to many times, but past experience is the only thing keeping me from giving one star. I came here with my dad, fiancée, and best friend before catching a play. My dad and best friend hadn't met so this was to be a special dinner. After 1h30 our main course still hadn't arrived, despite repeatedly telling our waitress that we had to catch a play. What we planned as a special dinner ended with us walking out of Camaje and eating cold pizza quickly in the street. Worse, instead of being honest that our food wasn't going to arrive on time or trying to make amends, our waitress assured us our food was coming and make no extra effort when it was clear that we had no time left to eat. There were minor misfires throughout, I had to ask for both bread and plates (plates!) when our cheese came, I thought I ordered the wrong wine but looking back it was surely her mistake, and she kept touching my shoulder (this ended when my fiancée arrived but my dad's presence didn't deter her). It feels very amazing by how our feeling will change after we lost our sight, we begin to listen more often, pay attending to every detail. The service was superb. Our server was Brian and he was attentive and provided anything and everything we asked for. I immediately noticed a slight southern accent he had and being from the south myself, I found it endearing. When we arrived a little early for our 8pm reservation, Brian was able to seat us immediately. He told us to pick a spot anywhere and make ourselves at home. It was such a beautiful and warm Manhattan night so we chose to dine al fresco. They have these beautiful French tables and chairs outside and we grabbed one. The table felt a little shaky since we were the second row out (on a slightly slanted sidewalk) and decided we would rather choose a sturdier table inside. With the large size of the plates we later found out, this was a wise choice. We chose a 4 top closest to the kitchen which in no way negatively impacted our dining experience. The kitchen is down a long hallway so heat wasn't an issue. The decor is adorable and eclectic. Mismatched empty bottles and photos. Red walls with a red chandelier create a romantic and soothing atmosphere. Soft, love inspired music played for the entirety of our meal. Mirrors lined the walls and the French doors in the front were all opened to create an airy, soft ambiance. Brian was quick to tell us about the specials and offer our drinks. Those were the only part of our meal that came quickly. We ordered our appetizers and entrees. About 30 minutes later we received our cold sliced up baguette. The best part of the bread was the triangle shaped spread served on the side. The bread was tough and chewy, not hard. It seemed to be 2 days old. I disliked the metal bucket the bread was brought in as it is something I would see in a roadhouse, not a French Restaurant. We then waited for what felt like an eternity for our appetizers. Duck fat popcorn with thyme and parmesean. I think they forgot the parm. And Hummus with cumin and red pepper flakes in olive oil. The bread could have been taken out of the oven a little sooner than it was but the hummus was to die for. We waited a long time for our entrees. Filet Mignon over sliced potatoes with asparagus and Flank Steak over roasted garlic mashed with green beans. Both were served with a red wine cherry sauce. The flavor of the sauce would have been amazing had it not been for the cup of salt that must have been accidentally added. I went through 2 carafes of water it was so salty. I am a person who adds salt to 99% of what I eat and this was the saltiest food I have ever had in my life. We ordered our steaks medium and they were a little more rare than we had hoped but it was tender and we did enjoy it. The green beans and asparagus were not salty so they were a welcome addition to every bite. For dessert we ordered a Dark Choclate Souffle to share and it was heaven. It was light with every bite and was cooked to perfection. We should have ordered 2 but I had declined and later regretted it. Server, service, atmosphere and dessert were the best parts of this meal. I love a good steak and wish that each salty bite wasn't what I was thinking about as I ate. read more

The bread was excellent which is always an indication of the restaurant's standing. The Cote De Rhone came in a heavy bottle indicating it was of some quality and the service could not be beat. Hands down one of the best dining experiences I have ever had in my life last Tuesday night. I am on the Atkins diet so the cheese and charcuterie plate was really ideal for me. I throughly enjoyed the ambiance and loved the server, he was so friendly and attentive. The curated cheese and charcuterie menu was very tempting and well described. The blindfolds were alarmingly effective at keeping all things light out! The staff is masterful at getting food, drinks and restroom breaks curated. I don't want to give too much away, since it's a unique experience; there IS some sensory stuff involved that invades your personal space, but it wasn't unpleasant. Food was served at a temperature that made it safe to touch (yes, you