I stopped in with my dog on 3/25/2026 for a quick 2 mile buggy ride. The gentleman who took us out was very friendly, informative and patient considering my dog was not a huge fan of the ride. We were very impressed with how they kept the rides cycling through and got to us with a much shorter wait than we had expected. Earvin was an amazing buggy driver - providing so much insight as we took our 2 mile ride, and answering all of the questions that we had! I would recommend a buggy ride from Abe's. It is Amish owned, unlike others in the area. Our driver was an Amish woman. We were a group of 7, 4 adults, 3 kids and an infant. Our driver answered all of our questions about Amish life. As we went by the farms and saw other Amish in the community, the driver knew them by name and had a deep knowledge of this community and the farms. We learned a lot. The buggy ride was comfortable. We expected a lot of jostling but it wasn't like that at all. Very smooth ride. My infant slept the whole time. It was that smooth. Lancaster is a wholesome place, and we really couldn't have been luckier to have Paul as our driver & his horse Big Ben. We took a 60-min buggy ride through the countryside. Paul was an excellent guide and a library of information about local history, farms & businesses. The entire landscape is scenic, quiet & peaceful. During our ride, we saw Amish doing their daily work, passed Amish riding on their buggies & scooters, saw traditional schoolhouses, drove over bridges & streams, and saw plenty of farm animals. Paul even invited my nephew to drive the buggy! We also stopped at a bake shop for homemade ice cream made from local dairy cows. Note: It's been 25 years since my last visit to Lancaster & it was all the more special to come with family. We arrived on Monday when there was hardly any tourists. Buggy rides are way too expensive! Amish guy did not give very much information or point out things. Cars drive around to buggies like they lost their minds of course it's Pennsylvania , so! Seeing the Amish country was great though. 4 to 6.5 miles it was $195 for three people. I guess if you wanna pay it you can so Amish guy was talking to his horse and he told him four times he had a heavy load. Yep we had some extra weight on. and a horse was pulling, but he darn sure. Everyone needs to experience the Amish life! I have wanted to do this for a long time. We were the first to arrive and bought our tickets. Elizabeth a very nice Amish lady took us for our tour. She was such a good tour guide and told us so much about the Amish life and the area. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The ride lasted around 45 minutes. The countryside is beautiful. The farm had a few animals you could feed and take pictures of. The goats were adorable. There was also a big playground and picnic area. Plenty of parking. They are closed on Sundays. read more

As you drive down the country roads in rural Pennsylvania, you might notice several Amish buggies going by. People are very careful as they drive past them because horses can be unpredictable at times. With that being said, so many of us have wanted to take a ride on one of the buggies. That's where Abe's Buggy Rides comes into the picture. Abe's is located in the countryside of Bird In Hand, Pennsylvania! When you drive by, you'll see a sign to let you know that you've found the right place! Continue toward the back of the property and park your vehicle. There are two driveways, so make sure that you turn into the right one. If you turn into the wrong driveway, you'll end up at someone else's home. When you exit your vehicle, you'll be greeted by some super sweet Amish ladies. You can ride anywhere from 2 to 6.5 miles or you can choose a one hour journey. We paid with cash so I'm not sure if they have a machine to take debit or credit cards. Many Amish businesses that deal with the public take bank cards so I'm assuming that Abe's might too. We paid for a 2 mile ride with Paul as our guide. The first thing that you'll notice is that these buggies are different from the traditional ones that Amish ride in. Amish buggies are completely enclosed and you cannot see inside from any angle. These ones have clear sliding windows for tourists to see their surroundings. That's how you can tell the difference between Amish owned buggies and the buggies that are meant for tours. We had a wonderful time as we passed by various homes in the community. We learned that Amish people have become slightly modernized as they utilize solar energy. Also, they do hire drivers to take them to the store and so on. We did notice that many people were farming by hand or using manual farm equipment. They're very hardworking people. We passed by an Amish school and it was a single room classroom. It was interesting to see young kids playing with