can touch your food to find it haha) and the wine pairings, in my opinion, were nothing short of brilliant. Few minor misses here. Starting with the logistics outside. Dinner was to start at 8, but really 8:20 was more realistic. Also, some of the guests were incredibly loud making conversation during the event extremely tedious (we're talking, I had to shout to be heard and struggle to hear my guests). The noise is what keeps this from being a five star review. Lastly, you don't get to keep your mask, which; hygienically had me a little nervous after the fact (you can buy them though). Your results may vary! You should be coming here for the experience of it all, Camaje has this down to a science and it's worth your money. I'm writing this review while I'm still sitting at the table. Don't be deceived by the term "lounge". What they really mean is...come join us on our one couch that looks like it came from Salvation Army (or worse). When they open the doors (like they are now) it becomes a good "how the other half lives" experience. My 27 dollar entree consisted of 4 pieces of steak and came 10 minutes after the dishes for the rest of the table. The "Kobe beef" burger is laughable. The beef is as much kobee, as the couch is new. I never write reviews but felt compelled after this experience. DONT COME HERE. Trying to pay the check but there's only 1 waiter and we haven't seen him in 30 min. My wife is not a fan of coupons. She thinks they're a closed loop for suckers and the surest path to disappointment. Groupons, LivingSocials, and all their ilk? Don't get her started. And Blackboard Eats? Don't even mention. I for one love BBE, I think it's a great way to try new restaurants and any potential disappointment comes with a built in 30% off cushion. So, for some reason, I chose to check Camaje's Yelp reviews only AFTER I made the reservations. Bad move. I went out of my way to convince her that dinner was gonna be awesome and it was close to the movie and it'd be awesome. Yelp clearly said it would not be awesome. But, you know what, it was pretty close to great. We started with some cheese & charcuterie, which wa smart, bec. the wife loves little plates of things. Different tastes and nibbles make her happy. Next moved on to the mains. I had the kobe beef burger and fries. My burger was a complete disaster (no cheese, cooked to death instead of Medium), but the waiter immediately replaced and even refreshed my wine. The replacement was pretty tasty & cooked to perfection. And the onion rings were superb. Wife's garlic shrimp was a little dry, but flavorful. Asparagus & Radish salad had a lot of dressing - also great for me, not so much for her. We had none of the service issues other folks had. In fact, our waiters were great. Really friendly and on top of it. Check, quick thank you banter and that was it. Was it horrible? No. Was it amazing? Nope. This is a Dark Dining review from Sat Jun 9th. My boyfriend surprised me by taking me out to Dark Dining - he told me as soon as we arrived at Camaje, and I was immediately excited to try it out. I had heard about Dark Dining but never realized there were places in NYC that do it. The check-in process was very professional and they made sure to take note of all food preferences, allergies, etc., which gave me the distinct feeling that we would be well taken care of. Unfortunately, this place flopped the minute we entered the door. The blindfolds were pretty uncomfortable, and they packed the place so tightly that I was nervous to move around too much, given that I couldn't see a thing. There was an unbelievably rowdy & intoxicated table next to us that was incredibly loud and distruptive - obviously not Camaje's fault, but I felt they could have done a better job with getting them to calm down so that everyone else in the restaurant didn't have to shout at their respective dates. It's REALLY hard to talk to someone in a loud restaurant when you can't even see their lips moving. The food was not good. It wasn't awful, but given that I was blindfolded and my senses were thus "heightened" I would have expected a much better meal. It was fun eating with my hands (far too difficult to use a fork!), but the food wasn't anything to rave about. I should also note that there was some WEIRD music played during the intermissions. Came with a Groupon to have steak frites, duck breast for entrees and creme brulee for desert. Belgian hot chocolate was pretty good too. The service was warm and welcoming. Food was also good. read more

The weirdest thing happened at CamaJe. We had two different waiters, one VERY snippy and pretentious and one sort of floppy and unassuming, and between them still had very bad service. Tag-team service only works when the people aren't assuming "the other guy will take care of it". They also had different opinions on the food-- so when we ordered what one guy had suggested, the other waiter tried to steer us away from that dish. Huh? The atmosphere was loud (in a "we are art students laughing loudly at a Voltaire joke" sort of way) and you get the feeling that if they turned up the lights, the place would look like crap.