older teens. Also, we quickly learned how to identify Amish homes vs homes occupied by non Amish people. We basically learned a lot more about Amish people than we thought that we knew before. We've got a lot to learn from people who haven't been jaded by modern advancements in this world. Who are these people?! They are the Amish/Mennonite Community. The one major image of the Amish/Mennonite Community is: Their Buggy!! With major positive reviews, there was one that my wife and I had to visit with no questions asked: Abe's Buggy Rides in Bird in Hand, PA. Yes, you heard me! My wife and I are in Pennsylvania for our Spring Break Vacation. When we arrived back home, one of my goals was to start my first review with Abe's Buggy Rides. We had done so much on the East Coast that this ranked #1 on my list. Located on the sound side of Pennsylvania Route 340 (Old Philadelphia Pike), you can't miss that sign that says, Abe's Buggy Rides. If you are coming from the east on Route 340, you may have to make a U-Turn as it is a one lane each way road. Parking is on the rear of the house. Parking will be quite tight as there are about 8-10 spots. As the season gets warmer, Abe's Buggy Rides will get quite famous and busy throughout the day. With the help of Yelp, Abes Buggy Rides was highly recommended. When we parked, we saw an open buggy parked behind the house. Little did I know there were more on the property. I walked to a little shack that had souvenirs and a pricing board for the Buggy Rides. There are different routes/pricing for the time available. These range from 2 Miles to 6.5 ($15 to $65 per adult/$7 to $20 per kids/Kids Under 3 are Free). We took the simple amount of 2 miles ($15 per adult). No Tax on top of the purchase. We were brought the rear of the property and met our Buggy Handler, Paul. Our horse of the day: Ricky. First off, Paul, is a Mennonite and while he is of a similar religion. He felt like the lost relative that we have no relationship with. He took us on a trip around the neighborhood while still being caught with the traffic of something called...Automobiles. The Buggy was made of metal with an enclosure. It also had power windows. I mean, you slide the window with your hand. Paul was super personal with us and very open to all our questions. My wife and Paul could make a gossip group. The short trip alone was worth the experience just with Paul. He took us around the neighborhood to see an Amish School, neighborhood, and farm. There were conversations that I won't mention, but my wife may or may not on her review. While they were having intense conversations, Ricky was leaving a lot of his business on the road; if you know what I mean. While I may have paid for a short 20 minute trip, it didn't feel like 20 minutes, it felt MUCH LONGER! Paul felt very comfortable with us to do stuff for us during our buggy ride. As our buggy ride came to an end, Paul reminded us to use the complimentary restroom and to take a tour of the property as there is an animal farm. You can buy some animal snack for $0.25 cents each. They have some goats, roosters, and miniature horses you can take photos and pet. If you have kids/children, Abe's Buggy Rides has a playground if all the Buggies have been out and you may have to wait. As we were leaving, I gave Paul a kind tip: $2 Bills. He was very happy to see them as it is rare to see them. Especially...when they are NEW $2 crisp Bills. My wife and I, if....actually, WHEN, we come back, we have to see Paul again. One of the nicest and honest guys at Abe's Buggy Rides. We saw some other tours who didn't have a constant interaction and just let the driver/handler, just show them around when they needed more of a friend. If you are in Amish Country or more specifically, Bird in Hand, Pennsylvania, go to the best of Amish Buggy Rides: Abe's Buggy Rides and ask for Paul! Of course when visiting Lancaster county, a buggy ride is a must, so, ultimately, I turned to Yelp to find one that would fit our needs (a squirmy toddler) and that had great reviews. Abe's deserves all of the accolades and, I would have given 5-stars if we had been able to hear our driver. He talked a lot and had a lot of information; however, we heard about 5% of it. We chose the 30 minute ride, and I'm thankful we did because that was about all my son could take of being in a confined space. Kids 3 and under are free. All of the rides are private and it seems like they were following this procedure pre-Covid as well. No reservations as it is first come, first served, but we had no wait on a Monday around 11am. They are closed on Sunday, as are most Amish businesses. After the ride, we spent some time with the farm animals and playing on the swings. I'd definitely recommend Abe's Buggy Rides if you are looking for an authentic experience in Amish Country. read more
